Electric classic Porsche 912 - Test Drive

- It's time to take out the electric Porsche 912 out onto the mountain roads of Wales for a proper shake down. Similar to the Porsche 911 conversions we do, this has a Tesla motor in the rear and battery pack split between a front and rear pack to optimise the weight distribution and therefore improve the handling.
Is there a better total package EV than this? Looks, handling, practicality, etc - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I'll never tire of seeing these classic cars not only returning to the roads but doing so with modern, reliable performance.
Thanks 👍😀
whatever you do,,, don't let Richard Hammond get ahold of that car,,,, it'll never be the same !
Reliable? Those tesla motors are notorious for failures. The dude that made 2 million kilometers on his tesla got his electric engine replaced 14 times. 14. That's way worse than engines from the era this Porsche was from. That being said this car is quite a bit less weight and the engine is supposedly turned down a bit so it should last longer.
I couldn’t disagree more! This is SO wrong. Keep the classics classic. Do it to other cars, but leave the ones with the most iconic engine noise & feel alone. This is like getting your beloved dog stuffed when it’s dead. Morbid and just tasteless
@@mortenberg2897 That's absurd. First of all it's nothing like having a beloved pet stuffed. Cars are still inanimate objects no matter how passionate we are about them.
Second, leaving them dirty, noisy, and falling apart, or not running at all is the true tragedy.
I love everything about cars and their history, including the sound of a well tuned engine, but it is that passion for cars and all modes of transportation that keeps me from being a blind, closed-minded purist.
Engine sounds and shifting gears are not what make the driving experience so addicting and satisfying, it's the feeling of pushing the vehicle and oneself to the limit and coming out the other side knowing both a little better.
We need to move beyond internal combustion, which peaked decades ago, and embrace the future. It would be a terrible loss to leave all these classic cars behind when we finally gain the enlightenment and discipline to stop polluting our world and ourselves. I for one would much rather see them still on the road as they were meant to be.
10:54 That left-hand grill can't cope with the new improved power and handling upgrade. 😮
At their core, electric cars are just a computerized battery that drives electric motors. That core can be built as a simple skateboard, a flat platform upon which any style of automobile body can be bolted. So, I want to see Porsche, BMW, and other manufacturers who built cars that are absolute works of art, bring back those classic designs! Imagine the beauty, class, and functionality of a BMW 2002 body and interior melded with a purpose built, EV/battery chassis!
Would love to see a Mercedes 280 Pagoda converted
It deserves ls engine
i'd love to see a MGB GT AND Lotus Elan converted
Citroen SM. Converted to right hand drive. Converted to rear wheel drive with a Tesla motor. Use electric motor to power hydraulics
That or a citroen DS23 or perhaps a ds pallas convertible. Any of these would be awesome to see!
Ha ha, I just noticed this comment after suggesting the same!
I’d love to see a 924 recreated with the performance and interior it deserved
Good idea. Did you see the 944 we did? czcams.com/video/SRU3jmCmGrs/video.htmlsi=gAasJ08ObxjdvN8e
What a beauty! Another banger of a car to convert would be the 1970 Citroen DS, with the hydropneumatic suspension, the directional headlights and a Tesla powertrain... my dream car.
Good choice 👍
You've bought a drone! Beautiful car, beautiful countryside - makes me proud to be Welsh.
Diolch 👍🏴
I was considering typing almost the same comment, except that I am Normand! So I concur, thank you ECC for sharing, I love what you do.
I love my Tesla, but THIS is what really excites me with EVs! Thank you for sharing this wonderful 912!
Your attention to detail and OEM-like engineering is superb. I have been a “Watt Rodder”for many years in California and hope to visit your beautiful countryside and shop someday. .
Thanks. Look forward to seeing you. 👍😀
Thanks 👍
@11:28 what other cars I think would be great for conversion to electricity?
Classic cars with beautiful design but technically insignificant or downright unreliable engines.
Something that would actually be more fun to own in electric form as it is with an ICE because it's now worry free and more powerful.
Citroën DS, obviously, they didn't name it goddess for nothing. Even if that means removing the adjustable ride height.
DeLorean, extremely cool, extremely slow.
BMW E60 M5, not particularly beautiful but certainly could use an injection of reliability.
Volvo P1800, just a beautiful car.
Toyota 2000GT, the most beautiful Japanese car.
