    This is a great review, but one thing the Tonal sales rep don’t tell you, is that once you cancel the monthly membership, they also take away the different weight modes as smart flex, eccentric and burn mode, which is misleading because those are features the machine should be able to let you use regardless of keeping membership or not.
    It’s a nice machine.

    • @GirlyButScrappy

      This is literally the only reason I am not buying one. I bet a lot of people are like me, so imagine how much money they could be making if the membership was actually optional, not required. I mean, I wouldn't even pay $5/month for the machine to have full functionality. That should come with the $3k price tag. The only thing the membership should offer are classes. 🤷‍♀️

      @@GirlyButScrappy yes it would be great if the monthly membership was free. But I think people are not understanding that this is suppose to replace going to the gym. Which means there's a market for people who would pay the same amount in membership to get it at Home. If you only payed 3000 for the machine, after 4 years you would be getting a home gym digital for free. How will they continue to make monthy is you are not paying some type of fee. They risk going bankrupt in the long term to get it cheaper for a particular customer. It's their business model to charge the membership fee. If you are not willing to pay a cheap 5 dollars a month I don't think you deserve the flexibility of the device. I'm eyeing right now and I'm not balling but this is a game changer but very pricey.

    GREAT REVIEW!! I have one. FYI, Tonal's official method of doing the RDL is while facing the machine for safety (so that it doesn't pull you into the machine during an accident). Also there is another way to disengage the digital weight during a session; just tilt the bar asymmetrically in one direction and the machine will automatically think you are having problem and let go of the weights.

    Best review I've seen. If this guy is struggling with the machine than it will probably be more than enough for me for a lifetime. I just got my Tonal and I'm 11 workouts in. The best thing I can say about is that the programs and coaches make you want to come back to do your workouts. That's more than worth the 49 bucks a month. There are hundreds of available programs and workouts. The machine is tough and pushes you, and the spotter mode could be a bit better, but so far I'm blown away.

  • @Diaszurana
    @Diaszurana Před 3 lety +181

    I'm ok with spending the money for the machine itself, and I looked this video up because I was interested in buying one, but I'm wary of buying anything that REQUIRES a subscription. I'd like to know what exactly are the features I'd lose if I cancelled the subscription, and just as importantly, what features will be left.
    Also, after spending over $3000 for the machine itself, I think that $49 a month is a very high asking price. For $3k, it really should come with everything I need to keep fit. Why should I pay extra each month for the stuff I need to actually fully take advantage of something I paid for? It's like the initial (steep) $3k+ is nothing more than a membership fee...

    • @JonathanTurner1998
      @JonathanTurner1998 Před 2 lety +36

      I couldn’t agree more! I was sent this video by one of the Tonal agents to show me a review of someone that “doesn’t” necessarily need some of the functions that come with the membership, but seems to appreciate them anyway. I’m still not convinced, and your sentiments are almost verbatim what I expressed to the agent. Ok they want to get an extra $600 for 1 year ok…but then if you cancel you lose a lot of the functionality of the machine is BOGUS and in my opinion kind of crooked. I made a suggestion of a tiered subscription for people who still want to keep the functionality, but just don’t want all of the workouts and extra stuff that comes with the membership. She told me that they don’t have any plans for a tiered subscription. SUCKS!

      @@JonathanTurner1998 of course they would send you this review, unfortunately. He is sponsored by them so his came to him free of charge. Hence why he never says whether the subscription is good or bad. I like honest and real opinions not one that is based off of someone being sponsored.

    • @vrASMR180
      @vrASMR180 Před 2 lety +12

      @@JonathanTurner1998 My main issue is the subscription price. I mean there are a few gyms around me that have $10 memberships and $20 memberships. So for me I can justify this machine being a replacement for the gym and $10 up to $20 a month is acceptable and I wouldn't complain. But $49 a month? I don't think I have a gym around here that charges that much. If there was it would be the gym I avoid lol
      So mentally it's a roadblock for sure. But this is Tonal 1.0 and if the price can be reduced for version 2.0, and more consumers buy one, the monthly price will go own. It's all about volume. Thousands of people paying $10 a month basically forever is much more profitable than a few hundred paying $50 monthly and always thinking about cancelling. Overall I'm excited for this product, but more so for future iterations.

