- Blog Post w/ Cut List : craftedworkshop.com/blog/live... In this video, I'll show you how to build a live edge coffee table, and how to flatten the live edge slab using a router flattening jig. The process is simple and does a good job of flattening a large slab like this White Oak "cookie" slab.

Johnny, of all the things you do so well, one of them is your organizational skills and how you place links to materials and tools. It is extremely helpful as I built my tools and do my research. THANK YOU.
+James Novaes thanks James! Glad they’re useful, I definitely spend a lot of time getting the video descriptions written out.
I don't think my mind can wrap around how that much dust is created 😯 Love how this table turned out!
+EvanAndKatelyn hah! Thanks!
We're the same!
I like the fact that you tell about your mistakes and letting us know what to think about and how to avoid these issues in the future.
Thanks, glad it’s helpful!
Love how that turned out! I've seen lots of cookie tables with metal legs but this style you went with was a nice choice. Headed to watch your mini split video...doing that in my shop soon.
Nice, thanks Bruce! Was an easy base to knock out and really like the way it looks.
Great job. Really turned out nice - and love the bow tie!
Thanks mama!
Liked your video. We make tables professionally. I just wanted to point out that on your rails you can do what we do and make adjustable sliding sides. This way you can reuse the same rails over and over again without just cutting them down. We adjust ours 4” in total. Cut oblong eyelets with bolts, washers, and wingnut ends. Write the measurements along the base. Do it in 1” increments and you can make up the 1” with the router.
I have a slab from my maple tree. It's around 36" round and 6" thick. I want to do the same thing. Very helpful video.
Thank you! I'm working on one of these right now, that router flattening jig coudl really help.
Looks awesome dude! Router sleds are incredible for how simple the concept and build is for them.
Thanks man!
Hydro is forcing my parents to cut down a nice big oak tree in their front yard. I used to climb it when I was a kid. Can't wait to make some furniture from the trunk and a few limbs. Great video.
Love the table. Great job Johnny!
Thanks Gus!
Another awesome job!! The table came out sweet and talk about a lot of work but in the end it had to be worth it. Really like the bow tie looks great.
+Thom spillane thanks Thom! I’m really pleased with it as well.
Thanks Johnny!
This gives me Inspiration to build a table like this from hurricane Irma debris discarded around my neighborhood.
love your channel dude
Thanks man! That would be really cool. Definitely make sure to let the slab dry out for awhile before building something with it. This slab has been drying for almost two years at this point.
Crafted Workshop thanks for that tip. I have seen wood drying technics in some videos, so I'll have to experiment with that first to come up with some good material to work with.
Another awesome video.
And the table looks amazing.
+The Palleteer thanks!
Awesome build Johnny! I am starting on a slab project this weekend. Thanks for the shoutout happy to be a new patron.
+MikeytheMaker nice man! And thanks for the support!
Fantastic build I love the look of this table
+WoodWorkingVideoWatcher thanks!
Love you his I have 3 oak cookies I need to make something like this .
Yours looks amazing
Cheers
Tim from Wood 4 Nothing
Beautiful work on the table Johnny!
+Donny Carter thanks Donny!
I like how you guise used knee pads after flipping over. A win for learning through your experiences!
No kidding! This project was rough on the body, we were sore the next day for sure.
Love the way the top turned out!
+Derek Conway thanks!
That's a beautiful looking table mate, big job to flatten it but worth that effort, the base idea is perfect especially painted up 👍
+Sumo's Projects thanks a lot!
I have a few of these types of slabs ready to go to do the same thing! this will vid is a life saver.
Nice, have fun!
I just cut a similar sized oak tree down made some slabs for a table or display area. Helpful video!
Looks great! Also really liking the movement you are adding with the slider! I had a couple cedar trees fall in my backyard after Irma, love this idea for some outdoor end tables!
+Make or Break Shop thanks a lot!
I have let some of my woodwork colleagues know about this site [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. I was especially awed in the wake of experiencing the outlines and plans that were incorporated into the bundle. This is the best item for any woodwork devotee and shed manufacturer out there.?
Love the work. I just got myself a fresh cookie, going to let it dry and then will be following your instructions ;)
+No Rocket Science Build nice, have fun!
