  • Summer is here and its field trip season again. I drove a 2 coach move on this sunny summer day with a bunch of school kids going to the museum of Science and Industry. It's always better when you get to drive with someone you like. My friend and right hand man Kelly O'Hara drove the 2nd bus and once we dropped off our group, we found the best Chinese food in a basement food court in the heart of China Town.
    Special thanks to @Strictly Dumpling and @Mike Chen for inspiring me to check out this food court.

    Last Thursday I was heading towards Indianapolis and at the 74-280 junction in Illinois I saw one of your coaches apparently heading west. Of course I thought of you and your channel immediately! I remember thinking "what are the odds that that's James driving."

    Wow! I just found the motor coach channel, and it led me to this channel. I’m a truck driver. But I’ve always been fascinated with the busses. When I was a kid, the only way we could travel any distance, was on a greyhound. I can still remember the smell of diesel in the bus garages, and me wanting to always sit in the front seat, across from the driver, to watch what was going on. I’m subscribed, and will be watching more of these bus trips. THANK YOU for making those!

    I love all of your videos James. I’m getting excited for my new job coming up. I only have one week left to fulfill my two week notice for my current job and then it’s time to dive into my new job of driving charter motor coaches. I continue to watch everything I can find on your channel to enhance my knowledge. Watching you lift all of those cargo doors for luggage makes me wonder how long will it be before they all become automatic like the back door on SUVs. Push a button and a hydraulic motor pushes door open and close for you, wouldn’t that be nice! ✌️out.

    Love these trip videos. I had watched Motorcoach World for some time, but stumbled across this channel in the past week. Your videos are very nostalgic for me. My dad drove for Continental Trailways and later Greyhound post-merger, as well as a local charter company here in Atlanta. I grew up going to work with him and riding buses on his schedule runs, mainly in the 80s. (That is how I came across your Motorcoach World channel thanks to your awesome history of the Eagle!) A unique and very special way to grow up.
    He passed in 1998 so I have not been on very many buses in recent decades. But your “over the shoulder” shots take me back to sitting in the front seat headed down the highway. He would be blown away at all the technology in these modern coaches. Light years beyond the sparse dashes of the Eagle 5s and MC9s! He’d probably gripe about it - he hated it when Greyhound started having the drivers enter their passenger counts into computer terminals in the 80s! 🤣
    Looks like Peoria runs a great operation there! Keep up the good work. New videos here will be must watch!!

      The private sector works when there’s competition. AMTRAK has some routes that are better than others but overall, it still loses money. Think of it this way, if there was truly a demand for passenger rail service, the freight haulers would be tripping over themselves to offer it. No, private motor coach operators competing with each other is a good thing.

    • @JWangvlogs
      @JWangvlogs  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Mister KentC. Thanks for the comment. Yes they do make GPS units specially for trucks to identify what roads and bridges a truck will not fair well on. THey do not make one specially for buses. I dont know how well those truck GPS units do on updating drivers on construction.

    • @man_on_wheelz
      @man_on_wheelz Před 2 lety +1

      I believe so, you can actually find special GPS units on Amazon that you can enter your vehicle height and it assures you won't get caught on a road with low bridges. Width, I'm not so sure. Part of my job here in Chicago (no less) is to draw traffic control plans for construction, and one rule we must stick to is allowing the traffic lane to remain no less than, I believe, 11 feet wide to always accommodate for CTA busses or else the permit department won't issue us a permit. Granted, they only get antsy like this about roads with bus routes on them, but chances are you won't be driving a motor coach or a semi truck down a street with ultra tight construction lanes on it. That tight squeeze he had to turn on in the video was Lake Shore Dr., and as tight as it was, as you can see he still made it. Semi trucks aren't allowed on there anyway but CTA busses do pass through there so they had to stick to that 11 foot or more lane width when placing those barricades.

    When you're taking a trip like this, do you get to choose which coach you drive? I remember you saying you preferred one over another, but do you get to walk into the garage and say "I'm taking that one today"? Assuming of course that it's not down for maintenance.

    • @JWangvlogs
      @JWangvlogs  Před 2 lety +6

      Hey David! Typically no. The coaches are assigned by a collaboration between our fleet coordinator and technicians based on distance of the trip, needs of the group, and vehicle maintenance schedules. Sometimes if there are other coaches available I have the perk as a manager to change my coach assignment, however I clear it with the techs and fleet coordinator as well as the charter sales person to make sure that I am not jeopardizing any kind of requests or requirements. But for the most part our drivers including me, drive what we are assigned. A lot of logistics goes into figuring out the daily coach assignments.. especially if its super busy. So it usually irritates our team members when they have to juggle buses around and change a bunch of other drivers bus assignment's because someone is trying to drive a particular bus they like or have bonded with LOL.

    So i have a question,
    I work at an airport,
    We take a shuttle from employee parking to the terminal
    They are the long variant shuttle bus
    As you a passenger cabin mounted on an f 550 truck
    My question is
    Ive been on f350 shuttles and 550 shuttles
    The 550s are much much more rough of a ride. Why is that?

    • @JWangvlogs
      @JWangvlogs  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Adam... Hmmm. I honestly don't know but I can speculate. I would say the 550 has stronger leaf springs designed to carry more payload.. It was designed to be a truck to haul heavy items. And when you but a bus body on it with people expecting a comfortable ride, the suspension will not deliver since its designed to haul a heavier payload than the smaller F350's. But don't take my word for it. LOL

      @@JWangvlogs thank you. I thought of the question because i saw some of the similar style shuttles on your lot.. dont know if they are the glavals built the same as the airport ones but it made me.think of it

      I too currently drive shuttles at the airport for FedEx employees and pilots in Indianapolis. Those buses are killing me. Right know we have at least six of them that the air seat is broken and have been for over six months. They won’t fix them and that is what pushed me over the edge to find another job. After 8-10 hours in these I feel like bronco Billy 🥴😵‍💫.

      Heavier suspension. Buses like that are fine for airport/hotel shuttle but they won’t hold up for longer distance use.
