- I have been wanting to make a funky DIY live edge coffee table for the longest time and finally found the perfect slab for it! It took some love, but I was able to transform an unfinished wood slab into a gorgeous designer table in a few weekends in the shop! I used Varathane Super Glaze in Aged Brown for the finish, and it was the perfect finish for this table! I’m showing you how I made it all happen in this video!

Talk about someone being super humble!!!! Didn’t feel like a legitimate woodworker till the bow ties.????? Evidently she’s never stepped back and looked at her projects in the past! 100% been a legit woodworker for quite a while. Keep up the great work.
Omg! I’m from India and I’ve been going around explaining people to do this kind of coffee table and no one gets it. Will show them this video-exactly how I pictured. Thanks
Ahh - glad this was helpful!
Hi Sam....awesome looking table all dressed up with his bow ties...great job woodworker...Take care ... Stay safe...
Thank you!
This live edge table is to die for!! Congrats on making your first bowties!!
Sam, I enjoy every of your videos! I felt for you when the slab cracked after all the hard work, but I appreciate so much that you faced the problems and found solutions. I learned a lot from you. Love you!
Ughhh. Thank you! Love you right back!
Sam, this has to be my new favorite video . I love the honest way that you share your journey on each of your projects.
I have to admit that I am still intimidated by bow ties and resin pours, but this video has made me start thinking again about trying both tasks. Thanks for sharing this process and video with us.
Thank you! I’m so happy you loved it! If I can do it, so can you. 💓
One of the best videos on this hobby! Great job on everything.
I don’t know for certain, but I think the underside finish was probably the right move to ensure moisture in the air doesn’t cup that table. Well done Sam!
Thank you!
Awesome job Sam!!!, loved every bit of this table, I thinks the legs are the cherry on top/botton of the cake (well done to your friend). Absolutely stunning Job !!!
This was by far my favorite transformation on your channel thus far. You blow my mind, Chica! Absolutely stunning work!!!!!! 😍🙌
Really!? That makes me so happy! Thank you! 🥰
I Love it, woodworking feeds the soul and your happy dance 💃
Hahah - it does!
It looks SO GOOD!
I loved the bow ties! I've never seen anything like that before, so that was a new one for me. It looks awesome.
And thanks for keeping it real
Thank you! Always!
The grain and insect damage and variation in the wood looks like a very old map of some forgotten realm. Fantastic results! Question for you... do you remove the bark for aesthetics, or because it's to fragile to last?
Thank you! I personally like the aesthetic of a bare edge.
"I LOVE TABLE" It came out so beautiful!
Love the uniqueness of this, what a great piece and such fun ideas all around! :)
So great of you to give it to your Mom. I'd do the same for my daughter if she more than liked it❤. The bow ties are awesome. You did a great job!
Thank you so much! So happy she loves it!
You always do an awesome job! Have a blessed weekend.
Love it! Very durable and well made
Sam that’s one of the nicest slab tables I’ve seen. The legs are stellar. So much nicer then the traditions hair pin legs were used to seeing. Great job!
Thank you so much!
I love that you mentioned you practiced making the bow ties before doing them in the slab.
Wow!!! it looks absolutely amazing!!! i love the bow ties, well done
Thank you!! 🥰
The table looks amazing; so beautiful! And good job on the bow ties.
Thank you! 💓
I'm glad you put finish on the bottom. Without it moisture could penetrate the bottom more than the top they're could have been more wood movement issues.
Awesome project, loved how everything came together with it. Looks like a future project for me to challenge myself with, can't wait, I saved your video for future reference. Great video, keep up the awesome work.
Yess! That makes me so happy! Thank you!
What an incredible cookie slab table! Nice work!
How cool!! I love how this turned out 🥰
Thank you!
Beautiful table. I learned so much. Keep making informative videos!
A beautiful table and you are very generous after all that work 🥰
Haha - thank you! 😊
Turned out gorgeous! Good job.
Thank you!
It just acclimated sam...dont stress...came out beautiful!!!
Thank you!
Awesome Tutorial Sam ! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks, girlfriend! 🥰
It turned out beautifully. Great job love watching your videos. ☺️👍
Thank you! 🥰
Awesome! I'm halfway thorough making a pine cookie table from all urban lumber. I used cherry and walnut for the bowties and cut them in by hand. I was considering what to use for finish, now I'm going to use the super glaze!
Ahh! It was awesome!
Love those bow ties!
Wow! Sam, that looks great!! You did an amazing job and should be very proud of the table. If your parents get tired of it, I'll be happy to take it off of their hands...
Hahah - thank you!
yeah.....that is beautiful. well done!
