Easy FREE Disk cloning and drive migration with Disk Genius Free Macrium reflect alternative
www.diskgenius.com/free.php
With Macrium Reflect now killing off the free version of the software, there is a gap in the market for a new go to option for free and easy disk cloning and system disk migration.
Seems that Disk Genius fits the bill and is a low footprint program that doesn't bog down the system or nag you for registration or upgrades.
This managed to clone my Windows 11 system disk to another drive in just slightly over 1 MINUTE!
that is incredible!
Clearly your mileage will vary depending on the drives you use and how much data there is on them, but it seems that the drives were performing at full speed, which is often not the case in the "free" version of apps like this.
I am glad to find a good alternative to Macrium reflect free, and hope it works well you you to.

Genius! After spending HOURS of time watching MANY confusing videos, I was finally able to clone my SSD to a new NVME M.2 in minutes! Thank you very much! My C:\ drive was 98% full and I was running out of time!
Glad it helped! and thank you so much for the donation, very much appreciated
@@mikesunboxing *Well deserved!* _Enjoining the channel... Cheers!_
Thanks appreciate that
same i have 99% full
The problem seems that the free versions of cloning software are cloning your hard drive but it is not actually booting.

Thanks for posting this. After cloning with two other programs...free and paid...I still couldn't get my laptop to boot. Then I found this video last night and tried this and within an hour or so, I'm up and running. Thanks again.
Glad I could help
Thanks Mike, really easy to follow and just the right level of detail given the amount of options that the tool gives. Its a shame that the companies that make these keep dropping the clone option from the free option but I cant blame them, I cant remember ever upgrading to a paid version except maybe 15 years ago on a data recovery product. My own clone on an old PC took about 4 hours as I was copying about 500gb sata ssd to 2tb sata ssd via USB using the hot option.
Thanks Mike this really saved me. You made it so easy. AND finding free software that is "really" free is amazing. Great video, great job.
Glad it helped!
just did this using this app and its worked absolutely perfectly. Thank you for making such an easy to follow video. Moved Windows from a very old intel 60GB SSD to a samsung Evo 970 2TB
Yes, I did this just now and it worked like a breeze. Very easy.
Glad it helped!
What a great piece of software! Having recently manually moved all my games from 2x drives onto new 2Tb m.2 and then swapped drive letters around so steam / epic etc werent aware of any changes then this software would made it so much quicker and easier to achieve. Thanks for sharing Mike & Kath, have a great weekend 🐈👍
data swapping and cloning is a laborious chore it hate it, this makes it easy, i like easy
After struggling with some other free software, I came across this video. Simple and easy to follow and I successfully cloned my HDD to my NVMe! Thanks so much!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for this video Mike. I've wasted a lot of time recently trying free versions of software only to find that the clone feature has been disabled. So this program will help, might download it before they change it. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks 🙏
Thanks Mike! I was able to migrate from a SanDisk SSD to a Crucial P3 Plus NVMe. This video is very helpful with a very detailed explanation. Great job!
Glad it helped!
The best tutorial i've seen on internet. Thanks, keep the good work man.
Wow, thanks!
Great how-to. I forgot that I downloaded this and installed it awhile back. Thanks for sharing Mike and Lady Kath. Take care everyone. Cheers
cheers Rick
Quality video, ive been looking to do this recently and you've answered my questions! Cheers for the help
glad it helped
Great video, thanks for the info!
Took about 4 hours to transfer 1.2 TB off my HDD to the new SSD, a lot quicker than I honestly anticipated.
Glad it helped! i did another disk clone yesterday NVME to USB NVME and it was about 5 minutes and when the drive was swapped it booted first time
that was awesome, my new SSD drive is suppose to arrive tmrw and I've been looking for a easy/reliable cloning software -- thanks again for posting I will definately watch again lol
Glad I could help
I Want to say thanks Mike. this honestly saved me when I was stuck installing a brand-new SSD in place of my old SSD. I followed the instructions and cloned my old SSD onto already installed HDD and from there onto the new SSD as my pc only had room for one NVME M2 slot. no joke I was stressing out trying to fix it on my own with other guides till I tried this.
Glad it helped
It was about time to find a free program that offers system migration without compromises. Thanks a lot!
Thank yo so much for your tutorial!! I did as instructed and everything worked great, now I have a better and perfect functioning SSD with all my previous windows programs and set ups. Awesome, five stars.
