A common problem is playing in time. This comes not from the lack of a sense of rhythm or the inability to comprehend to Internal Metronome philosophy but from an interfering conscious mind.
---
*I must also apologise that the last word I said was 'Internal Piano' - I of course meant 'Internal Metronome'.
This video provides some visual content to compliment the more detailed article provided above on three ideas to carry out at the piano (along with three others away from the piano).
First, keep things simple and use your left then right hand to lay down the internal metronome 'ticker' whilst the other plays major scales on the beat. Then, try off the beat, never losing the count.
Second, play random melodies (I propose from the chromatic scale) with both hands together and independently but never losing that internal metronome/count (if you using a time signature).
Feeling a little lost at the piano? Consider walking away for a while: piano-jazz.blogspot.com/2017/0...
Finally, play around with chord progressions and even sections of repertoire you're working on and see how you have finally become an observer INWARDS, observing the internal metronome's steadiness, as well as an observer OUTWARDS, observing the hands/body 'surf' atop that steadiness. Both happen without conscious interference and both are possible for every body.

Thank you Dan for this inspiring video. With rhythm, all around us in nature, how great to have it internally. All you demonstrate makes so much sense.
Thank you mm, your comment is most appreciated once again! I hope your sense of rhythm is better understood now.
Best,
Dan
Well said, Dan. We can experience rhythm everyday in our surrounding. I found rhythm from my leaking faucet one day many years ago. It dropped about every two seconds so I used that as a quarter note for 4-4 meter. Then , I played two notes for one drip, thus became one eighth note, soon I played four notes for one drop, thus became my one sixteenth note, so on and so forth. Dan is right. It is not from your left hand but from your brain. I thought that was kind of fun to share.
Sir Liao, a splendid comment. Thank you for sharing! It's great that you connected with it. A true Water Pianist!!
Does anyone else have real-life experiences of finding rhythms?
Best,
Dan
Absolutely brilliant, and simple. Thanks very much Dan.
Thank you and welcome!

That's very kind of you to say, thank you! Keep up the great content!
Till now, I always used my legs to keep with the R.
But never had the idea of importance of rythm with the whole body
I like very much the second part, playing random notes.
Hello there! It's fine to use your leg but it does prove the point that your leg is not your left hand :)
I hope you had a chance to read the article, too!
Yes, random notes is very liberating. You could perhaps combine it with this video: czcams.com/video/5vkOqjByveY/video.html

Hello Dan

There are many fine concert pianist who are holding seminar retreats in
which it is required that the training involve the engagement of mind / memory / affirmation /visualization of performance and EVEN THE
DISCOVERY OF NEW COMPOSITION FRAGMENTS /In other words Dan ,I think you
are on the correct path as to your teaching.
Cheers
Bruce
Thank you muchly for your support then! It's good to know there are some who see the truth in the teachings of the mind.

Hi Dan would you please play" Autumn Leaves" your beautiful style Its structure is considered a good learning vehicle or tool for chord progression in E flat Thx
Hi A Smith, good request.
Two things: 1. There are already a lot of tutorials for A.L but I will put it in a future '3 Song Play Along' video (one here: czcams.com/video/R-cPBq0bLxc/video.html ) - 2. Why do you think the chord progression only applies to E flat? This tells me you are yet to realise that all 12 keys are totally interchangeable and that whatever you learn in one key can be applied to another.
I would recommend this video: czcams.com/video/wDeDccsm3YE/video.html - as well as this: czcams.com/video/cYGWAD6kyzI/video.html - of course, your 12 major scales must also be mastered before you attempt anything else! czcams.com/video/heEVryaj-wI/video.html
Keep me updated!
Best,
Dan
danthecomposer, I've been doing your purposeful pianist playlist. I've been on and off playing the piano but I really do want to get better, playing consisitently. What lesson do you advise i start on? Should I got through your whole course then start learning songs, etc.
Hi Joel , thank you for you comment and welcome to my channel. Delighted to read that you want to get better! :)
I would suggest this article: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2017/06/five-beginner-videos.html - and this playlist that you've commented on, but from part 1 of course.
I also recommend this: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2017/01/essentials-mastery.html
Identify first your musical personality: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2016/09/play-what.html - it is very important!
Feel free to email or comment on any video and I'll be around to help: danthecomposer@gmail.com

Dan
Thanks Dan! Really appreciate it!
I find it strange that some songs I have some difficulty getting the rhythm or timing right but other songs I get it down well. The song I have trouble with is Havana by Camila Cabello. Do view it for me of you don't mind. I can hear the beat or rhythm in my head but translating it to the piano is another story any tips
I didn't know this song but I've listened: czcams.com/video/HCjNJDNzw8Y/video.html
Your left hand need only play one bass note each time: G, Eb and D and the right hand play Gm, Eb and D major. Try it like this: RH: G, Bb, D / G, Bb, Eb / F#, A, D... and simplify the rhythm by playing LH, RH, LH, alternating... see if you can get this down when listening to it.

Dan
what kind of Yamaha piano you have?

danthecomposer thanks for the quick reply I was curious about it and I'm looking for a keyboard again i had one in foster care when the one family put 2 and 2 together and found what helped with depression and autism with my bipolar depression the Yamaha ytp 255 karoke machine and disney musical movies and taking me to the school musicals around the 2 different countites helped me a lot. I finally put 2 and 2 together 10 years later. I am a beginner lol so looking for keyboard that i could label abcd on white keys like another person does in her tutorials on how to play certain songs etc. I like gow you do the videos so far keep up good work
Hi there. Thank you for sharing your personal story.
I will not let you do such nonsense as writing letters on keys; it is useless, impeding and childish. You are better than that.
First of all, master your 12 major scales and major/minor triads. Also, use them, and the chromatic scale, to develop finger independence. See here: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2017/06/five-beginner-videos.html - and here: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2017/01/essentials-mastery.html
If you write letters on your keys, I will personally throw your keyboard out the window!!! :)
Keep me updated, good man.
Best,
Dan.
Oh, and read this: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2015/11/the-pianists-checklist.html
Oh, and this link will help with good budget keyboards: www.digitalpianoreviewguide.com/how-to-pick-the-best-digital-piano-under-500/
:)
I cringe at writing letters on the keyboard...I mean if you do that you will in big trouble the minute you take them away...I didn't that once before not long and then had to break my brain from it.. I now just know the letters visually whether its C# Eb don't matter but I like that I don't depend on that any more