So many first-time in this video, you go Sam. You have come a long way. Have a great second half of the weekend
Ahhh! Thank you. You too!
KUDOS !! Awesome attention to detail!!
I learned SO much from this video. You gave me the courage now to try the router way of flattening a top of a desk. I had NO idea Rockler had the template for a bow tie. I want to do one too. You are a great teacher and thank you always for sharing mistakes - or in this case surprises and how to fix them. Take care Sam!
YessB this makes me so happy! Thanks for the love!
Same for me ! It seems like an intimidating project that would require a big router etc ... and then I see Sam doing it with the exact same Makita trim router I have. I guess I don't have any excuse and I need to find myself a small slab :)
@@kz.irudimen You can totally do it!
Very nice job. Good pick on the wood!
Thank you!
This table is awesome! Good job!
Thank you!
You are an inspiration, beautiful work.
Thank you for the love!
Live edge is so cool. I gotta get me some live edge slabs to practise.
Live edge pieces are my favorite!
Awesome work of art. 👍👍💕
Thank you!
Beautiful
Nice job Sam! To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the cookie-slab project style. However, I am a HUGE fan of having the courage to tackle task that you were previously afraid to try. Well done! I truly believe thats how we get better as makers and as people, keep it up!
Thanks so much! I love projects with lots of firsts!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. The table turned out beautifully. Later today I'll watch the video how to make the router sledge because I need one.
The bow-tie template looks very handy, but I don't have the illusion something similar is possible to buy here.
Thank you! Couldn’t have done it without those!
Looks great. Oh yea and those Bowties 🔥
Thank you!
Looks verry pretty
😍😍😍 wow beautiful
Thank you! 🥰
I run a sawmill where I cut cookies and regular slabs. The way this worked out can many times be par for the course. These cookies always want to move more than traditional lumber. Mix with that it could have already been under some amount of internal tension cleaning that crack released that tension. Also after it is flat if it will be several days before you can finish both the top and the bottom make sure it has air flow under it not just above it. Always finish both the top and bottom in the same finish. Helps to avoid one side taking on or releaseing more moisture than the other side.
Another great project!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful table.
Thank you!
Interesting timing. Just the day you released the video we were walking through the woods and saw some tree cookie slabs from a tree that the council cut down. So later I went back and got one. Now I just need to make the router jig and make a coffee table with it. Easy 😊. Theoretically 😁Yours look great btw. I have no experience with resin so I will probably just do poly on top.
Really!? This makes me so happy! You’ve got this! 🙌🏼
@@diyhuntress Hi Sam, I have finished the table. Recently, I started to make videos of my projects as well so if you would like to have a look at the table I made you can check it out here czcams.com/video/wt9MV_SsDOg/video.html
Nice job on the build and not giving up. The bow tie inlay is awesome! Keep up the great work as the goal is for us to continue to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼
Thank you for the love and for being awesome!
beautiful
Thank you!
Great job on this and you are a real deal woodworker. Don’t cut yourself short. I live in New York as well and I was wondering where you purchased that slab? I live in queens and noticed your Long Island logo there lol. Thanks in advance!
Good job 👍👌
Thank you!
You go guuuuurl!!!!
Sweet job on the bow ties
Thank you!
Dang this came out after we already finished a live edge table recently but totes wish I'd seen you do it first!
Ahh! I’m sure it turned out to be so awesome though! 🙌🏼
First of all luv your nails second of all amazing job really cool table
Haha - thank you!
Hi ! I love your channel and I learn so much things from your videos ! I wonder, when you have some wood like this, how do you check if there are bugs in it ? How do we know if we can use the wood to make a furniture with it ? How can we treat bad wood ? Thanks ♥
New subscriber from Chicago. Now I’ll grab my coffee and binge watch all your videos 😅🤣
So happy you’re here!
Lovely.
Thank you!
Great job!
Thank you!
I think this is amazing!!! LOVE IT!!! What kind of wood was it???
Thank you! I want to say spalted maple?
@@diyhuntress beautiful!
Wow!
Thanks!
Love your Klee Kai...LOL...
Thank youuu - me too!
Sam - great job and wow, what a nice way to show the “journey”. I am getting into turning and woodworking. My current project is a table from a branch cookie arising from a 300 year old Linden Oak. I have prepped it using a DIY router sled for 1st time. Router left marks visible in stronger light (kind of like a soccer field that gets mowed). How did you handle router marks? I have tried 80, then 60 and hand with 40 grit. I tried a cabinet scraper but i dont have the strength to bend the metal and it just scraped up the surface (which did not please me at all!!). Suggestions?
Loved this and I love legs!
Thank you!