Glad it helped! thanks for commenting
Great video ! Id noticed that Macrium had done the update to put their services behind a paywall so Ive been looking for an alternative. Not heard of DiskGenius before so I'll be getting that bad boy installed. Thanks Lady Kath and Furry Face Mike !
lol thanks bob! used this a few times now, and seems to do everything macrium was known for, and no need for registration
I gave it a try and it worked well. I had to clone the drive I had in the small itx I had near the tv because I put uograded it. Good find!
yeah this will be the new macrium for a while
Thanks! This video was exactly what I needed. Working on upgrade for my Surface Pro 7+
Thank you so much, that is very kind of you
Mike - many thanks mate, this program was the only one that worked and my laptop booted up instantly !! Brilliant 🤩
Glad it helped
Macrium gave me errors!
This video saved my life. My new m.2 boots windows perfectly since following ur videos
Thanks man....took me a while to find a channel I trusted, and I found you. In appreciation.
I appreciate that!
worked like a charm my friend. thanks
This is the best tutorial on the internet period! You saved me an entire day of stress thank you!
haha glad to help my friend
Thanks for this! My neighbour has asked me to look at his 12 yr old machine and I'll be using this to migrate a knackered HDD to a SSD to prolong its life!
hope it helps you in the process
you’ve helped me in the past before with ram i knew your video would be the right choice🙏
thank you, so kind of you to say. Hope to be able to help you out again sometime
Followed this procedure - worked perfectly the very first time. Thank you!
Great to hear!
Thank you for a trouble free system migration tutorial. It was nice and easy to follow.
Glad it was helpful!
Ty, the software did everything perfectly!
Mike Thank You. I just get new M.2's and your video will be very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Very well evaluated with notable caveats. Appreciate your work. 👍
Many thanks!
Good video great job easy to follow and did the trick asap now if i hit a brick wall just load the other copy great stuff saves a lot of time thanks
Glad to help
Hi mate thanks for the info and advice , just about to do my change over to a bigger m.2 and i think i will resize my partition .All the best till next time
No problem 👍
I did install this last week - nice tool to have - thanks for the video - I'm sure I will refer back to it at sometime.
sad that macrium is not free anymore, but this seems to be a viable alternative
thankyou it works spot on my comp started up straight away
glad to hear it
FANTASTIC, SIMPLE and IT FINALLY WORKS
Glad it helped
Just so you know, if you have Macrium v7.3 free edition, it still works. Just disable auto-update. Although, you can still update it to version 8 before disabling updates.
If you had the foresight to export the bootable ISO image, Macrium 7 free still works just fine (Feb 2024).
Thanks mike, like you i started noticing the options for free drive ghosting have become more and more limited everytime i do a drive swap, this will be handy.
No problem 👍
Thanks Mike ,downloaded and cloned my samsung ssd to a nvme kingston and it worked perfect .
glad it helped. have a great weekend
absolutely best video out there for transitioning you SSD to new drive.
Glad you think so!
was so easy thank you for the great tips!
You're so welcome!
I came across Disk genius recently when researching an M.2 migration from 500GB to a gen 4 1TB. I have been using Macrium for some time to do backups but as support is ending soon I was looking for an alternative. Being retired I needed a cheap option 😂. I can't believe how quickly DG did the clone and changed the boot sequence. WIN 11 and several games and all my programs done in under 10 minutes. Highly recommended. Thanks for the video it's covered some of the options I haven't explored yet.
thanks for the comment, have a great day
been looking for a replacment to Macrium Mike it was brilliant !!! thanks for this !!!
Happy to help!
@@mikesunboxing took me a little while to figure how to do a full backup Mike , but got there in the end with the built in help 👌👌👌 Cheers Mike ....Shaun.
@@GhostRider247 Glad it helped you 🙂
I use the older free Macrium Reflect rescue USB thumb drive to create images from all my machines as a backup. That drive still supports a lot of hardware, including my new Lenovo Ideapad Slim 14” laptop.
such a shame they stopped the free version
thanks a lot men, i look for hours difference softwares and and just this one works perfectly, FREE and very fast.
You're welcome!
Disk Genius worked perfectly. 1 tb ssd to 1 tb m.2 nvme (in an external USB 3.1 enclosure). 800 gigs took 30 mins. Did the hot method, surprised it worked as this is usually a problem when cloning.
