- HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHOPIN!! In celebration of Chopin's birthday and my 50th Chopin video on my channel I had to post the famous Ballade No.1! I've always wanted to learn it but was too intimidated... All you guys helped me feel like I could play it. Thought it would be cool to use both cameras, I think the audio is kinda out of sync at some parts though haha. This piece was requested by my friend Nadav! Check out his channel: / nadavschneidervid
I don't know where to start. I am so proud of you for finishing this piece. When I asked you if you could play my favourite Ballade you were a little skeptical, because it is a really hard piece!
I knew this piece could have been a challenge for you, I am sure it was challenging and nevertheless, you made it! Congrats! The performance was great. Hard work pay off ;)
Thanks so much Nadav! I was really excited to finally post it. If it weren’t for you I probably wouldn’t have learned it. You motivated me to finish. Just don’t request anymore Ballades!! haha ;D

@@axelespinozavasquez4861 I’ve been procrastinating with that one 😮💨
Nice job, I tried this myself once as well as an amateur. Took me a year of learning but it was worth it for sure ;) Such a beatiful piece. The coda is really difficult.
And play it you did!!! Wow, Joel! This is amazing and so very beautiful! You should be on stage in a concert hall playing on a 10 foot grand piano!
I've been really wanting to tell you I was working on this!! But thought it would be fun to make it a surprise. Thank you so much Miss Maggie! You always motivate me to keep practicing. :D
Thats amazing, man!! Even used.multiple cameras, getting professional!
Hehe, I had a realization that we have 2 cameras so I wanted to try it! Thanks Alan!
Love the old piano sound lol, nice play :D
Thanks so much Harry! You should hear my other piano LOL!
I really like the coda on this! It feels like everyone else tries to fukin speed run it but this was amazing!
Thanks a lot!! Yeah, some pianist play it super fast...I guess it's different interpretations.
Exactly what I was thinking man tbf mate you did a great job of this ballade man absolutely brilliant your a talented pianist pal😎
Thank you Kyle!
I liked the coda too, it is all organic!
I like when its agressive sometimes because it means the emotion or rush its so powerful that the piano cant handle the emotion
8:00 to 8:15 my favourite part
Thanks Maryla!
Was this perfect no, flashes of brilliance ..yes. If you played this insane piece just off raw talent alone then I applaud you. Any teacher would love to have you I'm thinking!
Thank you! I took lessons 😌 🎹
Very well done.
And a happy 209th Birthday to Chopin
Thanks Draco! YES happy birthday Chopin. 🎉
Well played, Joel! The sheer amount of emotions throughout this piece is phenomenal, it‘s what makes it one of my absolute favorite pieces of all time. I know, performing it and finding good interpretations for all the different parts is very hard. If you don’t mind I’d leave you some suggestions for improvements:
- Use a bit less pedal throughout the piece. There are points where the sustain pedal can destroy the clarity and voicing, especially in the quick waltz section (5:40). Either only hold the bass notes until you reach the LH chords or don‘t use the pedal at all and play the bass notes staccato. Also, at 8:48, depress the pedal after the chromatic run upwards and press it again after having played the LH chord. It sounds kinda messy with all the notes from the run in the measure before.
- At 4:38, instead of using the fourth finger for both the g#‘s, use the fourth for the first and the fifth for the second, that will help you to get those notes really crisp and accenturated (same goes for LH, use 2-1 instead of 1-1). This also applies to the second climax later in the piece.
- At 8:57, maybe leave a short break after hitting the last notes of the run, and accent these ones instead of the lower gm chord. Same goes for the run afterwards, make that thing loud and excentric and contrast it by playing the following gm chord really softly and misteriously.
I‘d really love to hear another performance of this ballade in the future, maybe in a year or so? This really is a piece that takes long to digest. I also want to record it soon but I’m never really satisfied with what I can do with it lol. Also, do you plan to play other Chopin ballades as well?
