South Florida Beach Fishing With Live Bait

- I live in South West Florida. I've fished the beaches for many years. This video was recorded during the fall. I was scouting to see if the Spanish mackerel have arrived on our beaches yet. This is the time of year when the greenback shiners get really thick along the west coast of Florida. When the bait gets thick close to shore so do the lady fish, snook, flounder, jacks and spanish mackerel.
On this trip I only caught one snook, about twenty lady fish and a catfish. Hopefully within the next month or so the mackerel will begin to congregate in shore.
I usually fish during the late evening hours when fishing the beaches. I've managed to catch more fish just before sunset than any other time when fishing south west Florida shorelines.
I've always felt that the best bait to fish with on the beach is live greenback shiners that you catch with a cast net. I usually only fish the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico during the summer months for snook and during fall months for Spanish mackerel.
Unfortunately in the area of Florida that I live in we don't seem to enjoy the seasonal mullet run. At this time of year we have what I call the green back shiner run. The schools of bait fish get so populated along the shore that when you go swimming you can feel them hitting you.
I was rigged with ten pound test monofilament line paired with fifty pound test mono leader. I prefer using heavy leader when fishing for Spanish mackerel because they have killer teeth. I wasn't really targeting snook even though I caught one. If I'd been snook fishing I would have used thirty pound test for my leader. I tied the leader line directly to my main line and was using a one ought long shank hook. The longer hook works really good when you are catching fish that have teeth.

In this video I mentioned sharks several times because they are a real danger when you start catching a lot of fish near the beach shore. When the bait gets thick on the south west Florida coast sharks join in on the feeding frenzy too. When you've caught a bunch of fish in a short period of time the blood scent definitely is a shark attractant. In this video I tell a true story of when I was catching Spanish mackerel and the sharks showed up. One actually nabbed a fish that I was reeling in about ten feet away from me when I was wading in the water. It was a scary moment I'll never forget.

Good-stuff. Thanks for sharing
Awesome sunset fishing, the view is spectacular
It's a blast to fish the Florida west coast at sunset!
Beautiful intro man, the editing is getting good too. Keep it up brother!
Great video! I heard snook go to the beachs during winter to spawn but I've never tried fishing the beach for them. Maybe this winter I'll try.
Thanks for the comment. They are usually on the beaches during June, July and August. Check out my video on the best snook fishing lures. I give detailed information about where snook migrate and when.
Ken Jondoe snook spawn on the beaches in the summer not in the Winter
Great video. R u gonna do a video on how to rig and also hook the bait. And techniques on how your fishing it. That would help a lot of us trying to figure out how its done. Again awesome video.
Thanks for watching John. Those are great ideas. I'll see about putting something together soon.
Really good video the best!
Can you make a video showing how you rig your live bait for surf fishing, thanks!
Thanks for commenting Luis. Great idea for a video. Right now there's red tide in the area, bummer. I don't know when I'll be headed out to fish live bait again.

What type of line are you using braid or mono and what pound test for your line and leader
I think twelve pound mono on the main line in this video and I had fifty pound leader because I was hoping to catch spanish mackerel. Thanks for asking.
How come you were reluctant to grab the catfish? Are they poisonous or something
They have three very sharp, pointy spines, one dorsal, and one on each side of the fish, all near the head. Usually you take your hand from the middle and slide up behind these so you can secure the fish and not get poked.
what beach is?
South of Fort Myers somewhere?
