2-3 years later and I now can say through experience that GERBERS 420HC is freaking awesome.... I can also say that the Schrade was ok but mine had a major grind issue from the factory that couldn't be fixed. Schrades heat treat is also very unpredictable.
USA Gerber 420HC from my personal use is totally comparable to 1095 , its just slightly softer for ease of sharpening in the field.
I just love how informative this is, the fact that almost everything that he said is very factual and not just "in my opinion". I really loved this review. Keep up!
Thanks for the informative review. I am building my EDC/GHB on a limited budget. Currently I am working on upgrading my pack since some of the clips broke on the one I have, (It was a cheap starter bag). Once I get that done I will move to a decent knife and then flashlight. This review helps immensely when trying to decide which knife to consider. Ken T
Love your reviews. Always surprised how often you will push your blades into a rock though. Watching this made me think this way: If I want a great sheath, go w/ the Gerber. If I think I'll need to fight with it, go with the Gerber. But I'm not a soldier and I'm probably buying a camp/hiking/outdoors knife (not a sheath). They'll both cut paracord, a seatbelt, whatever box I have in front of me, and process down firewood. But the Schrade, with a recurve blade (which I strongly prefer), will cut better, cut deeper, gut smoother and, since I' haven't needed to stab anyone yet, probably suit my needs more.
I just got the green-handle Gerber but only for everyday basic uses. It seems well worth the money, made tough, easy to sharpen, very nice sheath. Gerber's not a combat knife,
it's a good basic survival and EDC and outdoorsman/camping knife. Mine definitely says Made in USA as well.
That's funny I was looking at it the other way. The gerber is a better all rounder and if I want to do serious bush crafting I am better off with a Mora. But I dig a hole and chop fire kindling more reliably with the strong arm. Just bought a strong arm and am very impressed. But yours is a fair point all the same. Now I need a schrade haha.

Well, it’s the Schrade for me. Love that re-curve, I have the SCHF9 and the re-curve, as well as the taller height of the blade, just fits me better.

At the end of the day both are good general purpose large utility knives and it just boils down to personal preference depending on how some one chooses to label themselves.

Great review of two good knives. I bought the Strongarm after your first review and have to say it is, without a doubt one of the most comfortable knives in hand, I have ever had. The sheath is fabulous, very well thought out to offer almost any option for carrying. The Schrade is very good also, Taylor brands has really stepped up there game in the last two or three years, and offer some great choices.

The strongarm saved my ass this year. I was in my tree stand deer hunting when on my wat up the tree my stand sliped and hung me upside down. Knowing i was in trouble hanging upside down i grabed my gerber and stuck it in tree were i could raise myself up. Then in 1 hand i held on while cutting my safety line and freeing myself.
I was thinking about writting to gerber and telling them my story.

Great review!! I just picked up the Strongarm. I think the big selling point for me was the utilitarian aspect and the sheath and the fact that it was made here in the US. I current own a SOG Seal pup and I beat the hell out of that knife and proved to be a great knife. But that sheath on Strong arm is probably the best designed and versatile sheath ever made.
Yup, the Strongarm is one of the years best knives. 'Softer' stainless is finally finding its place in the knife world - mid sized fixed blades. I hammered the strongarm into a tree and stood on the far end and it was unscathed. US production, classic looks, increased versatility through simplicity. I'd choose the strongarm over a lot of the 4-6 inch crowd. The schrade definitely has its place, but its appeal isnt as broad. I've just been busy selling lots of my knives to keep the blades flowing, but I couldn't let the strongarm go.

Great review as always. I like the concept behind the video. I would love to know what your top 3 under 5.5 inch blade in a few price ranges for a woods oriented backpack or camping knife. Personally I am looking for something under like $80 but a variety of price ranges for a "best of" style video would be super helpful. I am sure they are out there but not by most of the people I subscribe to, that I have found yet. High quality reviewer such as yourself are hard to find. Thanks and God bless!

