Cargo Ship Issued Mayday Call Before Hitting Maryland Bridge

  • The 95,000-ton container ship reportedly lost power and propulsion before accidentally veering into a pillar, triggering the collapse of Maryland’s Francis Scott Keys bridge. Dramatic video of the disaster shows the ship losing power for 30 seconds as it drifts toward the bridge. When power is restored it was too late to prevent the disaster. Maryland Governor Wes Moore says a mayday call from the container ship just before the impact alerted cops to halt traffic heading across the doomed bridge.

@user-qv6wp9dx7b I'm pretty sure they meant they were able to stop people from driving onto the bridge quickly after it fell, preventing potentially dangerous circumstances on the remaining bridge
Edit: I was wrong, they did know ahead of time but just barely. There was a video that had the recording of the cops radios. They were in the process of trying to figure out how to get the crew off the bridge when it collapsed 💔

Looking at another article on the timeline, it looks like the first call was to the Coast Guard roughly a minute after crews determined they couldn't get the ship's powered restored. Emergency teams began receiving 911 calls at 01:30.[3] The Baltimore Police Department was alerted to the collapse at 01:35. Large-scale rescue and recovery efforts were initiated.[30] The United States Coast Guard deployed boats and a helicopter as part of rescue efforts.

It was a continuous through truss bridge, the third longest such in the world. The entire thing is held up by pulling force between its parts, tension, like tug of war. When a massive part of it collapsed on impact it either pulled the rest down with it, or left it without a counter-force to promptly pull itself down the other way.
They cost an order of magnitude or two less because they're very material efficient, and can cover longer distances than an arch or beam bridge. It was built 50 years ago, I doubt we had the engineering experience or industry to build any other kind of bridge to such a size, and even if we did it would be ruinously expensive even today.

I have been monitoring the weather in this area due to our current operations in the area and the wind has been 20-30 knots from the north, right on the ship's beam. @Ms_chae6 Yes, but common sense dictates that when traveling between two obstacles, you stay as close to the middle as you can. The power was off for approximately 30 seconds, so that’s a 30 seconds to change the trajectory of a massive cargo ship. Even before losing power, they were still drifting way too close to the pillar. So either the ship was malfunctioning long before that, this was intentional, or someone wasn’t paying attention.