Thanks a lot Magnus!! I really appreciate you writing all this! Those are good points, I'll apply them. It does still need work, but I wanted to post it on Chopin's birthday this year. I hope you record it soon! That would be awesome. Yeah, eventually it would be cool to learn all 4. I'll probably do No.3 next, but not sure when. I'm still working on this one! haha
it is also my favourite :)
Обалдеть! 😇🙈 Шикарное исполнение! Слов не подобрать! 😍🥰 Интересно звучит на "Petrof". Движение руки невероятное. Спасибо за исполнение! 🔥
This is a perfect birthday present for Chopin. I wish I could do that, but I don't know why but I feel.....proud of ya. ;)
Thanks Seth!! That means a lot. I've been excited to show you I was working on this puppy. Happy Birthday Chopin! I had to listen to your Chopin melody today. Oh and the Fortnite!
Thanks Joel! :)
You are very talent, this piece is very difficult to face with...amazing work! it's sounds professional.
Thank you so much Mr. Schneider! I really appreciate it!
THE ULTIMATE. JOEL YOU’VE DONE IT!! love that it’s on an upright too! The E flat major second theme was So on point. 😭 Hats off to you! Feel so lucky to be able to watch this again and again!
Haha it took me FOREVER! I stared it March 1st last year. Thank you so much Zach! I feel lucky to have you as my friend!
Omg, I kinda had a feeling you'd post this soon!! I was so happy when I saw this on my subscriptions newsfeed, I took my earphones right away and listened.
Anyway, amazing interpretation, I was sure you'd pull this off wonderfully
Had to wait for Chopin’s bday.
Thank you so much Elena!

Thanks so much for your nice comment, Suheil!!
Now I’m learning this piece along Polonaise Op. 53 and Ballade Op. 47 (My Favourite Ballade) :), I’m currently practicing measures 36-69.
Nice! Best luck on them! 🎶🎹
Amazing performance Joel 💯💯 I must say this may be the best recording of this ballade may be yours ! Good job 👏 Bravo
Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I’m working on No.2 now! 🎶

Oh wow, didn't expect this! That was amazing!!! You rock!
Happy birthday Chopin!!
Thank you so much, GP!! So yeah this is what I've been working on for awhile...I was excited to finally post it for his bday. Next year I should do Ballade No.2 and you'll do Scherzo No.4! ;)
@@JoelRossPiano Haha that would be cool, excpet it's kinda unfair cuz the year after that you can do Ballade 3 but I can't do Scherzo 5 :(
Ah, good point...if you posted Scherzo no.1 we would have been set for 4 years!!
Joel Ross I'm actually planning to doing that Scherzo very soon :)
@@thegreenpianist7683 Cool!
Wow. Just wow. Probably the finest piece of music ever composed and you did it justice! You're an inspiration!
Thank you so much Joseph! That’s nice to hear. I was pretty nervous to post this one since it’s so popular. haha
omgggggggggggggg Joel!!!!! This is SO great and you've put so much effort into one of the most special pieces in the repertoire - I was so excited to see this!!!!! Where to begin - I love how you bring out the nostalgia and longing in the first theme (so well paced and lovely rubato!!!), and it contrasts so well with the agitated sections later on... but I was particularly impressed with the buildup to the wonderful A major recap :)... and your virtuosity in the second half is really impressive, but never overbearing! Well done on the coda - many of my friends who play this piece have told me just how difficult it is, but u coped with the challenges admirably well and the runs were so crisp and cleanly played!!!! I am sure that not only learning but also playing this piece would have been a real journey for u, and I can only imagine how much practice and long hours must have gone into this... so huge congratulations, and look forward to seeing more of these major Chopin works being uploaded soon!!!!
Thanks so much bro!! I was having a long day at work and reading this made the day better. It means a lot! Yeah, it took me forever! I started it March 1st last year... I almost told you I was working on it, but thought it would be fun to make it a surprise. Looking forward to your next upload! :D
A*W*E*S*O*M*E! Joel Ross! Put me down for a dozen of your first album release. Just beautifully played, with feeling. And obviously you have an excellent memory as you didn't reference a music sheet even once. Bravo I say! Thank you for sharing with us.

