You are a sweetheart for this tutorial and showing the measurements clearly in the descrjption. I am having trouble learning the punch board. So for now , I will use your method and the handy corner rounder on the punchboard. And I will subscribe.
I have used envelope makers before (templates, punch boards, etc.), and they always started with a square, so I didn't have to guess on that shape. :) There is no mathmatical formula I can give you on determining the size of the square, because if you change the shape of the card rectangle (such as a rectangle that's the same width but is taller in height), then the formula would change. I have a basic understanding of how big to make the square, and I run a test or two on different sizes to achieve my desired dimensions. This particular template took me three guesses and tests before I got it to the dimensions I wanted.
