    I had a Kindle Basic earlier and I absolutely loved the size and weight. I then upgraded to Paperwhite 2021. On paperwhite, I absolutely love the warm light. Not only at night, but also in the day, the warmlight makes it look so much more like a real paper page. But the size and weight are just too much. I have the official Amazon case on, and I can't hold it comfortable for more than a few minutes. I wish they release a Basic+Warmlight sometime đŸ€ž

    I feel the indented screen is actually an advantage as it acts like an extra protection if you put the kindle face down.

      Also the Kindle 11 text is "closer" to your eyes, Paperwhite screen is not really flush. There is just extra layer of plastic over it. (you can tell because it cast shadow over the edges)

    The warm light was the defining factor for me. My eyes are hella sensitive to blue light so warmer screens are a must rather than an option. Also, the larger screen is a big deal too, reading this at night feels better than reading a physical book IMO.

    I have owned the 2018 PW 4 that has a six inch screen and now I have a PW 5 standard. I gave the 2018 version to our daughter to use and she’s happy with it.
    When the new Kindle basic came out I was curious to see if I wanted to go back to a six inch screen and lighter weight. My daughter and I switched Kindles for a week and I missed the warm light and bigger screen ALOT!! it does make a difference going from 6.8 to 6 inches if you’re used to the bigger screen.
    I work from home and rarely travel distances everyday that would allow me to read while out and about. So I’m happy to have the larger screen at home with warm light.
    If I had a work commute on public transportation or traveled fairly often each week, the six inch I feel is the way to go. Unless you go near water everyday 😊

    Thank you for your in-depth comparisons and analysis videos -- I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these! I was surprised you didn't mention one of the biggest differences between these two models: weight. I've has a signature edition for about a year, and I love everything about it, except how heavy and uncomfortable it gets to hold onto after a while, and the flush bezels make it even harder to hold onto the sidee without accidentally turning the page. I recently got the new basic edition for my wife based on those facts, especially since they've evened out a lot of the other differences. For readers with arthritis or fibro or any other condition that affects hand strength/grip/pain, this can be a deciding factor.

    • @Maneetpaul
      @Maneetpaul  Pƙed rokem +7

      That's a great point! With a smaller screen and different materials being used for the build quality, the weight is naturally lighter. Thanks for calling this out!

      Hi, I am thinking about purchasing my very first Kindle and I have no idea which one should I choose. I was watching a lot of reviews but I think I need some help haha. In the beginning I was convinced that I should buy the Paperwhite version but I am afraid it may be too big and unhandy and now I am considering Basic 2022 because of the smaller size and weight - but at the same time, isn't that too small? I am used to reading paper books and I don't want to feel like I am reading on my phone, because size is similar haha. I hope you can help me somehow, because I really really want to buy one, I'm just not sure which one should I pick :(

    I have the Paperwhite & having come from an iPad I LOVE it. My idea device though would be all the current Paperwhite features in a 6” screen. My kindle much like my phone is an EDC so the slightly smaller size is ideal, though the 6.7” is compact like a paperback. The flush screen & temperature adjustment were the deciding factors, I use the temp adjustment every time I read.

    note for the future: the rubbery reeling plastic of the paperwhite plastic finish will degrade over time (several years) and then become sticky/gummy it's a known finish/treatment
    that feels great for a few years then it decays and goes all gluey and horrible (i have it on a few synths here)
    for me i'd go with the normal plastic as i'd like to use a kindle for more than 4 years.
    If you're fine with refreshing your kindle every 5 or so years you might never get to the plastic glue stage.

    • @cresshead
      @cresshead Pƙed rokem +9

      note - scrubbing the surface with IPA (can remove the glue/finish when it does happen... it'll not look pretty but it it's in a case you'd mostly not see it.
      Available at amazon.
      99.9% Pure I.P.A. cleaning fluid - Brilliant for all purpose cleaning
      Evaporates quickly - making it brilliant for cleaning electrical components including removing thermal paste from processors

    I have both the New Paperwhite and the New Basic, and to me there is a difference in speed, with the Paperwhite being faster, so I would guess that the processors are likely not the same. Another noticeable difference between the Paperwhite and Basic is battery life. Over time, I've come to realize that my Paperwhite lasts maybe 20-25% longer on a full charge than the Basic.đŸ€” And to be perfectly honest, between the two models, the Basic could easily become my GOTO Kindle👍

    For me personaly flush screen is a deal breaker. I had both Kindle Paperwhite 4 and Oasis 3 and every time I read on it felt like I need stronger glasses, slightly blurry and that very often gave me headaches from trying to “focus” my eyes on it. Then I bought PocketBook InkPad 3 Pro and later Kobo Libra 2 and oh boy, that’s a huge difference! It no longer gives me headaches, everything is as sharp as a printed book and I absolutely love it. Unless Amazon brings new premium Kindle with indented screen, I’m never going back.

      Yes, the flush screen sounded good but luckily I saw it in person before ordering. Strong glare, glass feel instead of textured paper feel, lower contrast, and yes, slightly out of focus letters because of the raised glass. In addition, it's so much easier to have your fingers slip off the bezel and turn the page accidentally when there's no physical border. I bought the basic and am very happy.

    I didn't know about the rear texture difference. Here's my opinion. I have two Paperwhites from 2015 (3 or 7, depending on how you count it). One black and one white. I didn't even know this because I kept them in cases but the white Kindle has a solid plastic back, while the black Kindle (same model!) has a rubbery texture. I've had them for 6 years and the white plastic is beautiful and looks new, while the black rubber looks terrible. There are stains and discoloration that don't go away. I tried cleaning it but hand prints and case imprints are marking up the entire rear of the black Kindle. It just feels unpleasant to use, while the white one is still awesome. This is why I was relieved to find that the new basic has a full plastic rear panel. I traded in my black Paperwhite for it. I won't want to purchase another rubbery Kindle.

      Paperwhite 5 is too big for pockets unless you wear work pants that are baggy. I have seen a paperwhite with screen damage due to a fall. The screen is unreadable after the damage. Better get a case.

    I've had a Kindle basic for 3 years now, and I just got the newest Paperwhite. Instantly it looks so much more clear than the 2020 Basic, so much faster too. I got it 100% for the warm light and dark mode. The ancient 2020 Basic has none of that. Night readers represent! The basic with Brightness at level 1 was still blinding to my eyes.

      yeah, but we're comparing the 2022 Kindle Basic and the Paperwhite, so the gap is a lot smaller.

    I have had a PW1 since 2012 and used it constantly, It has 2GB and I never filled it! About a year ago I bought the new 2021 Paperwhite with the larger screen and all the bells and whistles The USB-C is much easier and faster charging. I have the screen set permanently to the warm setting which is much easier to read, I like the Bookerly font which is new from the PW1 and for me this 8GB Paperwhite is just perfect. I don't see any problem with any occasional figerprints on the screen, it is easy to wipe over. I find the setup of the controls etc rather messy, bits and pieces all over the place, they could be reorganised to be more 'sensible'

    They actually don't have the same resolution... same ppi on different size screens means the resolutions are different...