Mazda RX7 FD, the second most beautiful Japanese car. Despite being very interesting the wankel engines are also a nightmare for maintenance.
Mercedes W123, certainly not badly built. I love the estate version and color-coded hub caps. There's also a coupé and a long-wheelbase version.
Chevrolet Corvair/Lakewood, just gorgeous cars. Simple engines, but also 60 years old.
Ferrari Dino 308 or Mondial. That would piss off a lot of purists. Think of the publicity.
Any Saab before ~1990. Just an iconic shape.
Anything Fiat or Alfa. If you want cars with pretty designs and bad engines Italy is the place to go.
Some good suggestions there. The Delorean we converted was definitely better once it was powered by electrons. 😎👍
I love the little history lesson in the beginning before you started talking about the electric conversion. Very informative and always impressive! Great video fellas!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cheers 👍😀
Awesome work guys any chance of being back on track tv and seeing full episodes. Keep up the amazing work 🙌🙌
My dream would be to have an early 70's Citroen DS-21 or 23 wagon converted to electric. Electric power would be perfect for the DS.
I'd love to see a Citroen GS done. Light, aerodynamic, hydrodynamic suspension, practical interior... And you wouldn't see yourself coming and going ;)
You do such a great job on these cars, your attention to detail is amazing. When I win the lottery I'll give you a call!
Aston Martin Lagonda with Tesla electronics
My compliments to the Chef!
Love the turbine-like whistle of this 912. I would think that a Stratos would be an absolute hoot with a full fat LDU
Stratos. Now we’re talking. I doubt anyone can better that suggestion. 👍👍👍
My first Porsche was a 912. Loved it.
I would love to see an electric A110.
That would be awesome. 👍
I'd love to see you convert an RX8. Many would argue its engine (and fuel consumption) was its weakest bit, so it would be ideal. :) I guess I'll have to wait 5 years for it to qualify as a classic... :(
Bring on the 997 conversions !!!
Any earlier year Z/Fairlady. If some of battery pack could be in back, the build could end up with near 50/50 weight distribution in addition to a bit more power. Thank you for showing off the exceptional 912!
Too bad Nissan made rust-buckets in that era. Had a 280Z until New England road salt took it.
An old Jag saloon would be a good conversion. A lovely smooth ride in peace and quiet surrounded by leather and walnut.
You guys are amazing!
Thanks 👍😀
What a beauty! A real work of art there.
Of course, the 914 is still #1. Mid-engine (better balance) wins in every way.
Still, this is a very, very pretty example of the slightly inferior rear-engine variant.
What a dream job you have. 🙂
Couldn't agree more!
Great looking car now it’s complete and running .The blue really makes it stand out.A Alpine A310 with the max power of a Tesla motor would be a great set up 👍
Cracking Porsche 912 EV
Rover SD1 seems quite obvious too. Great futuristic looks and internal electronics waiting to be ripped out.
I just had my ‘64 VW Bug with electric conversion delivered from my Texas house to our California house. As the transport driver was driving it from where he had to park his huge 8 vehicle trailer, he drag raced a hot rod pickup and beat the pickup. He said the Bug was really fun to drive.
Bravo! That Porsche is functional art; it’ll turn heads everywhere it goes! Amazing work!
Couldn't agree more!
I love how that is described as blue sky!
It’s as blue as it gets here in Wales in January. 😆☀️😉👍
It would be great to see a Porsche 928 GT conversion.
The production quality of this video is astounding! Everything about this video is top notch. The Welsh country side...and that beautiful blue Porsche 912...is icing on the cake!
Out of many great videos you've produced, this IMO, is your best one yet. Fabulous job guys!

I love not only WHAT you are doing at Electric Classic Cars, but HOW you go about converting Classic Cars. You never destroy anything of the original when designing the conversion for a Classic Car.
------
*Being part Welsh makes Electric Classic Cars a little more special to me.
Thanks for your kind words. 👍👍😀😀😎🏴
Thanks 👍👍👍
I passed you by Hafren hideaway coming away from the forest, we were going towards it.
It wasn’t a car we see there very often hence why I remembered it, and I’m a long time lover of the 911 shape 😄
Well spotted 👍😀
I guess a lot ICE fanboys hate You, but I love this content. Great job converting these cars to electric 👌
I’m a fan of these cars when the original engine is a complete bust. I’d rather take a car that’s in really good shape with a blown motor and resto-mod or in this case, electro-mod it.
