  • In this episode we continue with our sail across to Sardinia where we lose a few of our key electronics. The weather turns nasty and boy are we happy to arrive in Sardinia. Come along as we sail to some spectacular places along Southern Sardinia and enter into gelato heaven.

    Salt water and electronics rarely mix and the ocean is not friendly with our gear. Things are constantly breaking or rusting apart. These are a few of the things we hope to get to keep bringing Sailing Zephyr to you.

    HI again, a tip for anchoring: Always take out depth times 5 in chain length (it looks much less on the video), and never anchor in less than 3 times the depth of the ships draft (should be some 6 or 7 m for your Benneteau and looks much less as well on the video). There may come waves and already 2 meters wave hight is enough to smash the ground. In the mediterranean there are ferries that go on high speed and the make up to 6 m bow wave and if you are not familiar with their routes, be carefull... we want to watch you sailing and experiencing and not sinking ;-)

      Thanks Michael for all the tips! Anchoring is definitely a day to day thing we do....so we def want to make sure we do it right and like you said not lose the boat!

    When motoring in rough, lumpy seaway it's better to have your mainsail up ( even reduced size) to use as a stabiliser. It will help with mitigation of the pendulum effect from the keel. Just sheet it on tight on your centre line.

      Thanks for the advice Jack. We will definitely give it a go.

    If you're catching fish then make sure you gut it straight away, that way you minimise the risk of parasites moving from intestines to flesh. We catch a lot of mackerel here in Scotland and I've seen them crawling with all kinds of parasites 2 hours after having been caught. We always gut straight away now and have never had any issues since.

    Thanks for diving your anchor and filming it. Doesn't seem like many show their anchor with a good set.

    Why don’t you put the main sail up when motorsailing? It prevents the boat from rolling. Just a tip from a German sailor.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  Před 3 lety

      We always try when motoring. In some cases if the wind isn't strong enough and the seas are rolling, the main just keeps slamming. So we have to bring it in. Any ideas how we can stop this? cheers 👍

    • @ops7750
      @ops7750 Před 3 lety

      Trim the sail as flat as possible! A bit of slamming shouldn’t hurt a sturdy touring sail.

    • @ops7750
      @ops7750 Před 3 lety

      Or: put in one or two reefs and trim it flat.

    Sorry guys I'm little confused why do you need an instrument to tell you where its coming from ?
    In my seven years of sailing I never had one

      Helps with wind speed and apparent wind for reefing.