That was a fun project thanks for the video. I wish I could post a picture of it
Great job man! I have a few of these slabs my buddy gifted me of black walnut. All three of them have checks in them so I think I'm going to use epoxy as a check filler after utilizing a bow tie like you did. Thumbs up!
Thanks a lot! That would look great, epoxy is definitely a great option and will help stabilize the wood.
Awesome job Johnny! 👍
+Fred McIntyre thanks!
Beautiful work!
+Slap Stick thanks!
Just started listening to the Crafted Podcast, love it and the squat 😉
That's awesome, thanks man!
Love it too!
Thanks!
I think something that will go a long way if you're going to be doing lots of these types of projects, make sure your chainsaw is sharp! It will cut flatter cookies and will make the process much easier, although when drying it may still warp.
Beautiful table build!
+Project Woodwork thanks!
Turned out beautiful JB. Hope Ryan bought you a nice dinner at Table.
Thanks Brian!
Incredible build.
+steve walker thanks Steve!
That bit is a beast!
Indeed!
Nice job, guys! Greetings from Russia!
Thanks a lot!
I would like to try it..i dont have the the space u need like you guys..thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful work and I know have an idea what to do with my slab.
+Reginald Taylor nice!
Its an amazing piece!
+Hubbard's Handmade thanks!
Great project! It looks like it turned out to be a lot of work, but well worth it in the end!
+Build Stuff with AJ thanks!
merci pour ton partage
Turned out great. I've been thinking of making one of these myself, so I better hunt down one of those router cutters.
Thanks! Definitely a very helpful bit to have on hand!
Wow when the video started I thought the base frame was black steel. Nice job all around!
Thanks! That’s the look I was going for, amazing what painted wood can look like.
Guys I found a very good website about woodworking that is *TopFineWoodworking. Com* this website contains more then 16000 woodworking plans. Recommended
Amazing! Really good Video 👏🤙
+Netanel Yehezkel thanks!
Fantastic job! That bit is serious if you are taking off 1/2" in each pass!
+Modustrial Maker thanks! Yea, it’s not joke. Zero tear out too, pretty impressive.
Wow that turned out very nice
+Roomies Garage thanks!
great job.....
Good job.
Beautiful table Johnny! Btw, whatever color setting/filter you used for the thumbnail, is way better than the blue hue/tint looking one throughout the video. It looks way more vivid/alive. Just my 2¢. Thanks for the excellent project as always. Loving the slider 📹 shots!
Thanks for the feedback! Still working on dialing in the color settings on this new camera.
It blows my mind how 100+ gallons of sawdust came off! What a cool project :)
Right? I think we ended up turning roughly 50% of the slab into sawdust. It started out at almost 6" thick on one end and we brought it down to less than 3" thick.
That was one big piece of wood. Dust is loose particles with lots of airspace so it is understandable that much physical dust would be made.
I suppose dimension and density can be a surprize sometimes.
That's wicked cool!!!
+Travis Williamson thanks Travis!
I glues up a bench top and flattened it with a router carrier similar to this. It was quite easy but generated a lot of chips. But as I mainly turn I should be used to it.
Nice table mate I've just acquired 6 wood disks in oak that are roughly about the same size may be slightly bigger was thinking of a table and yours is great.
Cheers
Tim from wood 4 nothing.
Thanks, those sound perfect for this kind of thing!
Monster Cookie! Looks great
Indeed, thanks!
Really inspirational thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
that squat make my day....as always superb superb superb
+Ady Unixmoment hah, thanks!
Very nicely done ! thank you :-)
+Mahendra Tiwari thanks!
I've got 2 slabs myself in the garage. I'm dragging my feet on the project because I am not looking forward to the amount of dust. Nice job on yours
Hah, definitely need to prepare yourself for the dust! Thanks.
Great Job man
Thanks a lot!
Nice work!
Thanks!
Fantastico trabajo, tengo el mismo proyecto para realizar pero en un banco para asiento y tiene la mismo grieta y tu solución es genial; gracias
Gracias!
i normally don't like the look of the bow ties in cracks but this one just works and looks so well just because the crack is much bigger
+YoRoyalKnight thanks!
Nice job, man
Thanks!
this is what i want to do
(.......thank you for your help..)
I have a large cookie of an oak tree to turn into a table I am definitely going to borrow the base idea but make it three "legs" not 4. Pocket holes are going to be my joining method now an I also love the black paint finish. Thanks you've sorted out many of my worries.
