I know this video is over 2 years old now, but I have to mention this for anyone who came to this video to have instruction on cloning their main drive to a new drive. AOMEI no longer allows system clones in the freeware version or the pro trial of their software. You have to purchase the pro version license. Just an FYI.
Yesterday I tried it to clone a SSD to a HDD so I can use the SSD in a different PC. And it worked with the Standard version. (both drives MBR)
So for me to be able to clone my hdd to an ssd and then get rid of the HDD entirely, will I need to also install an operating system to the new(never used) SSD or will the O's being copied also? I do not have a windows disc to do so. Is this the difference between disk clone and system clone in AOMEI?
@@RuschFamilyAZ Yes. Disk clone and system clone are different. I tried using disk close to clone the drive my os was on to a new ssd and the program, at least for me, wouldn't even allow me to clone the os.
@@seasearch Bummer, we are trying to clone my son's sluggish HDD to an ssd. This is frustrating to know I bought an SSD and can't even do what we thought we could.
@@RuschFamilyAZ you still can you will just have to pay for the program. It’s not terribly expensive and it does work really good i will say that. I ended up paying for it and had zero problems.
For those of who are late to the party, use Macrium Reflect Free edition to clone your drives as the AOMEI is no longer supporting cloning on the free version. I just completed cloning pcie3 250GB drive to a pcie4 500GB drive in just 13 minutes without any dramas.
Cheers
Thanks
Was going to image the drive and restore with WinPE, then found Macrium Reflect and skipped all that 😂
They still support cloning in the free version... for MBR disks, but not GPT disks.
have always used MR good software. Free version is being stopped in Jan of 2024
Can you clone Windows using same SW to micro SD Card?
Yeah, that's also no longer free.
About time Microsoft built an OS utility to emigrate installations.
Something kept bringing me back to this video. There's something about your cadence that made me watch this video several times until last week my C drive hit maximum capacity. I ordered the docking station and an SSD drive, downloaded the pirated version of AOMEI Backupper because the free version wouldn't allow cloning and cloning my drive right now at 68%. Thank you so much for the encouragement and all the details. Also, you uploaded the video on my birthday so maybe that was a sign that I kept coming back to it lol. Cheers Mate!
Thank you so much! For a luddite like myself you made this so easy to understand and much less intimidating than many of the previous instructions I looked up. Thank you for explaining what you were doing and why so thoroughly and simply!

This video was fantastic! I just did a complete rebuild, went from an SAMSUNG PRO 1TB nve TO A 2TB, took an hour for the clone and 30 seconds to fix the partition. This is the smoothest build I'ver ever gone through. Not a single mess up or hitch. That never happens lol. Even when I opened chrome for the first time it asked if it could restore my pages that I had open just before I cloned. Incredible. Thanks man.
Maybe that's why it's called a clone. 😂
It's asking me to buy it? Did it ask you to do that too?
@@RR-ho3td yeah I’m trying currently and is asking me to buy it. It does not give an option to skip and continue.
This is amazing, it even automatically changed the drive letter to C: and moved the original drive to E:. No need for manual name changing.
That was fantastic. Many thanks for taking the time to produce something as informative as this video!
went from an HDD to an SSD, using this method about a year ago and it worked flawlessly. just recently deleted the old windows of the the HDD. Thank you very much for this video

Thank you, Jay!! I cloned my Nvme ssd drive to a bigger drive 2 years ago and was going insane trying to figure out why the new drive wouldn’t boot on Windows 10! 2 years later, now I know why! Thanks to you! 👍 I’ll be doing this tomorrow! And finally have my bigger windows 10 drive!
Found you doing a search for cloning and can not stop looking at that rig.
I have searched your videos, but I can not seem to find the one you mentioned.
I just subscribed and thank you for your very helpful information.
Now please send me in the direction of that rig.
I know I won't be using this anytime soon-- but boy when I need it I can always count on Jay to tell me every detail. I would trust this dude to fix anything.
If you trust Jay implicitly, then you're a bit of an idiot. He tinkers with hardware, but when it comes to software he doesn't know very much. Firstly, cloning a running Windows installation is not a straight-forward process because of in-use files. Secondly, you do NOT get an unused partition if you clone onto a larger HD. Unused space is NOT the same a partition or even close. So, by all means, trust Jay, but since this kind of stuff is my job, I know that's he's taking crap and way out of his depth.