It is such an amazing performance ! I guess you spent a lot of time on it to obtain this result. I am really impressed, you play with brilliance, speed, but also clarity. One of the most beautiful and technically demanding pieces ever written.
Hey Jeanne, thank you so much! I really appreciate it! Yeah, took me awhile to learn it.
What a beautiful ballade also I love the unic sound of your piano
Thank you so much! 😁
You are amazing my friend cant wait until you make it Big
Thanks so much, Harry! Means a lot coming from you!
Hello, under normal circumstances I am not in the habit of commenting on any video on CZcams, but this time I am doing it:
After a tired and frustrated day, I feel like my day has become better, your fingers are bursting with talent! Thank you for this.
Thanks I appreciate your comment! 😌
really nice performance!! I have been self-learning this composition for about 3 years, and it is glad to see others play this with a different interpretation. Also, your gestures were so well; I learnt a lot from them.
Thank you! That means a lot. Keep it up! 🎹
녹음이 문제였는지는 모르겠으나 강약조절이 명확하게 나타나지 않는 점을 제외하고는 정말 좋네요. 잘 들었습니다. Keep up toe good work man. I do, too, am a huge fan of Chopin.
Very nice! Didn't expect such a performance honestly!
Thank you! I really appreciate it! 😁🎹
Thanks for sharing this. Omg i am so touched. I really like the way you play Chopin's pieces especially this one.❤️❤️❤️
Hey Vicky! Hope you’ve been good. Thank you so much! ❤️
This is so amazing! I just started to learn this piece a few weeks ago, so this popped up on my feed at the right time :) amazing work, now I have another pianist’s performance to use as reference for how I can play the piece once I start polishing it up. Sooo awesome! ✨🌼

Hi Therese! I do love to post Chopin! I can't say how much I appreciate your comment. Thank you so much!
Joel (...) Wow, I'm speechless. Can't describe how amazed I'm by your playing and this wonderful piece. There's so many different passages which all do have their peculiarities. You did very well in contrasting these passages and working them out to their finest. Also takes some immense amount of stamina to get through this entire piece and keeping up great dynamics and precise pedalling. I think now you have really shown what you're able to to with just yourself, a nice piece, a piano, and cameras. Definitely worth your countless hours of practice and probably all of your viewers' time watching :) Have a wonderful day! ~Michael
Can't say how much I appreciate you, Michael! Thanks so much! Reading these comments mean a lot. I always wanted to play this one. Took me a whole year! haha
👽💚 Alien says: Joel Ross! This will be my goal to achieve for the end of the year, *you are a great inspiration* the first quote was so accurate!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it, Alien. It’s an epic piece to learn! 🎹
Stunning performance!! I hope to one day also learn this piece its one of my favorite of chopins work
Thank you so much! It is a Chopin classic 😌
i was so amazed and inspired by watching your play.. you did a really good job with this beautiful piece.
Btw i wanted to ask how do you actually get the right tempo between the two hands when it starts getting complicated and fast, because when i practice i always start slower and then gradually increase the speed but as i do it i kinda get stuck because it’s confusing for me to pratice in different speed it’s like it doesn’t line up on how it should be somehow.
wow, I admire your courage to play and record it! Thank you for fresh interpretation :)
Thank you Anna!! 😊
Ok Joel …. A very very difficult piece to play and you did an amazing job!! Bravo! And you played it on an upright piano. Geez.
Thanks so much Anthony!! I appreciate it. Have a merry Christmas! 😬
Man you really deserve a follow, this is so great, my favorite piece !
Thank you! One of my favorites too. 😊
This is so stunning, I'm pretty much speechless :O ♡
Thanks so much Mewsic!
Beautiful performance, my dream omg
Thank you so much! 🙌🤩
I'm learning this composition, all I have to learn is the "coda" and improve the speed in parts like bar 32, for example.
This piece really exhausts my brain, these quick chords and arpeggios in the "coda" finish me off.
