    russian viever here!
these ladies were national sweethearts. in order to go to eurovision we used to have a system, where you apply first, then the big heads of national tv, producers etc select few people and then we had our own tv-vote. whoever won the tv vote gets to go and represent russia. babushki won over one of our previous contestants and our winner from 2008 who also applied that year. the whole thing was more of a fundraiser for them to rebuild a local church (which was originally from 1865 and got wrecked during soviet times) and an attempt to bring attention to small rural communities (in buranovo, where they come from, there are 640 people or something).
people loved them, they were sweet, charming and absolutely shocked by all the attention and travelling and big audiences which i think also helped.
note on their origin: they are just a local choir\group, it was organized by one of the ladies. just something to do together, sing and talk and have a small community.
babushki is indeed plural for babushka (grandma). babushka is also widely used as something to call an older woman. it's considered to be kind and polite \ respectful. for example, if you see an older woman who needs help on the street, you would probably come up to her and say 'babushka, do you need help' or something like that. (now that i think about it, you probably wont even ask, just say 'babushka, let me help') same goes for dedushka (grandpa)actually!
they represented babuskas beautifully! they are wearing traditional clothes (important note, since russia is multicultural there is no one specific traditional dress for all of russian people, it varies depending on the region).
babushka in russia is someone incredibly kind, helpful, who loves to cook and care for the family. i would also argue that in many-many russian families women are the rulers of the family and so babushka would be considered as someone very important to all family decisions (for example, im 27 and i beg my babushka to throw away an old piano that doesn't work since the 80s, but she vetoes that decision all the time). another thing is that a lot of kids are raised by or in close contact with their babushka. your babushka is your rock, she's always on your side. another example, i live with my babushka (she's my mom's grandmother), but my grandmother from my dad's side hates me, doesnt even want to be called babushka, she's always just elena. and my wonderful nana always calls her crazy for that, she says that to be a babushka is an honor, to live long and to see your grandkids and to care for your family is the most important thing. and it should be shameful to shy away from that because it's a greatest gift.
last note; obviously it's not the same for all families (some babushkas are quite modern, some don't fit the stereotype at all) but the general sense of babushka is here. it's warmth and comfort, food and smiles.
thanks for the video, guys! keep the eurovision stuff coming:)

At the time, i started out really hating this, but by the time the ESC finals came round, i was bowled over by their charm!
The ladies came from a very small Udmurtian region which encapsulates finnish culture also.
If i remember rightly, they entered the Eurovision to bring their plight to the masses. They needed to fix the roof of their little church, which would have been very expensive and out of their reach, so the goal was to raise awareness. As i believe, they ended up managing to do it after Eurovision, fulfilling their goal, all the while doing something that a Babushka (like them, from a remote village in Russia) would never even dreamed of doing!
The smallest old lady in the centre mustve really been thrown out of her comfort zone because in her sunset years, she performed on a stage watched by hundreds of millions of people, achieved her goal of fixing the church roof (thus leaving a legacy for future Udmurtian villagers) AND she also used her new found fame to find her fathers grave, who she never saw again after he went to war in 1942. She fulfilled her destiny of reuniting her mother and father, by taking a handful of soil from her mothers grave to her fathers resting place, and vice versa.
She passed away in October 2019, and her wholesome story remains one of my favourites from Eurovision!

Also, was Ruslana referenced? How about the piano on fire and the on stage skater...I need to watch it again. In short, maybe there needs to be a preparatory list before we show them Peace...

Coins on the neck is monisto - traditional finno-ugric necklace (not russian!). Traditionally is made from silver coins, passed over generations of women in the family, and is believed to protect a woman who wears it (from bad luck, or bad health).
And clothing are very traditional ethnic robes. And that is unique, because "entitled" nation (russian) is often considered superior, and it takes effort to preserve original culture of a small ethnic group. I would compare it to american indian tribes in some regard.

No, USA isn't welcome to participate in Eurovision. Country outside the EBU broadcasting network needs an invite, like Australia got.

      Nope, you're wrong.
A country CAN enter Eurovision, but they HAVE to be a part of the Eurovision Broadcasting Union, of which quite a few non-European countries are. Israel, Australia, Morocco, Egypt, Libya etc.....even the UK are no longer a European country, but they have the EBU licence.

Australia was invited by EBU in 2015 to join. Apparently there are part members of some sort, like Australia and the U.S. too it seems.

Welcome to Eurovision! You will be speechless many more times. 😂
Celine Dion also participated in Eurovision, so there is hope for you two as individuals, but to be honest, the Europeans wouldn’t allow the US to enter Eurovision, but you can represent another country!
Also, the reason why Australia is in Eurovision is that Australia has a large number of descendants of Europeans (like the US, lol) but besides that they follow Eurovision religiously.
There is also Israel, although it is not a European country, Israel is home to the majority of European Jews.

wooden doll that has other dolls inside of it (stacking dolls) is called matryoshka

I think they are perfect in their ethnic singing, would be perfect if russia let them sing authenticly. But this try in modern music ruined everything. Because russia is a sign of bad taste
