      It’s amazing how many of the new dawn of power players had this shot as one of their weapons. Venus, Davenport, Serena, Seles, Hingis, Clijsters could give players fits with it. Later, Sharapova and Azarenka and Wozniacki had excellent ones. It actually seems to be less common today. Jabeur sometimes pulls one out of nowhere.

Interesting Capriati never beat Venus (0-4 I think), but Jennifer challenged Serena quite a bit on the biggest stages. Never will there be another Venus Ebony Star Williams!! Venus was/is my all time favorite tennis player Period! My heart would thump in my chest as I watched her play at her best. Never really cared for Serena, Venus was/is my favorite. I loved the way her ball traveled in the air..it seemed to penatrate the air differently than the other women, and men too. Many players would say that about her shots. I loved her " in your face" style of tennis! And her professionalism and maturity she demonstrated after defeat ( Something Serena has never been good at). This was a very good match! Capriatti was a beast too..loved her victory over Hingis in the Australian finals.. .you had to beat Jennifer. She was a very solid and talented all court player. What do you mean by “battle of the nerves?” Venus was sick during this tournament. You can see her coughing at times in this video. She’s never lost to Capriati in her career. Although they had a couple of tight sets that summer, you can see Venus was getting progressively better as she figured out Capriati’s game. Venus won Wimbledon that year where she was defending champion. While it’s possible that she could be nervous about the prospect of an all Williams final, she played this match pretty much the same as she played previous matches leading up to this-minus a few hiccups at the start, which could more likely be attributed to her being sick.

    This was Venus at her greatest. It's a pity she had some of those illnesses and injuries so I forget how amazing she was in 2001. Even today that play would be #1. Just thrilling to watch. Let's remember - Capriati was peaking here too and was known as one of the greatest strikers of the ball ever and Venus CONSISTENTLY OUTHIT HER not just getting to the ball - her technique was impeccable in this run. I hate Capriati but she was playing fantastically well that year too and Venus and her were in a showdown for who was #1. I think only at one of those later Wimbledons maybe 2005 or 2007 did Venus fully regain her peak form. One Wimbledon she served Sampras like stats (115 mph 1st 95 mph second) against Sharapova.

    • @brenchengbrencheng4794
      @brenchengbrencheng4794 Před rokem

      It was in 2007 where she met Sharapova. But Venus was even better that next year, when she won her last GRAND SLAM SINGLES TITLE so far(i find it hard to believe there will be more slams coming at her age but we never know!). In Wimbledon 2008, she won all her matches in straight sets including the final match against Serena. She was serving even harder than that previous year on average, because I was paying attention closely at the time between those years in 2007 -2009 when I started to see the very big gap difference in terms of Venus average first serve speed against anyone else's on the tour with only Serena that managed to come close but Venus was always the one who serve the hardest. And that 08 wimbledon year was an outstanding performance from her, I could still remember how hard and intimidating those groundstrokes that came from Venus both wings were,including her 1st and 2nd serves..she was serving on average at the maximum speed of 128mph(the previous year she hit 129mph the fastest serve i think, but on average number she was more consistent and proficient at delivering her serve in 2008). Her peak of the speed of serve on average 115mph or 117mph. I think it was the former one but what i do remember correctly was she serve at the highest on average serve speed against Dementieva in her SF match. Coming into the final she still serve really big and powerful, but it was a lot slower at 111mph on average. As of today, I have never seen any other women serving their first serve way faster on average in a match than her last three showing at the 2008 wimbledon QF,SF and Final. The only two players after those years until recently, whom I would identify were able to match closely with the average speed of her serve(1st serve) were Naomi Osaka in 2018 2021 and Serena Williams in many of her matches during those prime years in 2009 2010 2012 2013 and 2015. Their average top serve speed range between 112mph-114mph the most but never supassed the 115mph mark on average first serve. Plus Osaka hit a very low first serve too at around 50%-55% so her serve is harder as she serve for power and less placement.Serena on the other hand handles both power and placement very well while Venus is more stronger with her 1st serve. Also, she could hit her 2nd serve way much harder than we used to see regularly which is seen around 80mph-85mph. That Wimbledon 2008 tournament was the best ive ever seen her serving overall, her 2nd serve was delivered quicker than most of the current women's wta first serve on the tour, she hit about 90mph-97mph second serve on average and she was producing 2nd serve aces sometimes. Her forehand was like a thunderous lightning that strikes from the sky, and eventhough many believed her BH is her bigger weapon and more consistent wing of the two, that maybe true in general except this tournament because her Forehand was looking sharp and fearless at those big moments too. I believe that 2008 Wimbledon final was Venus at her peak, just my opinion. I agree with the high level performance of her winning the Wimbledon in 2007, but if i compare that one with the next year's performance from her, 2008 was her strongest form.

      It was a great day for Venus and her champion's composure with the supremacist crowd willing themselves to believe balls that were clearly in weren't, booing, shouting, even screaming during points; Capriati repeatedly encouraging them by playing the victim, then staring Venus down as if she's supposed to serve at her prefered pace.

    • @leonidesrivera9812
      @leonidesrivera9812 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@cjasewell Yes, that’s what spectators do, either boo or cheer for the players. So by your logic, if one of the players gets booed then it has to be race related? It happens all the time in sports. How do you determine whether it’s just preference or race related? None of the players is entitled cheers nor is the crowd obligated to cheer for both or one or any. So if they are both Black or both White? When the crowd boos one? what then?
      Also, there were many line balls from Venus because she hits deep into the opponent’s court consistently. When that happens most of the spectators cannot see what we see. We have a top view, players have the best view and the chair umpire has the second best view. Venus had a lot of paint balls (ball on line) which is in. It looks out to spectators because our eyes cannot keep up with the speed at the moment of contact or angle sitting at court side. Having played tennis for many years close matches like these the crowd will turn on the chair umpire before turning on a player, especially if they don’t overrule or get involved somehow to call out or redo the points. At least look into it. They were booing the “chair” and showing their disapproval. New Yorkers US Open fans are the most boisterous of all of the major slams and if you follow tennis this type of crowd behavior is normal. It’s presumptuous to think this was an obvious race issue. The US Open crowd, New Yorkers, also have a history of flopping back and forth between players typically in favor of the losing side or player, the “under dog”. This was Capriati. Crowds reaction is normal behavior and what makes the experience that much more interesting and entertaining
      at the Open. This was a great match with two great American Players battling it out, playing phenomenal tennis. Obviously the best player won 🙂

    capriati obviously would have fared better slicing her backhand, not giving venus any angles to work with my hitting down the middle and more topspin as well... looks like capriati figured that 1) she could out hit venus so no need to change the pace or use any variety or 2) that eventually venus would start making more errors than winners, which sometimes does happen, but not in this match...

      She made 46 UE in this match. But when you play a Williams,not only rely on their errors,attack them as well.

    Could this Venus challenge Naomi Osaka?

    • @jokosantoso8946
      @jokosantoso8946 Před 2 lety +8

      Challenge? No. She would obliterate Osaka. Venus at the height of her career was the greatest athlete ever in women tennis. Osaka herself is sublime athlete, but she is not at the same level of athleticism of Venus.

    • @doksh5740
      @doksh5740 Před 2 lety +6

      Of course, Osaka is great, but the Williams sisters would eat her up when they play well.

      That question would be an insult to Venus.

  • @iamshadowbanned699

    You're not going to beat Venus trying to outhit her from the baseline. Jennifer doesn't have enough power to do that instead, she should have played a more conservative and patient game to try to lure her into errors.
