  • @Draketopher
    @Draketopher Před měsícem +47

    Long time Needle drop viewer, and long time $B listener. The feeling I get from every review for them he does, Anthony just wants them to experiment and do more with their sound, and I agree. I feel like they have gotten very "safe" after IWTDINO, maybe even the KYS sagas. My only 2 projects I've really liked since then are Stop Staring at Shadows and New Orleans. I thought they were going to expand after that, but this album and Sing Me a Lullaby sound almost identical. In reality, I'll probably only have 2 or 3 tracks from each in rotation for a few years, when I can listen to DN$2 or the sagas front to back, over and over again.
    I love $B, have a special place for them as I coincidently got sober around the time they did, and a very proud feeling seeing them go from doing tours in bars and now selling out arenas. Older than most of their audience now, but still going to try to go to every Grey Day, and support them as some of my favorite artist. Thank u for not pooing on them, Anthony. I hope one day they can get a 8 out of you.

    • @p4perweight
      @p4perweight Před měsícem +7

      IWTDINO felt like a cohesive project with variety and I've grown to love every song on it, it's their current peak for me. Everything before that had no rules and fucking rocked (generally), and everything afterwards has been feeling less and less bold I guess. Definitely agree on the albums feeling safe, it's still good but it leaves me itching for something more, I just haven't been able to figure out what. Their solo projects kinda scratched that itch though, especially Ruby's.

    • @Draketopher
      @Draketopher Před měsícem +2

      @@p4perweight Hard agree on IWTDINO feeling most cohesive and probably being peak $B, there are qualities in both of their performances on that album I really miss. I would have disagreed a year or two ago, I felt like it sounded really sterile when it came out, but it's consistently been on my top plays every year. I also think there was some part of me that wanted them to stay 'underground' and that album was the one that crossed that barrier. If I recommend 1 song to new listeners, it's usually Razor IV because it feels like it's a perfect showcase for what I love about them, minus maybe the more extreme Radical/Eternal Grey stuff.
      And I feel you with the itch whenever a new album comes out, I've been going on deep relisting dives on the new album cycles, and I appreciate them more. I can always go back and listen to all the old stuff I love because there's so much of it. I'm fine with waiting for them to bring in different sounds since I have all of that. The side projects did help, I was thinking I was going to like Duck Boy more since I listen to more of that genre, but lonely boy has gotten more time from me and a little fresher to me. Can't wait for the next release, already.

    I’ve been a big time listener for a long time, and though I love this album; I agree with you. The lyricism is far more shallow than it used to be, one thing that I really loved about their older music was the world building within the lyrics. I don’t know if they’ve stopped because they think the world has been built, or if they want to go for a wider audience. But Ruby used to build a world brick by brick, song by song, and scrim would play into it heavily.
    That’s not to say their trademark lyricism has gotten worse, bars like “let my .44 give a speech,” and “you’d think I’m gambit” still show that they like layering and adding some depth to their lyrics, but just not entirely in the way that they used to.
    I loved those days, but I love these days too. I think I’ve just built such a love and reverence for these guys over the years that I’ll be happy almost any way they go. But I still have to acknowledge the differences from today and yesterday.
    I never watched your reviews much, but I gotta say I appreciate your ability to acknowledge their strengths even though the music isn’t for you, or you disagree with their method.

    • @Josh216
      @Josh216 Před měsícem +1

      I think I agree with what you've said here. They have evolved a lot with the flows and the beats are cleaner, although I do miss the grungy feeling. I will say "Sing Me a Lullaby" had a lot of deepcut and emotional songs...and this was missing on NWD. Other than on 2 and a half-ish tracks any time they said something deep it would kind of jarringly go straight back to the surface. I still love this new album, personally it's a 9/10... I'm just hoping for a deluxe or something.
      A final note, I do think a lot of the time across the boy$ career they chose to make the beats carry some sad undertones even if they are "hard" tracks, and I think some people struggle to feel that given the new cleaner production. For example, Burgundy is a certified banger but the beat isn't JUST hard... the beat and delivery give off a feeling of sorrow and self-destructiveness, which is hidden under this aggressive bravado. I feel that was something we saw on Eternal Grey, being edgy and tough but every track carrying this depressed feeling. Like saying sad mental health related things can be hard and uncomfortable, so they choose to convey it in undertones or at least mixed with other emotions.
      Maybe its just me though.

    As a $B fan I have to say, I don’t agree with his rating, yet I understand his points and I see them. I’m not going to hate on him bc of it either.
    I do feel that some lyrics are very deep cutting and meaningful, and I don’t try and gatekeep here, but I do feel that u have to been to that place in ur mind to understand them fully, and see how true they really are.
    I also heard many times that all $B songs sound the same and I don’t get that point at all, on the other side, I think every Taylor swift song sounds the same, so I guess, if u don’t grow up w the music, listen it daily, or really embody it, it tends to sound generic to u.
    I do hold the biggest of respect for my boys scrim and Ruby. Love em to death and the fact that they are independent and made it do far already is just insane and makes me proud. To me this album is a 9

      I gotta disagree, personally the album to me is so similar in regards to SMAL. Only difference is scrim has put in some much unneeded piano chords into beats that really didn't need them, it was their way of "changing". Scrim sounds the same on basically every song with his vocal range lacking compared to previous projects, only using the same autotuned mellow voice throughout the album. Ruby carried this to death throughout all this, IMO this might be one of the boys' worst projects to date

    I kinda disagree with the opinion of them not changing their sound. They've changed the tone of a lot of their music over the past few years. Sing Me A Lullaby I thought sounded a lot like something they hadn't done before. Even Scrim who I usually can't stand on the track has found some new flows and melodies that I like. They haven't completely revamped their sound but I feel like it's improved a lot over the years. I agree that they rarely try to actually get in that bag. I also think the album was just ok though. I don't think you've dived into the lore behind them enough, ive been listening to them for quite some time now, and I got just from the lyrics multiple things :
    -Grey / Greatness in Transgressions is a reference to G59, or Grey 59, which is their label(?) or whatever its called.
    - another line in Transgressions is : "got the nine in my bag now its time to board the G5." In the same way its a play on words with G59
    The Thin Grey Line: in transgressions, ruby mentions that the fine line has been crossed at least 3 times. Also, ruby mentions that "one more minute till the hours done I'll take my time." 59 minutes.
    I literally have ingested voluntarily to 1 video of the boys talking: Theo Von Podcast. Everything else I know about them is from their lyrics/reading their wikipedia page once. for like 3 minutes. Overall, seems like the effort put into this video wasn't up there. standard opinion too.

      Seems I just disagree. The sample of a song may stay the same, but almost every song has progressive strings, pianos, drums or other elements. Look at track 8 for example (Are You Going to See the Rose). Pianos all over the track and building strings at the end, pretty detailed in my opinion. I am also a JPEGMAFIA fan as well and no they’re not that bombastic or sporadic, but I would argue that they are as well made and detailed.