Thanks, jay. I hope you are getting well your information is Greatly appreciated
Thanks, JZ. I bought a larger SSD some time ago and had absolutely no idea of how or what software to use to clone my old D: drive to the new. There's tons of stuff on CZcams, but the first one even suggested software that installed malware that Defender couldn't fix!! How's that? I've had to re-install Windows. But managed to migrate using your suggestion. I'll soon be needing to do this. I really appreciate this fam.
Excellent video, did all that. Works like a charm, thanks. Bought me a Samsung QVO 870 1TB SSD at a sale ($90). First run to clone failed because i selected “SSD Alignment” (option can also be selected to optimize the
performance if the destination is an SSD) because they advised it highly. Took up to 80% (4 hours) when it came up with a Failed Error (Not enough space). I did it again without it and still used sector by sector transfer and all my partitions on the 1TB Drive were perfectly cloned, including the three Windows partitions. Swapped the Drives and at first boot all great. Good speed improvements and a lot more snappy. Spending up to $40 for one time use is a bummer, but you get a lot of backup options. Thanks again showing us this feature, it made a change for the better for me.
THAT was a superb video! Been watching for a while and am buying components for a Christmas new build for my 13 year old son. This will help a lot, thank you.

Yesss I just bought an ssd for my girlfriends computer
NOT FREE THOUGH. ALSO PROBABLY MALAWARE... The uninstall took me to a web browser and you shouldn't have to give your information for a download of a cloning tool.
This is literally what I woke up to do today. What perfect time Jay! Thanks so much!
The " Two Cents" analogy pales in comparison to it's real value ! True knowledge, is Priceless !
So, Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks Jay. I know this is an older video, but it was really useful for me in cloning a bunch of PC's from spinning HDD's to SSD's.
One thing I'd say to anyone following this is that if you have the ability, then definitley connect your new/destination SSD via SATA and do the clone from there rather than a USB hub as I've found it MUCH quicker (less than an hour doe 500GB drive) than in the video using a USB type hub (I have one, too). Once the clone is done, I simpy detach the old HDD and plug in the new SSD to the same port as the previous drive on the Motherboard (I'm not even sure that's necessary, but I guess it's minor OCD or something).
bro, did the windows also cloned and worked with option clone disk ?
Yes it did.
Thanks a lot bro 🤝

This software is dodgy. Once you pass the paywall, most clones WILL NOT boot properly and they crash randomly due to dx???? Errors
@@joshhibbert2781 This software is not dodgy. I am an it professional and have used the free version many times and prefer it to the others eg Acronis etc. Now have the paid version. Never found any issues with the free version. Best free software that I have come across. I recommend it.
@@magneter100 first 3 backups finished and appeared successful but once trying to use the cloned system as the boot drive, they continually crashed with stop code errors and sudden blue screen hangups. Regular back ups were fine but system clones to move c: drive to an ssd or other drive were very problematic and hard to be confident that they will work
Hahahahhaa
@@magneter100 It would be interesting to know why Mr. Hibbert has/had those problems. Of course, there are always variables like "operator error" or the way various computers are set up. In my experience, trying to trouble shoot a computer problem without physically working on the machine. @GoldenQueenDiva I used Macrium Reflect Free for the cloning and followed the video for everything else (which isn't much tbh) and it worked great and made a bootable drive for me (went from a hard drive to a smaller ssd)
Had a 5 year old HDD start clicking - panic bought a new larger HDD and used the freeware AOMEI products listed here to successfully clone the HDD before it died. Much appreciated Jay!
You should really clone to an SSD. I just did it from an HDD and the speed gain is amazing. For example, photos would constantly crash now I can load all my photos in seconds in the photos app without crashes. A three hour virus scan took about 15 mins.
I know 99% of everything that you are explaining - just here for the tool. But man - how well you explain! I couldn't have done it even close to that. Kudos!
Yes I did have to subscribe. Also when he said much faster for NVMe. I wasn't expecting it to be a bit less then 10mins. Man that's quick.
Awesome! Currently using this to clone my smaller drive I use for my steam library to a bigger faster drive! Thanks Jay! ^_^
Thanks for this Vid Jayz! With this i was able to clone my old system from a hdd to a new nvme SSD in under 2 hours.

