Aww thanks for liking the comment.I have a CZcams channel czcams.com/channels/sK9f3lalL5qcDT-9MBBvfg.html ,can you subscribe? It would mean a lot.I think I should take down my 2 videos and restart idk
you are amazing and I commend you for well representing our countries way of speaking. I also admire that you reply to your commenters, exerts a form of relation to your subscribers.
I love this! My grandpas and family on the father side are all Trini, I grew up in Venezuela and I lost my accent and want to come back to it so bad đą
Many thanks for your video. You speak as one will expect you to speak, which is good. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. No one can read a book in a dialect if it is not written in dialect. It goes without saying. If a teacher ask you to read a passage from Shakespeare or the Guardian newspaper, you wouldn't read it in dialect! The Trini accent is the most beautiful in the world and I have heard many educated and not so educated people, saying this and they are all none Trinidadian. I live in London for over 40 years. From the age of 8 years, I was schooled in London and know 2 Trinidadian children that went to school with me, still retaining their accent after 40 years. I know old people living in the UK for 70 years, still retaining their accents. From the age of 8 years, a person really has to consciously work hard to loose all their accent . If you don't want too, you won't. In cosmopolitan London, there are no pressure for someone to loose their accent, or to be English, like it is in the USA . One's identity is one of the most important thing in the world, as it defines you as a person. I never want to be considered anything but a Trinidadian, even though most of my life has been in the UK. I hate when I visit Trinidad and people refer to me as English; as I consider it an insults. I was born in Trinidadian. Likewise, I hate English people saying to me, you can't be from Trinidad ( because you are not black or indian); where are you originally from. My reply, I was born in Trinidad and so was my parents, great gran and their grandparents! More often it stops any further query and allows them to think. However, some will say, "well you don't look like a Trinidadian"! I often ask them, to tell me how a Trinidadian is suppose to look! This happens a lot in the UK, as many light skinned Trinidadian, will not admit to being Trinidadian and conceal their identity. This harks back to confused concept of who we are as a nation. South Africans, Colombians, Malaysian and others from diverse communities have no issues with their identity. Those who do admit to being Trinidadian, will give their White heritage from Europe, as if marks superiority! The fact of the matter is, we all have a past heritage from another country, be it Africa, India, Europe, Middle East etc, unless we are an indigenous Indian, of which there are no full indigenous people. It is so telling when teenagers and grown up people, go to the USA for a few months /years and put on an American accent. I guess it defines our insecurity an belief that those who live in the USA or the UK are more sophisticated than us. That is so far from the truth. As a social worker in the UK who also worked in the USA, I have worked with and amongst all races and cultures and I can honestly say the social values, moral attitudes and our education standards of the past in Trinidad was invaluable and I have only seen it in very few cultures . I am fully aware that those past values, social standards and education no longer exist for the majority in Trinidad now. Hence, the reason for the chaotic culture, high illiteracy and confused identity .
Subtitles a godsent! Watching from Hamburg Northern Germany. Just reading Land of Love and drowning, from Tiphanie Yanique, who, I assume, used partly a creole voice. I noticed that You talk about Your "accent" I thought Creole is considered a language in its own right, or do You mean a certain accent of Creole? Whatever it is, it sounds wonderful! All the best, especially for the huricane recovery!
Trini accent is mesolect, Tobago accent is basilect...Trini draws influence from english, welsh, french, Indian and African ...Tobago draws mainly from English, African and French.
