    Not a Liberal supporter, but I think Mr. Chrétien was a marvellous Prime Minister. He never took guff from anyone. Wrote him a letter of thanks when he refused to invade Iraq with the USA. Got a reply from him too! Still have it too. Way to go, Jean!

    I met Jean Chretien last Sunday in the airport in Toronto!!! I was SO excited! No one around him. he had his boarding pass, etc. no line up. I HAD to engage!!!! He was SO polite, asked me where I was from, going, etc... I didn't want to be so bold, as to ask him the same questions. I was just delighted, that he was happy to meet a fellow Canadian!!!

    Chretien ran surpluses from 1997 till he left office in 2003. During Chretien's leadership, Canadian government was on track to reduce the national debt from 63.8% of GDP in 1997 to 41% in 2003, and in 2008, the federal debt of Canada as percentage of GDP was 30%. As a libertarian, I think Jean Chretien did an amazing job.

      77tubuck That's pretty ironic with your statement. Chretien was not at all violent and had good judgement. That's why he made Canada stay out of the cluster fuck of a disaster that was the Iraq War and probably saved thousands of Canadians. While Harper accused Chretien of supporting Saddam Hussein. With that one decision it showed that Chretien was a good leader that protected Canadians. If you don't realize that him making staying out of Iraq was a good decision there is something wrong with you.

      Your entire statement was a red herring. Taking a confrontation with ONE person and relating it to his overall job as a PM while ignoring the best decision he made as a PM and protecting all of Canada from the cluster fuck of a disaster that was Iraq. And yes we have it on video tape of Harper accusing Chretien of supporting Saddam Hussein for rejecting the participation in the invasion of Iraq.

      I am not a Liberal supporter, but I totally appreciate Jean Chretien’s sense of humour. Though we might have disagreed a bit on some of our political views, I could definitely have hung out with him and chatted about those differences...
      I am sad to see how Canadian politics is moving in a similar polarizing direction as has happened in the USA in the past couple of decades

    During the Quebec Referendum my sister was at a ralley in Montreal... In the crowd she was push down accidently by bystanders trying to get close to the PM Chretien who was walking by. As she was about to fall, the PM who was walking by her, put out his arm/hands and stoppoed her from falling...

    A few decades ago, I attended a speech he was giving at the uofa,,,,, so personable. All these years later, my grandson has spent time in Quebec, working and learning French.. I always say to him that if he passes Jean on the street, say hey to him from a huge fan. Thank you for making politics in Canada soooo terribly hilarious, Rick.... You're a treasure..and I hope you are well.

      He had a sly sense of humor on one memorable occasion... when Brian Mulroney's official portrait was unveiled. Chretien was the PM, and he took the opportunity to get in a little dig at his old opponent:
      "We are gaddered 'ere today to 'ang Brian Mulroney on Parliament 'ill."
      The startled look on Mulroney's face was priceless! :-D

    I met him in person when I was in Air Cadets back late 1995/96 ( i was 15-16), I even spoke french to him since I was from New Brunswick, I blew my captains mind when I managed to get us to sit in a real House of Common meeting for 30min, something not many can ever do in there life. was really awesome, a moment I cherish.

    I have to say that I was never more proud of Chretien as when he refused to illegally invade Iraq and respect the UN. That made me proud to be a Canadian. Harper not so much, he is taking us in the opposite direction.

All together, the non-Harper vote is 15 to the Harperites 10, yet the harperites win again. We NEED a flagship non-con party that every anti-Harperite can get behind. Sadly, I can't see that happening.

    I love that he never took himself too seriously, and he seemed more genuine because of how willing he was to be a normal guy. Trudeau does this too, but it never feels as authentic as it did with Chrétien.

    I remember him saying he was going to decriminalize marijuana ... the crowd gasped .. and his response was "hey, dont start smoking right away"... (-_-) lol ... now that it has actually been legalized in Toronto ... I see him as a political pioneer .... down to earth guy who valued his wife's opinion over his own career .... in my mind he was the last real prime minister Canada ever had ... everyone after him was/is substitute teachers

    That man is perhaps the GREATEST canadian politician. If not for him our charter would not be here today. He served as Justice Minister for Trudeau and was himself a great PM show respect he has accomplished more then you ever will and good weve been doing well without the stupidity that the americans deal with
