    I've umpired behind the plate before and I've pitched from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played pro or college. So I have been on both sides of the fence but being behind the plate is much tougher than what fans think. Because they don't have that box to go by and they have to make calls in real time. Plus you have two catchers on both teams who does a very good job in framing pitches and at times they make it hard on the umpire on what's a ball and what's a strike

    • @MassBoost
      @MassBoost Před 2 měsíci +1

      Sure it's a bit tougher behind that plate, but just like anyone that's a professional, ball player, athlete, or otherwise, you should have the skills to be able to at least be somewhat close in your strike and ball calling. I think if you get bad grades in calling balls and strikes, and we can justify this somewhat with things like the Umpire Scorecards, you reward good balls and strike callers behind the plate more, while guys like Angel Hernandez and others ump mostly in the field, or not at all.

    • @Mitten4371
      @Mitten4371 Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@MassBoost
      Unfortunately that's not how it works because most umpires use a rotation system and when it's time for you to be behind the plate. Well your behind the plate whether you want to or not but at this level there are so many good catchers who knows how to frame pitches. That makes it tough for the umpire to call balls and strikes at times

    • @MassBoost
      @MassBoost Před 2 měsíci

      @@Mitten4371 I never implied that's how it works one bit. But just like the game of baseball, where we are seeing rule changes seemingly on a yearly basis, the way they go about allowing umpires to be able to make calls behind the plate can be adjusted as well. Just like subpar ball players don't get to see playing time on a regular basis due to their substandard performance, there's no reason that umpires can't be held to the same standard of being allow to be behind the plate. If you've ever looked at the Umpire Scorecards site, they don't care whether balls are called balls or strikes, they assess if each pitch and if it's a ball or a strike, and assess the umpire's on their call to be accurate or not. It's not about pitch framing, it whether they make the correct call more often than not regardless on what he catcher does. We can quantify that, just like we can quantify pitches, their spin rates, and their movement according to statcast.

There was some magical method to teach the umpires to be able tell when a ball is over the plate or isn't. Would you then say that they hurt or ruined the game by eliminating bad calls?