Wonderful job as usual. Congrats!
Thank you very much!
That's some beautiful countryside and roads for driving through.
Sure is. 👍😀
BMW 650i with a Large Tesla motor. With its huge trunk and V8 engine bay as well as utilizing the back seat area, (I’ve never had anyone ride back there) you’d have room for 100 kilowatt of batteries and loads of luggage. If you make the kit I’ll buy it tomorrow! The normal HP is around 300 so 500HP from a Tesla drive unit would make it monstrous!! There’s even a convertible version, and the 645i. There are thousands of them here in America!
5th or 6th gen Civic I think would make an interesting conversion. Really efficient cars already.
[3:36] What a beautiful shot when you drive off as the drone films you.
Plenty more where that came from 👍😀
You two are classics full of information knowledge. Beautiful video 🎉
Thanks 👍😀
Ford MUSTANG first Generation (1964-1966).
By 1966 over a million Mustangs had sold. That's why there are still a lot of cars out there today (unfortunately not so many in GB) and maybe some of them are interested in an EV conversion like me.
Love the Welsh countryside!
Thanks. 👍😀
If you're looking for a vehicle for a conversion package, how about a Ural sidecar motorcycle. You could get good range by putting most of the battery on the sidecar which would improve handling.
Love the music and drone footage.
Thanks 👍😀
What a masterpiece! The roads of Wales seem made for this car! Perfect!
Been waiting for this one Richard. Does not disappoint. Fantastic work by all the team to produce this car. 👍🏴😎
Glad you enjoyed it
you guys are doing amazing work
Thanks 👍😀
Thanks 👍
Wonderful video guys, just in terms of cinematography and presentation, let alone the car. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words. The countryside does make it easier. 👍😀🏴🏴😎
Richard and Tim, you fellas have outdone yourselves with this beauty. Best channel on this platform.
Thanks for your kind words. 👍😀😎😎
@@spudproductions7606
I agree with Tim - #1 for me too!
You got that right 👍😀😎
This is wonderful. I would like to see french Citroen 2CV and Renault 4L converted. They'd be awesome city cars. Yes, you would die in a crash, but don't crash, and problem solved!
Drones come in handy to see around corners on such narrow roads 🙂
Good idea 😂
@@spudproductions7606 Where's that Audi BEV that had drones emerging from it to see up the road? 😁
My vote is for a Triumph Stag, open top motoring for 4 adults.
Thank You folks for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
fantastic build ❤
Thanks 👍😀
Magnificent work on the Porsche 912! Also, I’d like to see a 1971 Mercedes 280SL Pagoda, as in a previous. Cheers!
Hey Richard. Love your work 👍
Thanks 👍
What a perfect car! ❤ Thank you for sharing 🤘
Glad you like it!
The Citroen SM is begging to go electric.
Oh yes 👍👍
That makes three of us (at least) suggesting this in the comments!
This is my project. Grabbing a 912 and making it electric for my daily comutes (and for some trips). The hard part is finding a cheap 912 since even the rust buckets cost more than most new cars.
I remember when nobody wanted 912s and they were cheap as chips. Unfortunately those days are gone. 🙁👍
5:02 The eyebrows at the front and the smile at the back of this shot are priceless!
Great conversion and really nice drone shots! 👏👏👏😍😍😍
Thanks 👍👍😀😀😎
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the Porsche history lesson. Great conversation chaps, breathing new life into an old car... Any car like this would be cool ie an E-type...
A real nice looking classic.
When I started racing, some people were installing 215 wide wheels to their cars, but I used 165 wide wheels, because you really don't need a lot of wheel surface to go fast when the weight is mostly on rear. My personal opinion is that very wide or big wheels on a Porsche would look ridiculous and most likely wouldn't be even road legal without body modifications.
A car I would really like to see converted is the eminently practical 924 - 944 series. It was one of my favourites to drive. Low powered Porsches are so much fun as you can enjoy yourself without having to find a full race track. Prices haven’t gone through the roof.
We agree. Here’s a 944 we converted previously. A fabulous car and the handling was amazing. 😉👍 czcams.com/video/SRU3jmCmGrs/video.htmlsi=AguSfv3TrDkQPW0E
VW Squareback type 3. Such a practical vehicle I can’t believe I haven’t seen any converted to EV!