Nice! I KNOW, the coda is crazy. 😓 Keep working on it!
@@JoelRossPiano yeah, it's driving me nuts!
And I would also like to ask questions, those quick chords that occur before the coda. How did you manage to make them so fluid? Even following the fingering, they are not fluid.
YOU GOT THIS! Hmm, at that part staying loose and not tensing up helped me. I also changed some of the fingering. Not sure what edition you’re using, but I have Schirmers. The fingering isn’t always the best, so I kinda experiment with different fingerings and use what feel the most comfortable and natural. 😬
@@JoelRossPiano I'm using the version of "Le Buron de Stockhausen", it's all written at the top of the first page.
I'm trying to play loosen as much as I can, but I can't seem to get the speed if I don't put some force on my fingers.
I'm going slow, playing at 60 bpm and going up according to the clarity that the notes enter in my memory, After all, I still can't sight read.
I also have a question, on page 9, "presto com fueco" after performing the chords, do you use your thumb and index finger to reach the lower notes? Or just the thumb? Those little jumps, you know.
Hey sorry, I didn’t see this. Yeah, practicing slow if the most beneficial way. I spent around 3 months just on the coda lol! And I use my thumb. 😁
Wow, awesome stuff Joel! I've been learning this piece since last spring and man, it is a challenge! Loved your performance, personally I would articulate the melodies at the beginning a bit differently, but other than that I thought it was awesome! Considering the amount of crazy runs and jumps in this piece I thought you handled it pretty well. Keep up the great work, listened to the whole thing!!
Thanks so much Alvin! Yeah, the beginning could be phrased better. I remember you were working on this Ballade too! Yeah it's very difficult...but stick with it! I've been working on it for a year haha.
@@JoelRossPiano Thanks for the support!! Yeah it's been a challenge but me and my teacher are slowly getting it hahah!
This sounds like a nice music to accompany ice skaters, fast and energetic.
This piece was actually used in the Olympics for figure skating!! ⛸️
dude ballade 1 wow!
I had to play something big for Chopin's bday! ;D
Great job! That is a very nice sounding piano. Very impressed with how you handled the treacherous coda as well
Thanks Michael Kaykov! I really appreciate it coming from you!
Congratulations, dear Ross. It is a great achievement and a lot of work obviously. Virtuosic phases are very well mastered : it is impressive (you just seem to be a bit embarrassed in last page, probably because of a lack of training in "hands in parallel" difficulty ...) Your performance is still very poetic. According to my taste you still take too much freedom with tempo (ex : 2 first pages) and probably that you can do even better in transitions (where you seem sometimes in a hurry, maybe because of stress). Your performance is 9 mn 31s, which is very fast (I would be uncapable to play it at such speed !), and you may get some added value to perform it a bit slower in poetic passages. Globally, it is a very impressive performance, knowing that I understand you have just learnt it. Bravo !
Thanks so much, Mr. Poilvet! It means a lot. I've always wanted to play this Ballade! Alright those are some good points, it does still need work. But I had to post it on Chopin's birthday!
Beautiful, amazing job

@@JoelRossPiano well I'm currently learning it, since more than 1 year now, but my small hands really struggles with all those octaves ;) I need some more work and patience :-)
Wow, Joel that's amazing! :D I thought I was dreaming when I saw you posted this! I love Chopin's Ballades so much, but would never be able to play one of them! What an impressive and professional performance! I loved every second of this video! How many hours did you spend working on it? Have you ever watched Krystian Zimerman's performance of the four Ballades on CZcams (they are among my favourite versions of those incredible pieces)?
