In this episode I restore a yellowed retro joystick. The model is QuickShot Python 5. The controller is yellowed and even though it was sold as working to me on ebay, it turned out to be drifting to right.
I started with opening the controller and noticed I need to desolder the the wires to get all the pieces apart. After desoldering I cleaned the parts in watery soap and put them into my retrobrighting box to remove the yellowing.
Here is my tutorial to build it: • Making the Ultimate Re...
Here is my tutorial about the retrobrighting process: • How to remove yellowin...
I cleaned the board with isopropyl alcohol. However I did not remove the rubber pads for the buttons. This was because those can be very fragile and it would be extremely hard to find a replacement. But as you can see in the end, I still had to remove them and clean the contacts for the buttons.
To connect the joystick to a modern PC with new Windows such as Windows 10, you need a special adapter. I used this Rockfire adapter for gameport to USB (amzn.to/3wqtN9X). I have Windows 10 Home version 20H2, in this video in case someone has issues with this method. Just a Gameport to USB cable doesn't usually work.
Thank you for watching!

Hi! :D
Hey!
Ads? Good for you, man. I have zero problem with ads on good channels. Get you some $$.
What brand of gloves are those? Do they smell like raw, powdery rubber? I need good gloves!
Hey odd tinkering you restored a ps1 slim ps2 slim and PlayStation portable now do ps3 them do ps4 and then ps5
Watching some old computer and gaming technology getting a second chance to live never, really never gets old.
true
Quite literally never gets old to be fair haha.
Please never use a comma again.
People who watch other things: HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Yeah
“Ancient gamer hand sweat” is my new catchphrase.

@@anotherneko it says under that "translate to English"
10:56 that wire you snipped is a cold solder joint. Requires flux and a longer application of heat to get the solder to flow properly.
It also looked like two of the pins were bridged.
First of all, he bridges a couple of pins, and second of all the solder indeed didn't flow well enough to make the contact. Horrific soldering. I'm not used to seeing that on this channel. I wonder if he's just messing with us.
@@MarinusMakesStuff pretty horrific soldering, for sure!
Soldering has been his weakest area. But had improved until this one. That was rough to watch. Soldering and welding are arts that need lots of practice. And they need some more.
Was looking for this. There were at least two bridges and one cold joint. I wonder if he fixed it off camera since it seemed to work at the end of the vid
Just wanted to drop a comment to give some love to the ducktor. Seeing that lil guy show up in your vids always makes me crack a smile
All hail ducktor
Quick shot serial joysticks were really responsive during their time, I would play some mame arcade games with this such as Afternurner or Space Harrier. Great repair video btw, you did a stellar job!
Afterburner FTW!
@@wtbeecher Amen brother!
The ducktor is always a nice addition!
"That's some ancient gamers hand sweat".

Reminds me of the 360 controllers. So much gunk in the seams hahah

Absorb the energy of the ancient gamers...
10:43 blue and second white appear to be bridged. finished the episode and I guess it wasn't a problem which is good.
great video!
I was gonna comment that! I presume he fixed it, as there are several bridged connections by the looks
Came here to say this.
same
I mean I assume it never was a problem, the thing was clearly heavily used and I don't think it got exposed to "melt the solder" heat so it likey was functional regardless
Or those solder joints in 10:56.
Had one of these and would play X Wing and Tie Fighter nonstop. Excellent joystick. Torpedoes top button/Guns on the trigger always.
I honestly was expecting him to play Tie Fighter 😆 that game ruined my Sidewinder joystick back in the day…
@@endarios8060 Absolutely. The suctions would snap off all the time.
Yeah same, it did the job very well, loved all the X-Wing games, Tie Fighter was best 🙂
What do you do with the things you have restored? Do you keep and use them? If so, a tour of all the stuff you've restored over the years would really be cool!
I think he resells them as refurbished
I agree. It would be cool to see if he keeps them. I'm sure he keeps some but maybe sells extra
I'm gonna say that there was a missed opportunity to use "Odd Tankering" with this sponsorship
I'm just fascinated of how hard whoever played the heck out of this joystick controller.
If they used it a lot they must have been very delicate, considering the excellent conditions the rubber pads are in. It never happened to me to find an old joystick with the rubber pads in such good state.
There's at least a couple of busted ones.
There's a certain beauty in this ancient hardware with these white colours and simpler electronics.
The controller design looks pretty intentional to me. "eventually it breaks and loses contact" so that the gamer needs a new controller and to give them more money. :p
makes sense
I had a black one of these for my Commodore 64 back in the early 80's. I preferred the shorter ball top Quickshot
They were digital though, weren't they? The clicky type. Had one on my Amiga.
@@brick6347 micro switches. But they felt so satisfying
Ahhh the memories... I used to have one of these on a Commodore 64. I still remember the Auto fire tab being such a massive cheat on some of those retro games.
Still got my 64 with all the games and joysticks think I might hook it up and play it.👍😂Helicopter gunship was my favourite.
@@lablackzed did you ever play Impossible Mission on C64?
@@PeteDriver530 Probably I play so many game's over the years maybe I still have it in my collection.👍