I always wanted a Notchback. 😎👌
Those Wales roads are like the roads in Tasmania Australia. Only room for one. 😅
I had an 1989 Metro Gta I loved that car. Love to see how that 70ish Horse power redressed MG Metro would be electrified! As near as I ever got to a Mini Cooper!
Beauty. I think a 240/280Z would be a cool conversion.
What a beautiful car.
Wales is beautiful! So is that Porsche in my favorite color! You and your team do such high quality work and to work up a kit for a Porsche is just brilliant. Always looking forward to the next video! Maybe I should have one of your kits installed in a Porsche of my own here in USA?🤔
Many thanks 👍😀
MG F or TF would be great, the engines had a reputation for head gasket failure too. Balanced handling mid engined and light. Please find one and convert it Moggy!
Beautiful
Beauty! roll on 200k subs guys!
Love it. Well done. I got my dad's 1986 m535i we had from new. Would love to one day look into a Ev conversion.
Facel Vega? Ford Comete? Citroen DS Pallas?
I would be interested to see if you guys can convert an FD3s RX7 to electric. 😎
The opening Commentary shows you how Romans Traversed Rivers. "Hey Moggy get over here we need you to to use your Wide Stance to get this rope to the other side of the Danube" "No worries Gov"
I smiled throughout this video! I'd gladly hand over my 944 for a conversion!
Have you seen the 944 we converted a few years back? czcams.com/video/SRU3jmCmGrs/video.htmlsi=gAasJ08ObxjdvN8e
@@ElectricClassicCars I did, 5 months ago. Mine is not an S but just as tight. Well done!
Just gorgeous, Richard....
Oh, and the car's pretty good lookin' too...!! 🤣
This may not be popular, but I'd love to see a conversion kit based around a 69-79 Ford F-150 and a similar one for the Chevrolet pickup of the same era. ✌
You've asked that final question before, and my answer is still the same. A Citroën DS - with swivelling headlights, if you want me to be picky, but any DS would do.
Good choice 😀👍
So nice! It looks so minty!
I tried an EV 912 in France. The conversions can be allowed on the roads there only if they correspond to the power of the original engine, so I guess it still has the better torque even though pure performance won't be higher.
The inside was so minimal for me that I felt I was inside a 911-shaped shell with just an electric motorisation and a steering wheel. I used to be carried in old cars as a kid, but I guess I got used to the comfort of nowadays' automobiles.
From a looks & interior perspective, my favourite models would be from the 80's-early 90's.
But for the "total package", my tastes would be a late C3 Corvette or a Countach LP500s.
Countach ❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic result and lovely drone shots. This is a personal thing but I agree with your point about managing the regen and never understood having different regen modes in modern cars, when I had my Model 3 I really enjoyed how predictable and intuitive it was to lift off and slow down, either for a bend or for an upcoming roundabout. I would still like to see a trick EV, something like a Rolls-Royce wedding car that people don't realise is EV. Maybe even have speakers for a gentle rumble. Reliable, quiet, smooth and easy to drive.
Badass you look like a couple of kids on a roller coaster ❤😂😂😂
It’s a tough job but someone has to do it 😂😂
Fiat panda 4x4.... just an idea, really love all the cars you make 😅
Wonderful
Amazing! Simply amazing!!!
Thanks a lot!
Lovely! Just superbly lovely! 🥰
Cheers guys she's fast
Great drone work Tim, what are you using?
Thanks. DJI mini pro 4. First proper outing so still lots to learn. 👍😀
Beautiful! Would be cool to see how the gauges have been retrofitted with battery and other EV info
Hello Moggie, we met at Shelsley Walsh several years ago. It would be good to hear about mileage and charging time for these conversions in these excellent demo videos, just a thought.
Sorry, I often forget to include the basics on some of these episodes. I think I mentioned range of 150-200 mile range in the episode. CCS rapid charging on our latest Porsche kits is now at 100kW. Can’t wait for more Shelsley Walsh fun this year. Roll on the summer. 😉👍
i'd love 2 see both a MGB GT AND a Lotus Elan from the early 1970's converted
I have two cars voor you, the 928 Porsche and the Lotus Eclat., very impressive work on the 912 ev, and good filming and editing.
Thanks. We will take the Lotus. 🤩
Perfect car for an electric conversion.