Hey that means so much, Mr. Classical! Thank you! I wanted to tell you I was doing this one... but thought it would be fun to wait until I learnt it. I started it March 1st last year. YES! Zimerman is awesome. :D

How are we getting this for free? CZcams is amazing. This is dope Joel! I melted, I danced, and the different camera angles. 🙌
Thanks so much Elisa!! I like how you do your camera angles so I thought I'd try it. :)
WOW!! So proud you took the courage to tackle this mater piece. You played amazingly and professionally, and few mistakes as well. No better occasion for a piece like this than Chopin's birthday, too! Wish I uploaded this on his birthday, but I think I'll wait for when I get a Yamaha Grand. How long did it take you to get it to this point, and how long did it take you to learn the notes (not counting the emotion and nuances that take time to develop, I just mean learning the notes alone)? Playing this piece is a big step from the preludes and waltzes/mazurkas, so kudos to you. The only flaws I can think of are minor note issues in the coda and lack of expression/emotion in some parts. This piece requires you to capture the soul of Chopin and the piece, and you did a great job overall with that except for a couple of sections that require it. That being said, you played phenomenally and you should be proud. Can't wait for future uploads!
Thanks so much bro!! :) Yeah, at first I was scared to learn it. This would be awesome on a Yamaha grand! I've been working on it since March 1st last year. But I learned most of the notes after like 7/8 months. I know it can still use some work, but I wanted to post it on his birthday!
@@JoelRossPiano Awesome! Note-wise it took me about a couple of weeks, but in those two weeks I practiced probably around 8 hours a day to develop the techniques and program the piece to my muscle memory. I've been polishing it for months and still haven't finished, probably won't for a long time. Very difficult to play this piece perfectly and to express everything. I guess you could say it's in "good" shape now but definitely not perfection. Anyways, great job again and good luck with this piece and future projects!
@@primeartonline-pianocovers1535 Cool, same to you! :D
Your hands are not properly placed... You could gain a lot of speed if you were placing them right

YES
Nothing to say but wow
This is really more exciting than some world class pianists’ interpretations.
When did you start playing piano and how long did it take to learn this - my favourite - piece?
Greetings from Frankfurt / Germany
Hey Dawid! Frist of all, thank you so much! Reading that made my day. I've been playing piano for 10 years now. And I have always wanted to play this Ballade, So I finally decided to go for it! It took me a year to learn. :D
Incredible job man! An impressive feat in learning this masterpiece. How long have you been playing piano and how did you approach this piece?Would you say that my 3 years experience (almost 4) is too short to begin? Thank and well done again!
Thank you so much John! I really appreciate it! I’ve been playing for 10 years. And it took me around a year to learn this. I always wanted to play Ballade 1, so that kept me motivated to finish. It’s one of Chopin’s best! Well kind of depends on your current repertoire. If you feel ready I say go for it! 🎶
@@JoelRossPiano awesome job man! Keep up the work then and keep refining the ballade! All the best :)
Awesome job!! How long did this take you to learn? I've just started the piece and there are definitely some passages that look pretty intimidating but I'm determined to learn it because it is such a beautiful piece.
Thanks so much, Nicole! It took me around a year. It’s definitely worth learning! Keep it up! :)
Amazing job Joel!! This piece is really hard but you did a good job with it. I played it too, for a recital about a year ago. I suggest not using so much rubato though. There really isn’t a well established sense of tempo though the whole piece, I’m guessing you didn’t practice with a metronome? :p and some of the rhythms are off. But you have the right notes and emotionally very good. Phrasing is nice too, and so is articulation. I suggest working on voicing too, but if you nail the rhythm (COUNT!!) throughout the piece and use a metronome while practicing it has the potential to be an outstanding interpretation with your technique skills.
Thanks a lot, Aakash!! Yeah, I can go crazy on the rubato...I just get into it and makes it more exciting to play! But I'll work on it. ;D
Joel Ross I had the same problem, until I met my current teacher :) if you actually notice really good pianist playing (for this piece, Zimerman is who I prefer) the music always keeps going... there is a steady sense of tempo and you can always tell when they use rubato, and that’s what makes those few moments where they do so special. When there’s no sense of tempo established and the music doesn’t keep going the fast parts sound slow (even if you play them really fast) and the slow parts sound sloppy.
I constantly have to work on this myself. Counting is hard but it makes me a better pianist so I’ll keep doing it, and I hope you do the same :p
@@purelypiano7493 Yeah cool