+Andrew McQuillen great, glad I could help!
A great design. Great explained, thank you! Greetings Mr.Handwerk :)
Thanks!
curious what grit you started and finished with on the belt sander?
I had never noticed before, but a few videos back when you mentioned it, I'm really noticing the "Johnny Squat"! lol
Hah, I seem to do it pretty frequently!
Fill the gaps with resin. Nice job.
obrigado por a legenda
great idea with the router jig. Im gonna try use it to plane the lumber, as I cant afford a planer or jointer haha
Should work great!
What a great job! I like it very much, especially the cutter. Greetings from my channel.
👍👍👍👊
Thanks!
Killer Squat!
PS. Loved the video
Hah, thanks man!
It's so lovely. That jig y'all made was pretty amazing to. Did y'all throw all that sawdust away? It was a lot.
Impressive, great work! what oil did you use for the wood?
Cool job! I just got a similar wooden cookie and i'm going to do something similar. My question is: does the wood have to be seasoned or I can work freshly cut wood?
do you have a bit extender? howd it reach so far?
any tips on stabilizing sapwood? I've got a piece I'm working on that has a live edge with sapwood that I want to keep but parts of the sapwood are pretty weak and come off easily. I don't want to have to keep removing material or have it removed unevenly or in weird places. Is there any way around this?
nice
Good job... and so much dust.
+American woodworking tricks / Stolarskie Triki hah, yup! Thanks.
Perfeito!!
Thanks!
Sweet looking coffee table! 🤘👍
Thanks Heath!
I didn`t intend to use this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed after trying it. It never dissatisfied me in my desire to have more information about the art of wood working. I discovered several topics such as wood types as well as designing your workshop..
I need a friend like Ryan. good job though. I'll be making one soon. How's this thing holding up
I’m actually building one of these now. I’m surprised that only two coats of Danish oil did the trick, as the research I’m doing describes the end grain as insatiably absorbing. Is it a low level of finish and protection, or is it close to a furniture grade finish? I’m considering sealing it with shellac before applying an oil finish, and would love your thoughts on that. Really nice build!
Nice. I like to leave the bark on.
Thanks! We would have if the bark were in better shape.
Tnx mate
Thanks!
Great build! Wonder if the router bit you used is the same one Nick Offerman suggested in his Fine Woodworking article two - or so - years ago? Thanks!!
Not sure, but it worked like a charm! Thanks Stanley.
The camera slider shots look incredible. I must have missed it if you said, but what kind of slider did you get?
+Epiphany Woodworks thanks! It’s the Edelkrone SliderPlus with Action module.
Router Flattening = Cool
+Scott Special hah, thanks!
Really cool project lovely slab but would have liked to have seen proper joinery in the base! But looks great
Nicely done! How much does the finished table weigh?
Not sure exactly, but it's definitely got some heft to it!
Didnt you get mold on the cookie? Thankyou for answering. Danny from Holland
No mold!
great video, what adaptor do you use to onnect the festool hose to the kreg jig? thanks
Thanks! It's this adaptor, works perfectly : amzn.to/2wZ6gfY
I've seen others fill all of the small cracks and crevices with epoxy first, then go over the slab once more on the router sled before applying some sort of varnish. Do you recommend this?
Sure, that would work just fine!
How heavy did the table turnout? That’s my main concern for my slab (~115lbs)
Great video! I’m going to be trying this out in a few weeks. What router would you recommend? I don’t have one yet but I’m looking to buy it once and not upgrade for a few years. Any advice is appreciated.
Nice! I would get one with a good plunge base and plenty of power. Bosch makes a great router for sure.
Mate!! Great work, love all the videos. I’m about to start this project. I’ve had the cookies for 3 month now. Is that long enough for the wood to able to be worked on? Was the cookie you used freshly cut? Thanks!!
Thanks a lot! Really depends on a lot of factors as far as whether your slab is ready, including how it was stored, how thick it is, etc. This one was worked on about 10 months after it had been cut. Best way to know for sure is with a moisture meter.
Crafted Workshop thanks mate' I'll give it a year or so then as the Slab is about three times thicker than the one you worked on. Cheers!!
Wow! Good luck, sounds like a cool piece.
how long did you let the wood dry before starting?
