My Favourite Things - Tutorial | Common Chord Progression Identification

  • Learning a new song such as this one, My Favourite Things, is a process which takes place 90% away from the piano and 10% at it. The 90% involves listening to the original and then variations, if desired, until it's playable on one's Internal Jukebox. The lyrics are then acquired, thus the structure and melody are known passively.

    Bonjour Dan.. nouveau commentaire sur ce tutorial !.. j'avais dit magnifique..mais c'est bien plus que ça, cette exercice,ce titre est immense dans son apport de connaissances,de connections , d'articulations !. j'essaie de le jouer en " dynamique" comme tu nous l'apprend et c'est " EXTRAORDINAIRES".. à tous les niveaux ,ce titre est musical et nous apporte réellement le sentiment que nous cherchons, nous pianistes!..Encore mille fois merci pour ça, Des fois pour les aguerris,ce n'est rien mais pour nous qui apprenons c'est magique avec du travail bien entendu !..Dan ❤

    Ooooh I do like those b9's. Very nice Dan, thank you. So helpful to 'low-hours pilots' to hear those 2-5-1's introduced. Filling the pool, bucket by bucket.

    • @danthecomposer
      @danthecomposer  Před 6 lety

      Yes, a b9 is what makes a diminished upper chord structure so it sounds sweet. C, E, G, Bb, Db is C7(b9) but the E, G, Bb, Db is a diminished chord, you see? More on 251s here: czcams.com/video/wZ3_i7E76mE/video.html

    Hello there. First of all want to say Im a big fan of your work and an avid follower. Thanks much for your videos they're of much help and very interesting especially for adding a bit of philosophical discussion to music. I have a suggestion/request if you don't mind. Do you think you could prepare a video going over ABBBA's "The winner takes it all"? Not only a tutorial on how to play but also do some analysis on the structure/style etc? Thanks again! Cheers

    That modulation that takes us back to G at the end is an A7 dominant rather than a minor in the original and sounds better this way I think!

    Thank you for identifying the chords and describing how one arrives at the correct names of each chord to this classic song! However, I have hard time memorizing and recalling the chord progressions that go with particular songs when I want to sit down at a piano to play songs spontaneously.
    Can you describe how I can reconstruct the chord progressions step by step and on the fly (e.g. identifying the basic triad chord containing the current melodic note or the note immediately following a passing melodic note, going down the circe of fifths to work towards the tonic note, etc.) as I play the song melody on my right hand?

    • @danthecomposer
      @danthecomposer  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi there, thanks for your comment - just seen it! I have a few videos on helping with chord progressions and often it's a process which takes place away from the piano, mastering the progression numerically (so that you can play it in any key). Also, it seems you need some diatonic chord help. Perhaps try these two videos and tell me if they help. If not, I'll make a new one for you on the topic: czcams.com/video/3WbZhc79H0M/video.html / czcams.com/video/h4bZlontz2A/video.html

    Hello. Thanks for another great video!
    I have one question, how do you play melody without thinking? Like when i learning a piece i have no confidence in my melody unless i've played it many times, and i feel like playing like this i rely too much on muscle memory and not on what i have in my mind.
    Sorry if i've worded something weird, not a native speaker.

    • @danthecomposer
      @danthecomposer  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello Nikita. Welcome and thank you :)
      Your question is good. You asked, "How do you play melody without thinking?" Then you wrote, "I have no confidence in my melody..." There is your answer and, as always, it is about the mind, not the fingers.
      Consider this article first: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2016/01/the-fear-of-spontaneity.html

    Great tutorial as always Dan! I find very useful also the link to the score with the lyrics but google doesn't let me download it from my iPad, so I have to go with a couple of screenshots of it. Maybe Dropbox would be a better choice, you can share whole folders and even move the files without losing the public link to them. Just an idea, thanks

      Yes. You need to get the patterns, chords and melody down.. especially away from the piano in your mind before you can start getting fancy. You may enjoy this article: piano-jazz.blogspot.com/2016/12/learning-songs-quickly.html

      Hello Rosie, thanks for your comment and welcome. You're starting quite high up the mountain... 6251, and related content, can be found here... but major scale mastery is unavoidable: czcams.com/video/wDeDccsm3YE/video.html / czcams.com/video/heEVryaj-wI/video.html (major scale mastery).

      A scale is constructed of a root note and a series of half or whole steps upward in a pattern. A major scale is a scale with the pattern: R W W H W W W. I can index this pattern such that R=1, then the next note = 2, then 3, 4, through 7. For example, in C major, C natural= 1, D natural =2, E natural=3, F natural =4, etcetera. These numbers are called "scale degrees". I can play a major triad, minor triad, dominant seventh, etcetera chord rooted at any of these scale degrees. For example a major triad rooted at the 6th scale degree of C major would be A major triad. I can make a sequence of these chords, and label then by there scale degrees. So here 6251 means "play a chord at scale degree 6, then play a chord at scale 2, then 5 then 1". Now what are these chords? Major, minor, seventh? 6251 will not tell you. You need to make some inferences. There are some common tropes, called "cadences" that can help. Note: a cadence pairs both the type of chord and the scale degree information.
      Note, there are names for the scale degrees: tonic=1, supertonic = 2, mediant = 3, subdominant = 4, dominant=5, submediant = 6, leading tone = 7.
      Also scale degrees are often written as roman numerals to avoid confusion.