Good to hear
Ive been looking for something like this to migrate my Gen 3.0 NVME to a new Gen 4.0. Thanks for this.
if you use it let us know how you get on
thanks for the tip
having a basic feature locked behind a paywall is a pain for someone who will just use the software once but can be a way for the developer to attract attention of pottential paying users
Disk Genius Free works very well and has a ton of partition tools built in. Now that Macrium and MiniTool no longer support free transfers (cloning) it's a great program to have. PLUS it will transfer to a smaller drive as long as there is enough space on the target drive to accept the transfer. No more equal or larger drive size required message blocking the transfer, even the Aomei Partition Assistant I bought would do that. So Disk Genius Free will be my GoTo for cloning and monthly Incremental System Backups, cause it's easy to do. Thanks for the very informative video.
great piece of software
As far as I can tell, you can still use macrium to clone, and they offer a 30 day free trial. I haven't tried using it yet so I'm not sure if they make you input a credit card or something.

Nice and easy to undestand even its not my language. Bravo 🎹 thank you
Thank you too!
Tip for other Americans: Set speed to .75 -- Easy to understand :)
haha thanks for the tip
Very glad that you review this Disk Genius Free - Always bought Samsung drives (with Samsung software limited to target Samsung drives) - - - Great Review Mike thanks
Glad it was helpful!
thank you, after watching a lot of useless videos on yt finally i found a useful one
Thanks for the kind words
awesome stuff worked great! super simple. thanks M

Thank you so much, this video helped me a lot !
Glad it helped!
Thank you bro for took me all information and spent your time
thanks so much
Thanks! This was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Free and easy to use software, super helpful, thanks Mike
You're welcome!
Looks like I'll be using this now, as I failed to catch a giveaway of one of the others this time... Free version still on and still covers what's needed
i quite like it and it seems to be less of a resource hog than Macrium was
Thanks❤
I clone my hard disk to NVME m.2 SSD by using this Software and all steps on this video.
It’s very effective tool.
Thanks again ❤❤
Glad it helped
I use that Mini tool partition/shadowmaker software, it's really good bit of kit, always does a good job of backing up, cloning etc :)
Thanks for the tip!
I think that minitool has dropped the clone from the free version
Update Mike... I used this software to go from a 250GB nvme boot drive to a 1TB boot drive. Worked perfectly. 👍 Thanks for walking me through this. Take care guys. Cheers
Great to hear! i really like the software, does the job and free, sounds like a deal to me, as long as they aren't data scraping
@@mikesunboxing You Mike...that's seems to be the norm these days. Cheers
Thank you!It works perfect!👍
You're welcome!
Hasleo has a PE partition option for a recovery boot menu, tad annoying having a boot menu every boot however there is a BCDedit work around EDIT(1) there is a checkbox work around in Advanced System settings also I was too lazy to look 😫. EDIT(2) hasleo does clone & backup too tbf I have never used it to recover but cloning works
That works a treat, thank you.
Great to hear!
quick tip, if your old mobo doesn't have an m.2 slot, you may have an extra pcie slot available and can get an m.2 adapter for it. Even the 4x slot is capable of 3000/mbs. much faster than sata!
The new paradigm is clone to better drives on schedules from more finite failure estimates. A victory in consumer computing.
Hello Sir, I am from Tamil Nadu, India. Really very very helpful this video. Thank you very much Sir.
You are most welcome
Nice!!
I just purchased a new laptop, be here this week.
It has Win 11, I dont like 11 and all the bloatware.
Going to clone my Win10 (desktop) then install in new laptop.
This software should work great for this job!
Good luck!
Great video thanks Mike
You bet
Thank you Mike! And thank you to diskgenius
thanks for watching
Cloning drives is why I use Samsung drives with their 1 click cloning software. Unfortunately, they are on a higher end for cost. This looks like great alternative for a cheaper drive. Good video.
for real? I just bout a samsung 500 gig evo ssd, it comes with free cloning software? that would be excellent! It arrives in the mail monday it says.
Nice find Mike... worked really well, even resetting the boot drive automatically. Pleased to find this now that MiniTool and EaseUS charge (more than the cost of a 1TB drive) for the cloning function.
thanks, and glad you found it useful, i use this pretty much all the time now
Hi, Mike. What I have for cloning is a Sabrent USB C Docking Station. It clones M.2, 2.5" SSD's, and 3.5" HDD. So, no software needed.
