  • I’ve been making more of these ceramic pieces where I wrap clay around wooden blocks. This way of working helps to retain the soft feel of the clay in the fired final pieces. This video follows the journey of the pieces from making and constructing the slabs through to adding slips, engobes and underglazes and then onto analysing the fired final pieces and the process of making decisions about whether a piece is finished or not.

    It's so good watching this as it makes me me feel less anxious about just having a go.

    Watching you working makes me remember how much fun it was creating as a child, engaged in the joy of the process over concern for the outcome. Thank you for the reminder! Watching from Canada : )

    You have opened up so many possibilities in my mind - just a beginner but I appreciate seeing that breaking the rules can lead to exceptional results. I'm in the US and it seems the clay you commonly use is only available in the UK, would you able to recommend other clays that would have similar characteristics? Thank you so much for sharing so generously!

      The main things that I look for in clay is it’s colour when fired and the feel of it which I want to be slightly gritty. Sometimes I use more heavily grogged clay. I often say to people that the type of clay you use is not that important. It’s not the clay that matters but what you do with it.

    I enjoy learning from you and am sponging in all sorts of valuable information. I am new to pottery and was wondering what is “ on gobe”? You loosely brush on yellow on gobe ( that’s how it’s spelled in the transcript) . Is it a slip based underglaze?
    Thank you for sharing your creative experience.

      It’s Engobe, sometimes called vitreous slip. Good luck with your ceramic journey.

    Is it okay to add Terracotta slip on a different clay body such as stoneware? Or are you actually using earthenware for your pieces that are wrapped around these pieces of wood ?

    • @CraigUnderhill7
      @CraigUnderhill7  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I’m not keen on the earthenware / Stoneware distinction. It’s the clay body, slip or glaze recipe that matters and the temperature it’s fired to. I use terracotta slip on a stoneware clay and fire it to cone 1. That works for me.

      @CraigUnderhill7 Thank you so much for getting back to me. I see what you mean. So if you fire to cone 1 , does the stoneware you are using get vitrified? Usually, stoneware clay needs to be fired to a higher temperature. Sorry to bother you. I just wanted to double-check . I usually make mugs, so vitrification is important for me. Maybe it isn't that important when making a vase or sculpture ?

      I’m not sure, I’m not familiar with air drying clay. Only one way to find out.

    iS IT A STAINED CLAY OR A BLACK NATURAL CLAY ??thank you

    • @CraigUnderhill7
      @CraigUnderhill7  Před rokem

      I buy the black clay from a supplier. I’m sure it’s got stains and oxides in it that makes it black.
