Gotta admire that honesty. I work construction/remodeling myself, and when working on my own house I pulled all the cables and installed all switch/socket/junction boxes myself. Everything else I left to a sparky I know and trust, because I dont want there to be any risks of electric hazards in the house for my wife and kids.

The loop in these newer switches are to eliminate time spent working above yourself i.e on stepladders and scaffolding for example fitting multiple lights . Think about it .. if you run all your permanent lives to your switches , then you’re doing most of your work off the floor at a safe and comfortable working height and doing it a lot faster to . 👍

I had a call out a few weeks ago at night for a domestic property for a housing association with no lights, the tenant said the mcb was tripping after a minute, they had down lights installed in the ceiling in a wooden pelmet under the ceiling centre so lowered from the original ceiling which ran the full length of the rooms and around the outside of the rooms with boxing with no access to the original pendants also the tenant didn't know where the original pendants were.
Metal switch plates with cpc's cut off at the switches.
Original 2 way switch strappers diverted so no longer a 2 way but to operate centre ceiling and outer edge lights separately which had been apparently installed by an electrician they had got privately and certified.
Junction box somewhere in the kitchen ceiling with no access above as there was a single cable at the switch and pendant.
I was there a couple of hours never did find the fault as there were several down lights to investigate at gone 10.00pm.
Housing association has told the tenant they need to get their own electrician in at their own expense as the original wiring and light fittings had been altered.

      @@Walsh30303
An extra leg that isnt needed so saving time and money on installation and testing,
You say testing doesn't increase time, you have to do all the ring final tests, then cross connecting of L+N and test each socket, then cross connect L+E and test each socket for R1+R2. Times by 3 for most properties and its much more time consuming than radial testing !
If theres a broken ring its going to possibly overload cables without knowing about it until (maybe) one day theres an EICR done. With Radials if theres a fault the rest of the circuit doesnt work and its more likely to get repaired properly. Then you get the DIYers adding spurs, on top of spurs, on top of spurs leading to dangerous overloaded cable conditions. With radials those dangerous conditions cannot occur
As someone carrying out EICRs every day on Council properties the amount of broken rings and DIY disasters I come across is unbelievable.

There's no such thing as "a Part P".
Part P of the building regulations states that all work must be done by a "competent person" but does not define what a "competent person" is.
Those who are registered with organisations such as NICEIC can self-certify their own work, anyone else is supposed to get their work certified by the local authority's building control or an authorised third-party certifier.
However only two sorts of work: installing a consumer unit or installing a "new circuit", need to be notified to building control, so in practice for anything else is a matter for the individual to decide whether they are "competent" or not.
As others have said, though, if you do your own work and someone gets hurt because of your lack of competence you could be in serious hot water.

As an American, these switches blow my mind. Seems way more complicated than it needs to be.

red and black is over 30 years old and is past manufacturers use by date you cannot safety check that cable as it should not be in use..the only legal way is to suggest a rewire its no different to connecting to a old fuze box you become liable for the work you've done

Nothing wrong with red and black so long as it's in good condition and is not sweating green goo.

@@barrieshepherd7694 trust me not all wire is bright when stripped...it takes a simple kink to make a hot spot normally hidden in the wall causes failure in the PVC any moisture surrounding the cable will create copper oxide the green colour you're chatting about

@@jayday4879 Nope not talking about verdigris. I'm talking about the breakdown of the PVC caused by manufacturing issues with plasticisers in the late 60's early 70's. Calling for a complete re-wire just because the cables are red/black is, to my mind, work generation of the worst kind and gets electricians bad names - just as it does requiring a board change to metal when there is no other work to do.

      @jayday4879 Před 3 lety

@@barrieshepherd7694 I don't think it has anything to do with generating work it's purely because of fire issues most houses with red and black have internal walls made of Kindle and tinder wood covered in a lime plaster with a cavity so your house could be completely alight without you even knowing it..the only way I can explain it's like a can of gas .gas don't go out of date so why has it got a shelf life ..because the container rots same with cable

    • @barrieshepherd7694

@@jayday4879 We will have to disagree then - I'm under the impression that most properties, built in the 60/70s, had solid internal walls so the concept that some mysterious overheating can cause a fire in an unknown location stretches' my imagination somewhat. If the old cable is in good condition, and passes insulation tests, why on earth do you think it will suddenly burst into flames because it is the wrong colour? You will be telling me that I need to re-wire because I MUST have surge arrestors to be legal - surges that my property, with underground supply cabling, has successfully managed to escape for the last 40 years. Fortunately many of the sparkies I see on CZcams are happy to install new boards without ripping out red and black so I guess there are some honourable sparkles out there.

Well, remember in the late 1980's, when the trades made a very very decent packet down the south east? So much so, there was Harry Enfield on the TV with his character loads of money, well, the ruling elite and political class had to sort that out, so a few years later, the Eastern Europeans came along, polish etc, then a few decades later the world, in the West Midlands there were two English speaking guys at the top that was a Engineer and a supervisor, the rest were from Ukraine, a few Latvians and a guy from Portugal, that did the underpasses in Birmingham, this was awhile ago, but shows you the big boys could simply import muscle in, now brexit is here, let's see what happens, as far as the electrics are concerned , part P is a way to give a ticket to people to do the job, making the price drop, I know of people on the dole, that still do electrical work, cash in hand, been reported, get a slap on the wrist and business as usual, there is a whole undercover market, that and dodgy boxes of cigs, it's the wild west, want a eicr 100, site unseen, not sure how they get away with it, but I know afew stories and I am not giving anyone the hack, well, I shall work for a living, pay my tax, yet grumble under my breath, lol,