Only drawbacks is you must remove the m.2 drives for this method. And it's not free. Did you water cool it!? *runs away*
i have a number of cloning stations but as with anything that is automated there are limitations. the bigger to smaller issue is often a deal breaker and the slow time to transfer empty bits
Thanks, for the information provided, it’s nice knowing there’s people like you out there that cares, excellent application.
I would like to know what type of computer case and hardware and Windows setup are you using on this video, looks simple but stunning nonetheless, not a lot of clutter or annoying led lights. I bet is as powerful as it looks. Oh, by the way, please processor type as well.
Thank you!
V.V.
thermaltake ceres 500 case, MSI B650 edge wifi motherboard and Ryzen 7 7700x processor. Glad you liked the video
Thank you for this. I believe Macrium is free for the first month. I'm trying to clone a dual boot NVME to a bigger NVME. It is Windows 10/Ubuntu dual boot. Any thoughts? Latest I heard is a offer of US$200 to do it.
Thank u bin at this for wile to find free software
Just like Macrium Reflect used to be! Thanks!!!
yes it is. Sad that macrium went the way it did, but that is corporate life for you
Thank you for this video. My question is...After using this procedure to clone my SSD, does all of the software that was installed on the source SSD remain functional on the target SSD? Or, does the software need to be reinstalled?
Thank you!
it will produce an exact copy of the drive without moving or deleting so when finished you have two identical drives both working as they did before you started
Cheers - I haven't heard of this one before. The big disadvantage most of these type of programs have is it will copy over the windows partition (great for backup only) and make it bootable, but forgets about (or won't allow) the other system recovery partitions to be copied as well. This seems to copy everything over. I'm keen to give it a try as I have a few PCs I'll be upgrading soon.
hope you enjoy using it, i really enjoy the simplicity
worked great thanks for the Video
You're welcome!
Is there a reason you chose to manually choose your boot drive
thank you very much for this tutorial and info.
Glad it was helpful!
brilliant saved me a lot of time thanks
happy to help
I did the system migration but it only cloned the partition with the Windows in it so i have to clone the other partition again. Hope it works!
i use for years Samsung Data Migration. Free to use software that only work with Samsung SSD. I have 3 Samsung M.2 SSD'S and this software works perfect. It creates a snapshot "clone" of the current situation.
2 time's i needed the clone for repair.
I make a clone every week, sometimes an extra clone in high-risk situations.
always a good idea to make a backup
Great video. Nice West Country accent ;-)
Thanks! 😃Bristol all the way
Can you clarify the difference between "System Migration" and "Clone Drive" in this software? If you (or I) use the Clone Disc option, won't the newly cloned drive be bootable?
system migration is the primary partitions and c: drive. cloning is a direct one for one copy of the source drive
Thanks Mike. The video and info are excellent. I started migrating my 250 gig disk last night and it is not even half done today. I think something is wrong. Do you recommend I stop and start over?
yes something sounds very wrong there, what was the data transfer rate?
@@mikesunboxing Thanks for responding. It looks to be 28 MBs/minute
Waoo ! This work perfectly TY so moch
You're welcome!
I did exactly the same as you, but ended up with a cloned ssd drive that wouldn't boot (0xc000000e error on a bsod). I couldn't manage to repair the drive whatever I tried, and ended up re-cloning - the only difference being I used the automated boot option. It seems to have worked. I suspect the reason for the failure is pretty obscure and probably random. I'm not that much of a techie to know, tbh. Any comments welcome.
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
So, a bit more explanation about where the DiskGenius Program is to be installed in the "Select Destination Location" would be appreciated. My laptop only has "Drive C" to select as a destination to send it. If I select any location in my old Drive C, will the "Warning" regarding the destruction of all files actually happen? I ended up choosing the default folder in Drive C anyway and the program successfully migrated all data and programs on my old Samsung HDD to my new Crucial SSD. Your video had me take on this task with complete success. Thank you.
thanks for the feedback and comment
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you for sharing your time and experience with us. The GTRacing Ace Series M1 link EUR link that you provided appears to be invalid.
okay thanks i'll check that out. To be honest there are probably better options available now, like the new corsair one
I would have liked to have seen this performed using the WindowsPE option. I’m wondering if you choose that option is it best to install the software on a different hard drive than the one you’re cloning?
it uses the Windows shadow volume copy so it isn't a problem
Hello, trying to figure out how to back my drive to an image file? When I try the backup feature it asks for a file to backup to, it doesn't create a new one?
you create the file name then it should work
Thatnk you, that rly help me.
glad it helped
