The Hindu ritual box actual is a make-up box. The parts are filled with powdered vibrant colours and there is some screw in the middle to seal it shut. I have an original one as a souvenir from India sitting on my bookshelf.

No it isn't a potato masher. It is used to cut butter into the flour when making pastry crusts for pies. I guess you could use it as a masher but it would not be nearly as effective as an actual potato masher.

When making pastry, you need to cut the shortening into the flour so that it ends up in pea-sized pieces. You'd actually need 2 knives for that. A pastry cutter can be used with one hand and does a better job.