Hi congratulations on the slab fantastic job. Ive started my slab and encountered the the same issue after leveling, a few days later the slab cupped and warped due to rains and high moisture. I'm planning to epoxy both sides of slab to protect against moisture. I wanted to check one year later how your slab is performing, is it moving or relatively stable? Appreciate any information...cheers Vix
Great video - thanks. Think i am ready to tackle mine now. Do you feel the tint is necessary if you are happy with the look of the wood you have?
Sam this thing looked so good!
Next video “live edge bed?”😂😅
Thank you! That would be awesome!
It’s beautiful n so are you!!
ILY. 💓
Hello there. Awesome video. Super informative, and the table looks great.
Question.. does your friend sell those table legs that he made?
great job! should've clamped down either side of the crack might of prevented the lipping
I just bought the twin slab to yours 😄 so this is the perfect video to get me started! Let's talk routers. I noticed you used a palm router to help flatten the slab but then switch to a Dewalt plunge router for the bowties. Could the palm router do both these jobs or do I need the plunge router? They are so $ and for home DIYer I was hoping to get away with the palm but want to do good work the first time and not regret it. Thanks for the tips Sam!
I am so excited for you! Honestly… after doing this project, I added a plunge router to my wishlist. The plunge has a lot more power and it more versatile. It’s also really hard to use the palm router with a router template. Not impossible, but definitely a bit trickier. Can’t wait to see your project!
Awesome project! I remember seeing Laura Kampf do a bowtie table years ago and this reminds me of that.
Thank you! She’s so rad!
Great film, even without the happy dance. : ) Table is gorgeous, those legs really look great. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Hahah - you know it’s a good project when there’s a happy dance. 🙌🏼
Holy smokes Sam!!! Had to pause the video & go throw up!! because... this table is SICK!!! So dope. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
HAHAH. You’re the best. 🙌🏼
Very beautiful awesome work 🌷🌷🌷🌷 your video's always beautiful like you ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
Awesome job. The best part was when you owned the "mistake"....the bow tie journey...and how it ends up being a highlight of the table.
Thank you so much! I love when happy accidents happen. ☺️
Wonderful table. YES, always finish both sides, preferably the same way. You just don't have to make the bottom as beautiful.
A Klee Kai is a cool looking little dog.
So after seeing this video I am encouraged to try my own project
I do have a couple of questions and would appreciate it if someone can help answer them.
Question 1 - so I have sanded the top and the side of the wood cookie slab, do I stain the wood first and then put the coats of Epoxy or do I not put the stain at all and simply put the epoxy?
Question 2 - Also, what is a good epoxy mix to get a glossy finish, and how much time one should wait between coats?
I wish I had used that epoxy on the counters I made for my camper. I had a hell of a time with brush marks and runs using polyurethane.
I’ve never done this before this project and it was awesome!
To help with grain raising during the night and warpage
Good
Thank you!
I see you have two dislikes? Who are these horrible people?????!!!!! This is a great project and you did fantastic!
Ahaha, right!? Thank you!!!
All I have to say is. W O W…..
😍
I just made a similar table top. Now trying to figure out what legs to buy or make for it. Where can you find the black legs like on your table? Or do you have to make them??
Question, I'm doing my first big project. I'm making a desk. The top is pine boards screwed and glued together. I finished staining the entire top. Should I put poly on the underside as well? By the way great job on your project in this video. It looks great.
Hi! I'd recommend finishing as many exposed surfaces as possible to avoid any cupping or warping. Good luck with your project!
@@diyhuntress I did end up doing that just to be safe. The finish is the last part didn't want to rush it. Thank you. I appreciate it.
Wahouuuuuuuu
😍
Great Work as usual Sam! Any way you can share the link for the table legs? I'm doing something similar but i need a dining table height. Thanks in Advance!
Thank you! These are the ones I used!
semiexact.com/products/spider-metal-midcentury-table-legs
@@diyhuntress Thanks Sam! Semi Exact, LOL. love it!
You must seal all sides of a slab like this to prevent cupping or bowing
Beautiful! And thank u for simplifying the process for a newbie like me. What router bit did u use to flatten the table with?
Thank you! Makita trim router.
👍👍👍
😍
Not a fan of the bowties as i feel it takes away from the natural look but hey something had to be dine about that crack. Id of probably looked at putting them in the bottom so they werent as visible and then filled the crack with a clear resin but to each their own. Either way the table is gorgeous and definitly inspires me to either make some side tables from mine or a few large tables like this. We had a huge 40 ft pecan with about a 3-4ft base fall recently and ive thought about trying to turn it into some furniture. So i may have to try something similar.
Great job!!