    • @debirobinsonwellness8131
      @debirobinsonwellness8131 Před 2 lety +2

      @@bushboy8156 It comes with the straps and cables, just not with the bar, rope, bench and ability to wirelessly turn on/off the weight. But when he said it was 3500, that included all of the accessories. Regarding the $50/month I think everyone is under playing what you get for the $50. First of all, it's unlimited accounts so the entire family and friends can use it with their own account. It comes with hundreds of workouts and multi-workout programs, live workouts and it also knows your weights so no setting. It also adjust to your strength and will constantly adjust the weight. It gives you detailed progress and strength scores as well as so much more. It's the subscription features that really make this something special. If you are the type of person who just wants to do your own thing, sure you can do that, but I think for the vast majority of users, it's the subscription that motivates them and makes the difference. Last, even if you are a workout fanatic, you are likely working out by doing what you like all the time. On Tonal, with the workouts, you will be doing many more movements and working out muscles you were neglecting before. The workouts are similar to what you would do with a personal trainer. They include stretching before and after, motivation and many of the workouts include intense cardio too.

    Assembly by myself was not too hard. I took my time and followed the diagrams. I particularly like the pictures and names of the exercises organized by muscle groups on the front of the czcams.com/users/postUgkxKJHyBZ9I1py9vVi-XLpEBg0y-qmdhn3q . Considering the number of exercises it has a relatively small footprint. I needed a machine that was not too tall because I only have 79" headroom in my cabin and this was just over 78". It is easy to use, seems to be well made, and I am pleased with my purchase. I am doing upper body muscles on Monday and Thursday. Lower body exercises are being done on Tuesday and Friday. Not using it on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. I am a reasonably fit 66 year old man and this is a great workout.

    This is objectively a really good home fitness machine. Based on the functionality and capabilities, the execution is almost perfect. The biggest negative is that you're obligated to pay $60 per month or else you lose all but the most basic functionality. That could be worth it if you're really into home fitness. But, $60/mo to me seems more like a lease payment, which I think might be a better way of doing things.

    Pros:
    1. Can turn the weight on and off.
    2. Advanced modes such as chains and eccentric.
    3. Spotter mode which allows you to finish the set.
    4. 1 lb increments. For some people, making a 5 to 10 pound jump is a bit extreme. The ability to increase the weight by a pound allows for constant improvement.
    5. The AI. It calculates the weight based on the number of reps you want to do.
    6. Small footprint
    7. Built in coaching
    Cons:
    1. And it’s a doozy - the price. There’s no getting around the fact that it’s expensive.
    2. The 200 pounds may be limiting for some.
    3. If you opt to not pay the monthly subscription, it loses a lot of the features.

    The subscription model is a scam. I was 100% going to buy this machine until I read about the subscription requirement to access the full functionality of this machine.
    $50 per month is more than most gym memberships. I want home gym equipment for convenience and to SAVE money, not take up room in my house and spend as much as I would on a gym membership. I get it, they created this library of content but that doesn't justify a $50/month price tag. Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, countless other streaming content providers charge around $10 per month. There's no reason Tonal can't charge a similar price to access their content. Especially with a $3000 price tag on the machine itself. This would be like Netflix forcing you to buy a $3000 TV and then charge you $50 per month to watch content on it. Complete and absolute greed.

But, as I've gotten older and have a little more affluence, and am no longer trying to hit home runs, this machine marks off all the boxes for me. And it's a numbers game, as more people would rather watch Netflix, thus driving down the prices, than workout consistently on a fitness machine.

    Your review is outstanding. Truly answered all of my questions. You are clearly in shape-I think the 200 pounds makes some of us think its not meant for lifting etc-Howe ver after seeing your resistance and ability to work out on this really made a difference in my perception of the unit. Instead of being a gimmick-it has real world use age and can keep everyone in good shape following with good eating habits etc. Thank you for the review.

    It looks really cool. The only thing that is holding me back is the $50 monthly subscription. I already have a peloton subscription and a zwift subscription and didn't want to add another subscription to this unit.

  • @treydrier3169
    @treydrier3169 Před 2 lety +2

    For those who are upset with the $50 monthly subscription fee, look at Orange Theory or some of the other trainer assisted classes. They run $125 to $150 a month and you have to drive to get there and be around 20 other sweaty heavy breathing customers. To me, the subscription fee is cheap. However the $3,500 up front cost of the machine is where they get you. With Orange Theory, Spenga and the others you are not actually paying for anything up front. Just the monthly fee for classes. If you finance this machine and have a monthly finance fee + $50 monthly subscription fee it probably adds up to the same cost as Orange Theory and some of the others but you get more diversified work outs and the convenience (and cleanliness) of your home. Plus lots of different types of work outs - not the same thing over and over and over again like Orange Theory.

    I watch your videos and there’s no doubt that you know what you’re doing. Love this demonstration - the best part for me is that we can do the equivalent of a pull up - for many of us home workout guys, we don’t have a way to do a pull up.
    Also, the chest fly exercise - I’ve had 2 frozen shoulders, so getting into the fly position itself can be tough. Thanks for the demo!