I find Reflect easier to use
my man
I went from a 1tb drive to an 8tb drive and I used macrum reflect to clone the drive and it booted up perfectly. Paired up with optane perfectly too, so that’s my recommendation as well
Same here. I've done it twice now. Once from a 1TB HDD to 1TB SSD, then again from that 1TB SSD to a 500GB M.2. Getting it cloned to the smaller drive was a little more difficult, but I eventually figured it out and everything works perfectly. Now the HDD and SSD are mainly photo/video back up space.
Macrium Reflect all the way.
Excellent tutorial my man! Sub'd! Crystal clear, straightforward, and I feel as if you touch on every key point but in a very concise and effective way that doesn't overload/overwhelm. Kudos to you my friend. At this point I've now watched several tutorial videos on this topic, but yours takes the cake and will be the one I follow when I do my upgrade. Thanks for putting this together.
The Best tutorial to learn how to make a windows clone disk properly
Thank you sir. You've helped me a lot
If you are having trouble with the paywall, make sure to initialize your new drive in the same format as your old drive. My old HDD was GPT while my freshly installed SSD was MBR (you can see these details in AOMEI as well). Using "create and format hard disk partitions," I was able to initialize my new SSD as GPT to avoid the paywall. (Converting and cloning a GPT drive to an MBR drive was only in the pro version). There are still other locked functions like expanding partition sizes to fill up bigger drives than the original disk, but luckily I did not have to deal with that in my case and I was able to use AOMEI with no other problems.
Both of my drives are in GPT but I still got the paywall
@@rat2128 what version are you using? And what feature does it say is locked?
@@alfredosaus1545 it looks like gpt to gpt is also paywalled
@@jamesclements3463 Yep, same here, I tried using the "free 30 day pro trial" and it's still paywalled, it won't let me clone GPT -> GPT.
Complete waste of time and I'm not going to use it more than once really, so I'm not paying $40 for a 1 year licence, that's like half the price of the SSD!
This worked perfectly for me. Cloned my 500GB SSD to 1TB NVMe. Then used the partition assistant to adjust partitions and erase the SSD. Was easy and quick for me.

Thank you for this tip, it was very useful for me, especially because I don't want always to format my PC and I need to keep the things running. Well, thank you!
Even in 2021 still a great tutorial. Only have to use the version of this video (6.3, December 2020) and it works!
I think it's important that you guys who do these videos try and get across to the uninitiated the benefits of spending a little extra cash to purchase an extra drive and have it there just in case. I've been cloning my drives for years (I go back to the early days of Ghost) and it's always a comfort to know that if my drive goes bad I can just pop the other (cloned) drive in and be back up and running in no time. It's an easy way of dealing with a nasty virus too. I usually re-clone the drive if I install new software or make any major changes to the setup. That way both drives have the same software and configurations.
Literally 20-60 minutes with SSD ~ NVME transfers to be back up and running, or just boot directly from the drive and begin working if necessary. I've been doing it for years myself and it's saved me from so much grief.
@@JamieR : Yep - It's a pity not more people do it. I can do a complete clone in about 19 to 22 minutes as I keep most of my data stuff on the network drives. Another thing I generally do is create a restore point before I install applications.
Yes I do this because if your drive packs up just put the cloned drive in.
I agree. IMO much better than making traditional backups

WOW! Even with the version difference, this video showed me enough to feel confident enough to do it myself. The drive I was dupping was the root C:\ so Aomie rebotted into PT mode and copied the drive with no extra boot disks kludging about my nerd pit. Once the 300 gigs were cloned (took about 40 mins) from HDD to NVMe ir spammed into boot order and selected my new C drive - so perfect I was not sure it worked. After some system searvhing and my handy Drives manager widget, I knew with confidence that the NVMe was not only new, but bmy boot up went from a snails pace to checkered flag on race day. Thanks Jay!!!!!
I use mostly seagate drives(old habit I picked up at a company I worked for) so the seagate disk wizard is free to use. If you're using at least one seagate drive I would highly recommend it, it takes care of all the partitioning issue.

