  • Singapore’s Changi Airport has been ranked the world’s best for seven years in a row now. But it isn't resting on its laurels, with the opening of a new nearly $1.3 billion “crown jewel” to stay ahead of the competition. CNBC’s Uptin Saiidi takes us inside.

@Teringventje Then tell us, on what? We have universal healthcare coverage, being ranked 4th healthiest country worldwide by the Bloomberg Global Health Index. Our education system is ranked 1st worldwide by OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and the 3 least corrupt nation out of 175 countries, according to the 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index reported by Transparency International.. Our military defence spending is already at about 3% of GDP, the highest in our region, and there's no reason to increase it. And also we have lifelong schemes in place for every Singaporean that helps plan for and assists in paying for anything from healthcare costs, public housing, and retirement. So what are we supposed to spend on?
Projects like the Jewel isn't just "looks", which you'd known if you actually watched more than 5 seconds of the video. It's to attract foreign investment and tourism, something that's been important to Singapore since we gained independence from the British decades ago. We have no natural resources; trade, travel through our borders and foreign spending is what drives our economy, and what turned us from a third world country to first in less than 50 years.

Thank you to everyone there who also get what fliers want to have in an airport. I feel like they understand how exhausting and stressful it is to land in an airport that is unfit for any human consumption, confusing, not accommodating, dull, and miserable. I am never unhappy when I get long layovers here. They only thing I wish they do is to increase the number of transit hotels and lounges, it starting to get crowded and hard to get a room reserved in time. Yes, I know it's best to reserve the rooms online but it helps to have that. However, I am thankful when I get an available lounge chair to doze off on, all I need is my neck pillow and blanket and I am good to go. :)

I am proud that I can give a few ideas on Jewel and Terminal 5. There are many other great airports around the world, notably in Seoul and Beijing Daxing. However Changi keeps on-upping the rest and will continue to do so.

seen a guy going around throwing shade and hate to singapore so let me just say a few things :
    1) as a singaporean myself, i can safely assure you that locals go to the airport ALL THE TIME. we go there to chill, eat, watch the planes etc. , and school students even go there to practise dancing. and when the jewel opened, well ... MANY locals were really trying to get the tickets to see the jewel.
    2) we ARE friendly! most of us just have an in-built rbf. ask us for directions and most of us would help you.
    3) it's extremely safe here. you really could go out at 12am and still be safe. criminals are often caught and very few manage to run away from our extremely long arms of the law.
    4) education here may be stressful, but we learn things way ahead of many countries imo (if i'm incorrect pls correct me!)
    5) we are united regardless of race, language or religion. attack one of us and we will pounce on you. our national anthem is sung in malay for goodness sake.
    6) our medical and schooling needs are well taken care of, and our government ensures that our retirement funds is also taken care of. (singapore residents have subsidised / free schooling till end of secondary school; we have MediSave, CHAS, MediFund etc. for medical needs; we have the CPF fund and Merdeka Generation package.)
    7) we have both strong preventive and protective measures against transnational terrorism. even our own patrol officers seem scary to us 😳
    8) HAWKER CENTRES !!!!
so yeah! there are so many things to be proud of singapore for. Changi airport is one of them, but it is not limited to this beautiful airport.

@Mash Abdul well first things first, when comparing countries one should use gdp per capita not gdp itself. Otherwise a country like Liechtenstein will never have more gdp than a country like China even though they have one of the highest gdp per capita in the world.
Secondly, I highly doubt that Singapore will be a servant to Indonesia. Do you know how many Indonesians come to Singapore to earn a living? Why do you think they would bother coming if Singapore was a servant country to Indonesia?
Lastly, any Indonesian elite will be able to call the shots against any Singaporean. I don't know what you're smoking but I'll like some of it.

    • @matthewliew1274
      @matthewliew1274 Před 5 lety

@Mash Abdulndonesia has always been South East Asia's biggest economy currently just over $1 trillion and Singapore's is only $350 billion, about three times smaller than Indonesia's. Indonesia has its strengths and weaknesses and ditto Singapore. We don't have to be "servants" as you put it. We do not have a Big hinterland to depend on like Hong Kong has China. We have a VERY small 5.6 million population and ZERO natural resources. We only have brain power and will have to create our own "luck" to stay relevant to the whole world. This we've done a pretty decent job so far.
Despite our high operational costs and wages compared to our neighbors, this hasn't stopped the more than 10,000 foreign Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) to set up shop here. Our strength lies in our peace and political stability, rule of law, low crime rate, excellent infrastructure, telecommunications, transport and a highly educated workforce among others. This has made Singapore a magnet for foreign companies/countries, so much so that the US has placed a huge chunk of its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Singapore (US$274 billion) as of 31 December 2018. This is more than the US has invested in Japan and China COMBINED. Meanwhile China is one of Singapore's biggest trading partners and we are China's biggest foreign investor. We were also ranked #2 overall worldwide by one of the world's Big-4 audit firms (PwC) www.pwc.com/sg/en/government-public-services/assets/cities-of-opportunity-sg-facts-sheet.pdf