Picked up the Schrade on a whim not too long ago. Didn't like the scale material at all. But before I just threw the stock handles out, I figured I'd see if they could be stippled. It worked fantastically!! Still have them on the knife.
Been beating the brakes out of this thing since the day I got it. Great choice for a knife you can use hard and not cry over if you lose or damage it.
I Love my Strongarm.. it's tough, holds a great edge and does what I need it to do. Have had 0 issues from it.. the grip is perfectly grippy with 0 slip. Chops, cuts and is a great EDC for in and out of the sticks. Plus it's American Made! Not a big Schrade fan and by the looks, the grip looks like it could slip meaning lost knife or injury to thy self. But, to each their own. Everyone has there personal preference when it comes to anything.
If you need to, Gerber makes plenty of fixed straight edge blades.. another thing I Love about the Strongarm is the choice in Color and straight edge or serrated blades. But as I said it all comes down to personal preference, and my personal preference is the Strongarm with the straight edge.

Cheap grip tape is a necessary upgrade to the 42. This is also a sheath issue because the retension strap on my 42's sheath is tight enough that a little grip tape on the handle makes it difficult to snap. While I am happy with the Schrade, I am a bit envious of the Gerber's sheath.

I was honestly looking around to see what my next knife would be. But I count myself in the Be prepared for almost any situation survival knife. I was leaning towards the Gerber but the Schrade seems like more useful for what I think I might need it for. The schrade's also cheaper on Amazon than the non serrated Strong arm. The only problem I have and what other people don't like is the curved belly. Other than that though amazing knife!

Great review as always! So 4 years later the Gerber has increased to 70 bucks! The Schrade us still 46 bucks. Both cool knives for different purposes as you pointed out. Forgetting the huge price difference for now, in this size i'd go Schrade because for a more utilitarian/fighting/survival type knife the Gerber is too small for my preferences. And now at 70 bucks for a sub-5 inch 420HC steel, albeit well made knife, that totally eliminates the Gerber. A lot better options out there for a lot less money.

Seven years later... 😄 I have a lots of knifes, I am from Germany and here are many companies that produce high-quality knives. But the Gerber strongarm for me is the perfect knife I was looking for my whole life. I didn't know the knife and bought it a week ago. And I love it! the size the weight the way it feels in your hand.... Great! It fit's to German law (only blades up to 12 cm are allowed, so I had to grind 2mm off to be law conform) so that I can carry it and that's what I do. It's my new EDC knife. For daily tasks but also for safety. This knife just feels good and natural when I hold it in my hand. Greets 🤙
I have the smaller SCHF55 and so I know what the 42 is like in terms of quality and such. I find this an odd comparison as in my mind they are very different. I think it would have been a good idea to have had a few more knives, because this was different. It wasn't a "Which is best?" video, but more about making a choice. I also would have liked to see the serrated version as well. You showed us two good knives and demonstrated their strengths and weakness without exagerrating or bashing one model and for that reason I liked watching this video.
What I would like to see is a comparison of the Strongarm, the Gerber Prodigy, and the LMF 2. It sort of confuses and baffles me that Gerber is offering all three. Also nobody has mentioned or reviewed the Prodigy Coyote with the fine edge (No serrations) and the ceramic coated blade. I have seen the Strongarm in the clam shell package, but have only actually handled the new Prodigy and I love the handle, but they're the same price. So is one really better than the other/s or is just about having choices?

+imsuckingwind I despise most of Gerber's stuff as it has just been crap, marketed at kids and BG fanboys... But the strongarm seems decent. I'd still take a becker over it though.
Personally, I have never been a fan of Gerber, but I am a fan of the Strongarm. Reluctantly, I bought one a while back, and after a ton of vigorous use, I've found that it holds up outstandingly well. I wouldnt trade it for the world at this point.

Great video as usual, Aaron. I've been following the Gauntlet Reviews on the Gerber and have been extremely impressed! The Schrader also looked promising but you summed it up perfectly, and brought up THE most important aspect when buying a knife, or any weapon, tool or gear, what kind of person are you? That is the crux of the matter right there! I'm no bushcrafter so the Gerber would be my choice.
On a totally unrelated note: how is Tommy the trail dog doing since the accident? I haven't heard anything since.

Utilitarian. I like this term. I too have grown a great fondness for the Gerber where there was only disappointment before. I cannot choose but if it is woods bummin then it is Schrade and if it is workin it is Gerber.

