  • Here's Meryl Streep talking, at the London Press Conference for the new film The Post, about playing her character Katherine Graham - the publisher of The Washington Post.
The film stars Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson, Bradley Whitford, Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, Bob Odenkirk and many more.
The Post depicts the journalists from The Washington Post and The New York Times who published the Pentagon Papers regarding the covert involvement of the United States government during the Vietnam War. The film centres around the cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country's first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between journalist and government. Critics have compared the depicted government of Richard Nixon with that of Donald Trump.
The Post is released in UK cinemas January 19

"There were no women reporters." This shows how far ahead of her time Eleanor Roosevelt was, who insisted on holding press conferences only for women reporters, in the 1930s.

Katharine Graham describes in her memoir that since Newsweek had been acquired by the Post Company, it had mostly male reporters and that eventually several women sued the company for discrimination. It was an era of consciousness raising for everyone!