y'know, my day was rubbish for the most part, and then OddTinkering uploaded a video, and now... now it's a lot better.

Same watching this while brushing my teeth to go to the dentist. I HATE the dentist.
Day restoration
It never fails, no matter what’s going on, no matter if I’m sad or down or just had a bad day, that duck always makes me smile 😊 thank you for that!
“Functional”, oh boy, who hasn’t experienced that result from EBay?
Fantastic job by you and the Ducktor!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I did, but it never happened to me to find the rubber pads in such good conditon whenever I bought old joysticks from ebay.
My brother and I were each given black ones for Christmas. They had an ‘Autofire’ switch at the back. I was so stoked that Christmas morning!
4:57 Dr Octopus is giving a -tentacle- hand to help out
Hey Odd Tinkering, look at getting yourself a Edsyn AS196 desoldering tool. It would probably be much quicker than trying to use solder braid when desoldering wires and through-hole component leads.
12:25 That's nice you thought about it and showed us also
The fact that you play the Pz. II without APCR deserves a like alone. Chad.
Low tier players don't even know what that is. And it's probably better.
It's low tier, who uses gold ammo in such setting anyway?

You'll be surprised.
When the first screw falls into the ice cube tray around 0:50 mark it sounds a bit like Quagmire's "giggity"
Beautiful work as always, and since I like technology so much, seeing electronics come back to life never got old.
Oh man, I love your calming type of videos. I'm in the hospital now and need to calm down, your videos are perfect for that
This Joystick remember me the good old times when gaming was just that simple. You did not need 10 or more buttons to just play a game and have a lot of fun. So long ago!
Fnf players in shock
Hello Mr duck!
Also Idk why but Ive always loved your restoration videos despite...not being a large fan of asmr content
Idk why this type of stuff is satisfying
Thank you for resorting a weapon of the ancient gamers
I used to have the same one when I was little. Used it to play Aces over Europe ^-^
The rubber duck doctor made my day, thank you
You should seriously add the rubber duck to your merch lol
I had the same joystick for my C64. Was Black and Red though. Happy memories.
I have been waiting for you to update for forever!!! jeez dude what takes so long!
Had that joy stick for my Amiga 300. Happy times
I really enjoy watching your videos! They are so calming and relaxing. Total silence except the sound of the screwdriver turning the screw out of the plastic. Plus it's also nice to see all these things get a new lease on life, thanks for posting 🙂!
"Ancient gamer's hand sweat"... lmao 😂🤣🤣 idk why but I laughed so much at that. You have a way with words Odd. 👍😂
I had one of these for my 486.
BACK WHEN THINGS DIDN’T SUCK!
I have had a joystick similar to that for a long time and I have not been able to test it by the input, I did not know that there was a USB adapter.
There’s something very therapeutic about watching your videos. . .
ROFL SponsorBlock jumped right to 16:06, I love this AddOn.
Driving a tank with joystick gives a real like simulation!
I got so many head tingles from this
I had one, nothing was as satisfying as flying around the screen blasting star fighters in Star Wars: Tie Fighter
Kyllä tätä kattoessa ahdistus helpottaa. Kiitos videoista ♥
Another awesome restoration video! 👍 I think this is my first time ever seeing a gaming Joystick being restored on your channel! 🙂 It really is neat watching those 2 halves of the Stick come apart! 😃
never seen someone work so hard to restore a quickshot. we used to hate these back in the day.
Loved playing Outrun on my granddad’s Amstrad with one of these.
I used to have an Amiga 500 with the Quick Shot Python 1 Joystick... Words cannot describe how much I miss those... (Saying this as an PS 5 owner)
At first these project appear simple until the screwdriver comes out, revealing impressive engineering. Alway fascinating.
9:12 sounded like a sneeze lmao
So good and relaxing really wanted to refine this channel
Had one of those in the early '90s as a kid, except mine was dark grey, so a little more resistant to obvious dirt!
Great to watch this after a long day. Thanks man
I love he incorporates the "ducktor"
Quickshot joysticks were absolutely brilliant! I had two Quickshot II Turbo joysticks i used with my C64 and Amiga 500, 2000, 3000 and Amiga 4000.
Every single time it’s bath time for the parts when he’s dunking it in he’s like “Alright hold take a break for me to dunk” like he can’t just continue brushing while dunking