I love the AOEMI products and have used Backupper to clone a partition with my music files. I go back to the days of Norton Ghost and loved that program for cloning. Nowadays I use Acronis for all my cloning needs. I clone my C partition fairly regularly in case something happens. Acronis has saved my butt a few times. @@dorminnimrod4422 just transfers the data it doesn't magically add more memory to the drive my guy
@@dorminnimrod4422No. If you have a 1tb drive and clone it onto a 256gb drive it does not increase the size of the drive. What would happen in that scenario is the data would be cloned exactly as is. If you had the 1tb drive filled with 200gbs of data the cloning process would write all 200gbs of data to the 256 drive and you would have 56 left. However, if the 1tb drive had 500gbs of data on it the cloning software would scan the 256 drive and detect that the drive isn't large enough to hold all the data and the process would quit.

this aomei tool is really enough for me because my disks are mbr so it is nice
This video is just satisfying too just because the AMD build looks so good! ;)
Very well explained. Thanks for the help.
like always clean and simple :) ty jay
I used the free edition of Macrium Reflect instead.
As my new SSD (128GB) is smaller than the original SSD (256GB), I had to manually copy each partition and adjust the main partition size so there's 520MB remaining for the recovery partition. Once that was done, the clone worked perfectly.
Pretty much this. Why the hell isn't there a free software that can do this automatically yet?... Also if there is one, why the hell isn't it more popular?
EDIT: You can do it with this tool (Kinda) but you need to adjust the partition sizes with another tool after. He explains further into the video. Should have said that before starting IMO.
Jay, Thank you, SOOOO much for this. Got the new ssd all set up and installed and life is beautiful. lol :)
Macrium Reflect is also a free program that does the same job of cloning and partitioning. I have used
AOEMI products in the past and they tend to work well but cloning is often reserved for the paid version.
I just finished replacing the 2.5" spinny hard drive in a laptop with a larger-capacity SSD. I tried to clone the hard drive to the SSD with Acronis True Image (recommended by the SSD manufacturer), but it kept failing at the very end of the cloning of the C: partition. Then I tried AOMEI Backupper, and discovered that *its* *disk-clone* *feature* *isn't* *free* *anymore.* Then I tried Macrium Reflect, and it nailed it. It took me a little while to find Macrium Reflect's disk-clone function, but once I found it the process was cake. After replacing the hard drive with the SSD, I used AOMEI Partition Assistant to assign the unused space to the C: partition. The entire process of running Macrium Reflect, doing the drive swap and running AOMEI Partition Assistant took about 4.5 hours.
Perfect video and I can finally use it when I get paid. Just bought a tower with the 3200g and 1tb hdd but I plan to upgrade it. First I get an ssd, then a 16gb kit of ram and finally, I hit the used market for a gpu and buy a new psu. Paid $450 for the system and I plan to get an ssd asap.
Worked for me, this tool is actually nice because it's easy to handle and also powerful.
How did you do it for free? For me it says I have to pay for it
@@ewoudmeertens6956 same. I'm trying but keeps telling me to buy the pro version
Would love to see an updated video on backups and cloning.
This is by far the best drive clone tutorial.
Yeah. Too bad the devs decided to make the clone option available for Pro version only! Moneyyy!!!
The Clone feature in AOMEI Backupper is partial but it works for MBR disks so it that's not bad, I think this tool is useful in general.
Yeah, actually trying to do this now but it is trying to make me pay to do the simple disk clone. Guessing I'll have to find another way. Edit: Was able to do it with Macrium Reflect. Super simple and no BS. Cloned 350GB~ from SSD to NVMe in about 8 minutes. Pretty amazing.
@@TheThenewdiabolic can it clone os?
@@idabagusraiwidnyana4590 yes, I cloned a SATA SSD that had Windows 10 installed. It cloned to the NVMe, I unplugged the SSD, and it booted to the NVMe with no issue. Super simple and cloned way quicker than I thought it would.
@@TheThenewdiabolic wow. Thanks a lot dude!
I use Macrium as that can resize partitions and do the clone
In case it helps anyone who can't clone with the free version of Aomei, I just used Macrium Reflect free version and it did the job. Good luck cloners!
Another thing I would add if you're considering a new laptop is look for one that has easy access to the Ram slots and the hard drive. Some laptops require an almost compete strip down to access them. I have an older Lenovo that has one screw to access both memory and hard drive bay which makes is very easy to change hard drive on the fly if I need to.
