- Today we dive into legendary Swedish pop group ABBA. "Summer Night City" was written as a tribute to their hometown of Stockholm. It is the group's second non-album single, released September 6, 1978. I t was recorded during the sessions of the group's upcoming VOULEZ-VOUS album, but was eventually not included.
What Do Ya'll Think !? - Hudba
Actually when they played this live ithey turned the original disco version into a fire rock number with a prog rock slow intro and an explosive rock outro.(Live Wembley 1979)..
The More ABBA the better! Endless rabbit hole of surprises! A one of a kind band that transcends ages, generations and cultures! They did around 125 songs so enough to discover
How could anyone tire of looking at Agnetha.
Abba's song writing was leagues above everything else...............................and still is.
I think is in the same league as The Beatles and no other band has been able to top any of them
This version (the original) never left Benny and Björn satisfied... 😮
The live version, at Wembley Arena '79, is really impeccable... with a slow introduction and a spectacular ending (without fade out, of course😊).
It would be great if you could review it...
Great job, Quint & John ✌️.
Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱🤗👍
I absolutely second that and tried to post the link to this electric performance to our dear friends here but utube kept deleting it.

Maybe it's enough to say: Summer Night City from ABBA in concert...
❤️🇨🇱🤗👍
Put any ABBA track on here in the U.K.at a party, and watch them start dancing…..👍🇮🇲👌
I got a little disapointed since i thought i would be lucky to enjoy the original uncut version with the EPIC slow intro. But Thank u for doing Abba.I liked very much your reactions and positive perceptions.
lol,Well despite this being a disco song Abba were deff, not a disco band since they've recorded only about 10 disco songs out of all their 9 studio albums+standalone singles, and deff a global pop music phenomenon in pop culture even after 40 years of absence from discographic activity.Hugs
2:47 Agnetha glows like a platinum sun in the darkness here and Frida is steamy Hot in this late '70s American curly hairstyle and those legs.
Always
Best
Band
Actually
Brilliant 😍
Great song and great reaction.. i love this song even though for some reason Benny and Bjorn didn't. It is a tribute to their beloved Stockholm. Love all the beautiful views of the city in this video. It has been said the group was um shall we say more than "tipsy" while filming this lol. The boat the girls were on was actually Benny's boat he kept in the harbor near his and Fridas home. Looking forward to some more ABBA. Their song "if it wasn't for the nights " the live version from Japan tv is another great dancing song and their outfits are great. Frida looks like a red headed wonder woman lol
So nice to see you again with another reaction to ABBA songs
"Summer night city" (1978)
was composed to pay homage to its capital city Stockholm (in Sweden)
hence are the images of this and all the official ABBA videos
(only exception: "Chiquitita" in the Alpine area of Switzerland)
I think this video was shot in 'real time'
I mean, the ABBA members went to a disco night, including the next sunrise
(the couple of the brunette Frida & Benny were the most nocturnal and energetic,
in contrast to the more familiar of blonde Agnetha & Björn)
the musical rhythm is influenced by the success of BEE GEES with the soundtrack of the film "Saturday Night Fever"
Unfortunately they did not include it in the compilation album "ABBA Gold" (1992)
and its composers Björn & Benny were never satisfied with the final arrangement,
they had other options, live they did it with a slow intro and a vibrant ending
it was their last #1 in Sweden (until the current comeback in 2021 with "Don't shut me down")
and #5 in England, among other charts
ABBA was a very versatile group, although its essence and musical identity is Europop,
that year they experimented with disco sound with this song and their next album "Voulez Vous"
I hope to see you soon with more ABBA songs
My best regards from

Best Regards from Texas 😎❤️ Great Comments as always eduardooscar309 ... thx for always supporting our little show ✌🏼
This is like, a movie theme.. I think its genious, very haunting and sublime. Especially the swirling backgroound part, starting at 3:00. But you didnt notice, since you talked to each other then :)
Our bad ... 😳 we gotta chill on our chatter some , thoughts come in your head ya know ❤️
The hook is fairly subtle. It's the guitar bit at and of the chorus which becomes more orchestral each time.
What you see in the end, is the summerlight in Stockholm. Sun goes down at 23.00 Abba live forever ❤
Love the energy of this song
ABBA response to Saturday Night Fever; their first disco title. Unfortunately here in the short single+radio version without the brilliant intro (see Wembley Live 1979 or Dick Cavett 1981). Voulez Vous, Gimme-Gimme (not top 1 at the time; only became top with the Internet and later generations) and Lay Your Love On Me were other disco hits, never quite got the recognition they had hoped for, but today these songs are in London Voyage concerts and are loved by young people.
Love it 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
🔥
There's a longer version of this song with an extra intro. They cut the intro on the original release because they wanted to start the song with a 'bang'. It wasn't until the mid 90s that they released the uncut version.
Анни-Фрид великолепна!!!
This song was scheduled to be released as a single in the USA in autumn 1978, but when ABBA couldn't promise that an album would follow by the end of that year, their American company Atlantic, cancelled the release.
Hey guys 8 track cassetes had really better powerful sound compared to the 'pocket' walkman cassetes. i do recall some of them by other artists that my parents had.I had barely cought them, it was around the time they were about to completely vanish from the market around '75 or '76/'77 maybe.
Their ambivalence about the record has surfaced occasionally in interviews where Benny has said "we shouldn't have released that one", and Bjorn called the recording "really lousy
They might have reconsidered.Actually they were never satisfied with the mix.Rumour has it they did almost 50 different mixes with M.B.Tretow back then.Song was featured in their 1979 GHVol.2 no1album in 'More Gold' collection and even in the Voyage gigs not to mention it being featured in their '79/'80 tour.Imo it should have been in the original VV album instead of 'Lovers' which was weaker compared to SNC.
Bjorn has been quoted as saying he thought this was one of their weaker singles.
Yes but despite this they used this song in their 1979 tour/1980 Japan tour and 1981 Dick Cavet live show.Seems it worked so fine live as a rock number ,the full unedited version.
@@christianoazzuro6711 and it's one of the tracks in the Voyage Digital Concert in London.
@@terrykemp1876 Oh yes indeed! It was the first VOYAGE trailer ever revealed btw!Had forgotten this.
I prefer the reacts suggested by dad. Abba, always. And music from the 70, 80 and 90. Kisses from Portugal. Ana
Hello to you Ana in Portugal 😎❤️ Kisses from Dallas ... Thx for watching the show!
John asks "is it just me or is it just the women singing?"
Duh! yeah it is just you John
cos all Four of Abba are singing as anyone can see in the video
- Björn even has his own solo vocal section (twice) & his face is clearly seen singing
Pay attention, John!
*also the song was recorded & released in 1978
The women of ABBA sang 99% of the songs. The guys were usually just background.
Try the visitors
All four are singing, my friend on the left (with the glasses)
Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid
A-B-B-A
Summer Night City was recorded early in 1978, released later that summer
yeah, some great comments but a preoccupation with 70s clothes seen in the video which is unnecessary in a musical assessment, surely
i mean, it's a clip made in the 70s so of course they're wearing 70s clothes
Duh!
(in the 70s, you yourself were wearing 70s clothes too)
Much more interesting would be your musical perspective, my friend: production, songwriting, arrangement, vocals, structure, instrumentation etc
....rather than 70s trousers
Have seen many of your Abba reactions before, Sir
& always great! always intelligent, sensitive, open-hearted
but jettison the Sidekick In Specs!
(just meet him later in a bar for a beer & a natter)
Benny cracks me up. His enthusiasm is so not there.
Background music sucks
Oh geez, throw out some more positive vibes ✌🏼😎❤️ it's peppy