That thumbnail without my glasses LOL
I went through loads of these Quick Shot Python joysticks when I was a kid playing games on the Amiga. They took some hefty use! lol
Was hungry when I started the video. Saw the dirt and grime, now the hunger is gone. Great 😅👍
This black 4 clamp grabby arm thingy, how is it called? I need that in my life 😍
Awesome cleaning
Quickshot in its many forms was my joystick of choice.
Amazing job my friend congratulations
I really love your vids, friend!!!! Your captions are funny and I dig how you can talk to us without actually talking lol
Just a beautiful job buddy 👍
Beautiful restoration Odd well done
0:52 bro that a good idea , to use Ice makers to separate parts and all (mind blown)
"translated from Duckish" you get a subscribe just for that LMAO love the Ducktor
If you ever, God forbid, forget to brush the Ducktor's beak, I think the whole universe would crumble.
What memories...i had this for my Amiga 500, F18 interceptor was the best , technically it's nothing now but was all then.
4:55 Doc Ock vs. Circuit Bord!
Am i weird for Falling asleep to your videos? Its like a not gross ASMR and fascinating to watch at the same time
beating my headache i took big cup of tea, turning on youtube... Voila! It will be a good evening!
Crazy to see this. A couple of months ago a box of my retro controllers got full of water after a flood in my basement, and i restored all of them after being inspired by your videos. Funny thing is, i also own one of these Quickshots Python-joysticks, but i own a black one used on a Mega Drive. I actually got it to work again after opening, drying, cleaning and putting it back together. I almost never ever see one of these so seeing this pop up in my recommended was a nice surprise. Thanks for your videos, i've learned a lot from you over the years.
Wow, you never cease to amaze me with these restoration videos! Never been much into joysticks personally, but it's cool to see one made the same year that I was born, very nicely done, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you'll restore next!
That is one old joystick! Great job!
These videos are the perfect asmr to fall asleep to
Legend has it that if you eat the ancient gamer's hand sweat you absorb their powers
would be pretty insane, considering how hard and unforgiving old games were
I like the flex with the Odd Tinkering vice
I've never gagged at one of your videos until you said "ancient gamer hand sweat".
Great video as always.
Nice work. You have a lot respect to the old technology.
Nice, the DuckTor is back. And also nice to see Odd Tinkering is speaking fluent duckish ;)
What a wonderful video of restoration 🤝👏🤝👏🤝👏
Hand sweat... you make everything sound 🤯 lol
Great job as always!
I'm very sure that my dad had the black and red version of this and we used it to play a lot of old computer games in the mid to late 90s. Gooooood memories!
Had one of these with my amiga. Kick off 2 was ace with this 👌
the famous ductor is amazing!
Number 2 Philips. Wires needed extra flux when soldering. Turn screw counter-clockwise first to prevent cutting new threads in plastic. Really enjoy the videos, but it's frustrating when I see the wrong tool or technique being used.
I get so happy whenever Ducktor gets on screen.
Like always a great Restoration, I have one lying around in the back of the cupboard I played a lot, I will motivate myself to clean it
Really nice idea and of course restoration! 👏👏👏 ❤️🦆
Window cleaner with ammonia and then a final pass with alcohol is the better way to clean the cords. Just a tip from someone that has pulled many cords from a scrap facility.
I have a gameport to USB adapter that I bought at Radio Shack about 20 years ago. Actually, I have three of them. I bought the first one, then decided that I should buy a couple backups (I'm not sure why now). The later ones were a slight different style, but otherwise functionally identical. They all have switches on them for two types of joystick, gamepad and racing wheel.
In my experience, only simple, two axis, two button joysticks work. I've tried ones with hat switches, multiple buttons, etc. Anything even slightly fancy doesn't work, at least on the adapter I have.
I had a QuickShot for the NES. The suction cups were useless because I was never playing at a table or other smooth surface for them to stick to.
Masterpiece. Excellent video. I'm already your subscriber.
Ducktor should really be your channel symbol at this point.
Wow, that hit me right in the nostalgia. I had two of those, one white one black.
