Love the celebration at the end. Kournikova definitely had talent, people always thought she was just a pretty face. Girl could hit the ball. Venus wore her down here though. She couldn't hang in that Miami heat.

Venus really did lack that killer instinct in the earlier years. I recall being constantly frustrated with her back then, as she was just way too defensive sometimes, considering her physical capabilities. Matches dragging for far longer than one would think.

Yes!!! I thought I was the only one who saw that back then. Her game changes a lil after Serena won the U.S Open.

@@bklynfinesse8709 Yes, after Serena won the US Open it woke her up. She knew must compete better. Venus was suppose to win a grand slam first but Serena won first. I think Venus felt some way and their mother said that it was Serena who showed her how to win

Venus was agressive soon in her career (from her 1st professional match actually), even in this match. (Don’t forget this video of those matches slows so much the real speed and power).
I admit she hit regularly the ball quite high with her forehands but it secured a lot her shots and she was able to contain her incredible power, and it allowed her to hit such a heavy ball.

@@cedrichapman I understand your point but aif you look at Venus old videos you can see she didn't have the Confidence nor fighting Spirit.
Watch a her face expression after Serena win and she did that interview about being a professional tennis player coming to win. All that came after. Look at her interviews b4 Serena win

@@bklynfinesse8709 totally agree. Venus just didn't seem to be as resolute as Serena was; she was confident in herself but she also seemed way too hesitant and reliant on her superior footspeed and court coverage to get her out of trouble. Of course, the errors in her game have been a perennial challenge too, but she got progressively better, as she adjusted her forehand technique in particular.
One wonders what would have happened if she embraced the net much earlier in her career. I dont think her head to head record against the likes of Davenport or Hingis or even Sharapova, would have been as close.
Lastly, Venus has said this herself: Serena taught her to have heart, to win, to compete. I cant help wondering - with VW being (in my opinion) the most athletically gifted female player ever to pick up a racket, what could have been. That said, she had a stellar career still, amongst the best of the very best. And of course, her brightest star shone in her philanthropic work, her leadership mettle, her stoicism and on court decorum - very admirable and a role model. To me, she stands head and shoulders above anyone. Peerless.

Venus is my player but Kournikova… maybe one the more talented player of all time. The quality of her shots was unbelievable.

Interesting Ana Kournikova never won a title in her career. Sometimes people don't give Venus enough credit she was only 17 years old around this time her game wasn't developed yet and was a top 5 player at 17-18 years old.

Kournikova was playing so beautifully the first set. I think she just became more passive with those two-handed slices and Vee settled in towards the end.
