This is very moving. It's a real testimony to you, and your solidarity. I remember seeing you as a teenager playing a solo gig in Berkhamsted and playing 'Jasper Songbird/Spoonfull', the shimmering tones and harmonics created a kind of other-worldy atmosphere. I also remember going to the gig with Chesham folk club supporters who joined in with you on 'Leave her Johnny Leave Her'. That was one of the first experiences of what I would call a true, 'English folk' sound and is forever etched in my memory. Keep on being real and true.

Very moving story and a beautiful rendition. I saw Roy many times , he too told wonderful stories in the build up to his sings, he had a very rich ‘timbre’ to his voice , making him always a pleasure to listen to.

I’m very grateful to Springwatch, as without their Unsprung programme a few years ago I don’t think I’d of heard of Martin Simpson and his amazing music.

See my comment on Martin's 'Ken Small'. As I told, I saw Martin doing this story/ song in Oisterwijk, southern Netherlands. Now, this story moved me into tears again, because my brother death in august. It's 'never enough' but this song is enough, more than enough, to comfort me. This is the real folk music, like it was, and I hope, ever will be!! If we learned to want less and love more, .....there's more than enough for us all' What a comfort. Zie lyrics onder good'un hieronder.

Beautiful story Martin... I think Roy sang from his spiritual realm - after all, the guitar is our connection to our transcendental state... is it not?

"There's always the money for missiles and tanks, there's always the money for generals and banks, There's always the money for new ways to kill, but a limited budget for you when you're ill, Yes there's always enough for a war, but there's never enough for the poor....
There's always the money for tunnels and roads, for opera and ballet, but what about homes? For MP's expenses and fat subsidies, but there's never the money for nurseries, and the well-off they always take more, so there's never enough for the poor.....
There's always the money for tests they can pass, they will fail you for not being white middle class, there's always the goodies for those with most greed, so there's never enough for those in most need... there's a pay raise if you're on the Board, but there's never enough for the poor......
Consider how little of life that we know, we bring nothing, take nothing, pass through and go, we are all of us poor when it comes to the night, in need of the darkness and in need of the light, if we'd learn to want less and love more, there'd be enough for the poor, for there's more than enough for us all"
Transcribed by ear from how Roy Bailey sang it because I couldn't find the lyrics online, except for a gospel song with the same name.
