Out of all fangames I've played I have to say Scarlet Curiosity is over all my favorite. Sure there are games that exceed it when it comes to combat, story or difficulty, but like you said, when it comes to pure visuals, music and satisfying gameplay I don't think there are any other fangames that realistically challenge this one. Not to say it is perfect by any means but I'd say atm it is the best overall quality 2hu fangame there is.

The Palace of Earth Spirit is the most beautiful stage in the game, its theme make it even more majestic

The stage is pretty but...it's too bad there's not a lot to do in it, unfortunately.

I was really delaying the moment of playing this game, for too long. Dang, you've sold me with that seemingly simple explanation.
    ...now where's my game?

Glad it made you want to pick it up!
Although, you made me remember that I should perhaps put the link to buy the game in the description of the video. 😀

The visuals of this game were absolutely phenomenal, could easily be compared to games with much bigger studios.
My biggest complaints of the game are the difficulty which is extremely easy with the only exceptions being ~2 ridiculous attacks from a couple of the bosses and that the character models are subpar and could have been much better as shown by the environmental designs.

      @Surnist  Před 3 lety +2

It's true that the difficulty isn't always there, but that's also the attract of this game. It doesn't ask for perfect reflexes. Though I agree it could definitely be a little more difficult because the bullet hell mode doesn't even help that much.
As for the character models, I've only noticed that with Remilia and Sakuya since those are the ones you really get to see up-close. Otherwise, seeing how far the camera is, it didn't really bother me that much. I guess they did that to save some time and resources.

Great review! I enjoyed the game myself, even though I think it's objectively pretty average. It gets pretty repetitive since the difficulty curve is very shallow and most of the moves you unlock as you level up aren't worth using (at least from my experience playing as Remilia) so you kinda just spam the same attacks the whole game.
I wouldn't mind how easy the game is if there was at least an incentive to do well but besides losing the slight EXP bonus you get from keeping a high combo if you get hit (which you can save if land a hit quickly enough anyway), the only punishment for playing poorly is losing money when you die in a game where pretty much everything in the shop is useless anyway.
The atmosphere and visuals really do help the game a lot, it just feels super nice to explore Gensokyo since the areas they chose are all pretty distinct visually.
But honestly, I prefer this game's predecessor, Youyou Kengeki Musou (aka Ephemeral Swordplay Reverie, and also known as "dat youmu game" for some reason??). It's much shorter (only like 2-3 hours) and there's no RPG mechanics either (there is a scoring system which upgrades your main combo up to 2 times but that's it), but I actually prefer not having to constantly open the menu for every piece of gear I find to see if it's better than what I have.
The pacing is a bit faster in general and there's multiple difficulties which actually make a pretty big difference, some of the later bosses can be quite tough on Hard. I also like the music more than in Scarlet Curiosity, the stage 2 theme in particular is amazing.
The game's kinda rough around the edges (though SC was also kinda buggy iirc) but it's just a really nice game to sit down with and play through in an afternoon, shame it didn't make it to Steam.

Well the game gets pretty repetitive after a certain point, but I only felt that during the labyrinth, as for the moves themselves, I tried to look around and find new usages for them, although I'll admit that since Remilia is pretty much a rushdown character...there are very little options that are actually worth it, for example projectiles don't cut it on her. Although I was playing with Sakuya at first, so maybe that's why I didn't feel it nearly as much. Since Sakuya's knives have a purpose since she doesn't have what I like to call the "head bonk".
It's true that the game should be a little more punishing, getting money is pretty easy and honestly, even though I've died plenty of times in the labyrinth, I still had enough to do whatever I needed afterwards but that's an issue of the game in general...it's pretty easy, even with difficulty modifiers.
As for "dat Youmu game", I've heard of it but never played it before, so I'll have to take your word for it. 😅

Game's too short, makes you want more.
I don't have PC, played it on PS4.

    • @Surnist

If you play with both Remilia and Sakuya, it can take up to 20 hours. Which...is not that long for some but for that kind of game, it felt alright for me.
I surely wouldn't complain if there was more to it though. 😄 One thing that I found weird is that you can only go to the Hakurei Shrine once, even after beating the game.
I just wanna chill with Reimu. 🙃

Nice and quick review. If you don't mind me asking, what are the names of the other 2 fangames you mentioned when talking about the visual design?

On the left, you've got Touhou: Rythmn Carnival and on the right, you've got Koumajou Densetsu.
But thanks for the feedback! :)
