  • The wings of an Airbus jetliner and the wing sail of a yacht operate in similar ways. That’s why ORACLE TEAM USA, the America’s Cup defender, is utilising Airbus’ know-how to help achieve optimum performance on water. This video clip includes insight from Ian “Fresh” Burns, Performance Team Manager for ORACLE TEAM USA.

The race boat has a similar way of racing in terms of the foils to a pinewood derby car; three wheels to three foils. Less friction

There's me thinking the winglets on the end of an airplane wing are to help defeat the drag developed by wing tip vortices.Silly me.

+Ecoenergy Of course they are, but that means gaining back the part of the wing near the wingtip that can't produce lift because of that drag, so it's not actually wrong to say that the wing "appears like a longer wing" when using winglets.

These are not boats. Races should be for real boats with real hulls or for "modified "seacraft" The America's Cup and other old races should be for hulled craft only not experimental designs. These races should not be multi-million Euro/dollars(any type) events.

Have you ever heard of a hydrofoil boat? This is a real thing. I suggest you look it up.
