  • While founding the Space Frontier Foundation, in the early times space activism didn't pay. My day job was producing media for space projects. DC-X was the precursor to SpaceX and Blue Origin. As Gerry Pournelle put it: "This rocket takes off and lands in its tail, just as God and Robert Heinlein intended." The funds came from what was called Reagan's "Star Wars" project (BMDO) to defend against nuclear war. We in the Frontier movement were more focused on how Cheap Access to Space enabled by reusable rocketships would help open the Frontier than on military strategery. I wrote and produced this video as part of the DC-X Vertical Take-Off Vertical Landing project. I was under contract to McDonnell Douglas. My company at the time was Morningstar Media.
DC-X is one reason you see so many space projects with X in the name. It inspired us all - including that guy Musk. (BTW - the airliner sequence still makes me smile - and still applies!)

Legitimately pretty awesome. Inspiring to think how far ahead we were even way back then.

Many people think SpaceX was the first to launch and land rockets. I have had to use (links to) DC-X documentaries to convince some of this fact. Thank you for posting this!

@@hiddeninternets5894Actually Elon is a Paradigm Buster. He's the a Software developer with no formal training. But he developed PayPal and sold it to Ebay for a Billion dollars and he got half.
He wanted to change the world for the better so in invested in Tesla at a very very early stage and saw the engineers were over engineering. His observations cut the cost of the Model S making it profitable.
He took the rest of his money and created SpaceX. He drafted Tom Mueller the eventual creator of Merlin engine on the Falcon 9 Rocket.
There are a lot of smart people out their in their fields but they don't have the organizational and future vision of Elon Musk. And Musk isn't tied to the traditional way of doing things. He's not afraid of risk like most CEOs who would do things according to the industry traditions.
No one else can claim credit for reusable rockets. No one else can claim credit for making EVs marketable and sexy. That was ONLY ELON MUSK.
Many may have had the idea...but they couldn't make it happen. They were the wrong type thinkers. Elon breaks conventions to make it happen.