Aaron, I have R.A. and I've always used a Lansky's kit to sharpen my blades, but I'm going to HAVE to go to a Worksharp Electronic System and I love that Strongarm, do you think a Worksharp Electronic is good for it or should I get the bench stone system like you use? does anyone else out there have thoughts about this? I have only the Gerber.It is very tough,balanced and comfortable but is a bad slicer,needs re profiling of the cutting edge and overall is a craw bar with a cutting edge.
I’ve got too many knives to count, but I have maybe half a dozen gerbers. I don’t have the strongarm, but I do have the tan to, serrated prodigy. It came sharp enough to shave with, really ! Just an excellent design ! Too long of a blade takes away dexterity, but I’m wanting the LMF next. I’d like a bigger around handle though. Being older now, arthritis makes my hand cramp up if the handle isn’t the right size. Schrade is more of a throwaway knife, than the easily replaceable Gerber. Notice I said the same thing two different ways ?

I really love the Gerber but I hate coating and I don't know a way of removing it on the Gerber but on the Schrade its easy that why I think I will go for the Schrade .
You related this right on the money!!! Both nice, wilderness effective, and bush proven knives. I really like several of my Schrades... but at given expenditure. all bells/whistles as a package from factory, how well the packages are thought out === I give a strong nod toward the Gerber Strongarm as a believer plus end-user. 5 stars on overall package blade, handle, & sheath for Strongarm as well as the steel through wet cold to freeze/thaw conditions. Much better 'all-arounder' for what I do here in Alaska.

I would choose the Gerber strongarm. Be a great edc. Most are more likely to find themselves in a survival situation where they live, mostly urban and suburban areas. Chances are they are either being defensive, protecting, break out of, gaining entrance, therefore imo, the Gerber is superior and designed for that. The 42 is strictly a woods blade and would fail in those areas. Im excited to get a strongarm! Then I need a Tops Long Horn Bowie!
I prefer everything about the Schrade except for that recurve belly. If it were straight like the Gerber it would be excellent. Much easier to sharpen correctly without that recurve. Very good review.
Edit to add: I would still pick the Schrade even with the recurve belly.
+Patriot Bill there is a SCHF42D that is exactly the same just without the recurve belly. Schrade had enough complaints about the recurve belly on the SCHF42 that they made the SCHF42D to fix the issue.

To be fair there aren't really any bushcraft knives that come with a decent (ambi) sheath under $100 and they're few and far between sub-200

How long has the Strongarm been made? Looks eerily similar to a knife I recall seeing my Dad carried In Iraq, but that would have been like 15 years ago by now...

What is that bag you’re wearing?
I have the Esee 4 and will be using it for edc and then plan to use it in law enforcement as well. It was more expensive than say either of these two knives but is arguable higher quality. It is a flat grind and I've heard great things about the Esee knives especially the 4 and 5 and their super tough reliable blades that can take a lot of prying and stabbing on. Now the Esee 4 is a flat grind and is 1095 steel, but is arguable higher quality than the gerber above. My question is which one do you think would be a better tactical and stronger blade, the Esee 4 or the gerber above? The gerber is not flat grind and is a 420hc so looking at that I would think it would be stronger than the Esee but I've seen and heard about how the Esee even though it is flat grind and 1095, can hold its own and be just as tough and reliable as say the gerber above. What do you think? Would the Esee and the gerber above be comparable in toughness and reliability because of the quality of the Esee products?

Just looking at the Schrade's recurve gives me sharpening nightmares, I rock the Strongarm, arguably the best fixed blade they make.
On a Second note, did you even use that Schrade? It looks like you really enjoy beating on the Strongarm....

No hate towards Gerber but my Strongarm chipped this week after chopping 5 minutes with it. I have no clue what the heck happened. Nice video. I recently bought a SCHf51 as my first Schrade and now I just need to test it out. I'm completely neutral on this one.
Gerber strongarm, tough like rail spike and almost as sharp. Purpose designed to be cute for kinder, gentler, more well dressed military.
my decision was made right away with 1095 vs 420hc, no comparison 1095 all the way.
Heat treatment is what you should choose, over any steel. Gerbers heat treatment, on the Strongarm, is out of this world. They took a poor stainless steel, and made it work as a carbon steel. It sharpens easy and it holds it's edge, the same or a bit longer than my 1095 blades, which have same hrc! Also it is tough as a carbon steel and it can't rust, as easy as 1095, who also loses it's edge if it sits in a drawer, because it corodes from the humidity of the atmosphere... Many more advantages, on the Strongarm and the reason is the heat treatment, that is nothing less than perfection on this knife.
