    The best way to deal with fine sand is to keep a bottle of baby powder in a zip lock bag on your tender. The baby powder will remove all sand from your legs and feet before stepping onboard.

      Good tip... do you not end up with white footprints though?!

    • @petersmith8134
      @petersmith8134 Před rokem +2

      @@svfairisle Once the baby powder absorbs the moisture from the sand which takes seconds, the sand and powder will brush off easy with a soft brush or you can wipe off with a towel. Should not be any footprints.

    Currently sailing north east Sardinia, it is a stunning Island with incredible beaches. The winds are unpredictable though, got caught is a serious storm last August, be ready for anything the forecast is unreliable. Well worth the effort though.

    BTW, one reason the birds fly so low to the water is an aerodynamic effect known as "ground effect". When a bird or airplane flies withing one-half wingspan of the ground/water, the compression of the air underneath the wing causes the induced drag (i.e., the drag induced by the airflow over the wing) to be cut dramatically. For a bird, this means they need to spend a lot less energy to stay in the air.

    I think the "1/2 hour up the mountain" was timed by a mountain climber going straight up the mountain! The summit (prison building) was so high up. No wonder you two are in such good shape! Mountain climbing will burn those calories off quickly!

    Have you looked at anti-Roll devices? Atticus got one. You may be able to make them yourself though.
    A box about 30 cm deep and perhaps 1 meter square with say four louvered flaps in the bottom. Make it so that the flaps are easily removed and the box edges are foldable for storage.
    One of this size would hold 300 kg of water and that would be a good "sea anchor" effect.
    I've seen a couple of other mono hull channels use these. I don't know how good they work but the idea seems good.
    Nice hike to the castle! Good exploration.
    I like your music choices too.
    And... I LOVE your boat! Watched the boat tour vid and did a bit of research on these. Very nice live-aboard cruising boats.

      @svfairisle  Před rokem

      I’ve looked into ‘flipper stoppers’ years ago & came to the conclusion they’re more trouble than they’re worth. Fiddly to fit, difficult to store and usually ended up making all sorts of banging ‘ creaking noises that became worse than the roll! I think designs may have improved, certainly for storage, maybe it’s worth another look. I could certainly have done with something last night, very folly and a packed anchorage so no chance of using a stern anchor.

      We went through the straits on the way into the Med 3 years ago and very much enjoyed it. We showed the swordfish boats in that episode which are amazing. So we decided to do the South coast of Sicily this time, but I actually wish we had gone up the East coast of Sardinia and spent some time around the area you are starting. The Maddelena Islands are supposed to be stunning, and we would have liked to have gone across to Bonnifacio

    Question about why you have to check in if Sardinia and Sicily are both part of Italy?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Před rokem +1

      Well in normal circumstances you would just check into and Schengen zone country and be good for the whole zone so it's not about individual countries, But so far having been through Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Menorca and now Majorca no one has stamped our passports, just our crew list. This is great for us as the Schengen clock is not ticking but it really means if we do go from an Italian island to a Spanish one we should get the crew list stamped (or the passport if they insist on it). I have to say though the immigration guys don't seem to be bothered to do any of this stuff!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Před rokem

      @@craigsimmons4514 So many good options! Depends on how long you have of course and when you are doing it, for instance if you are hitting Greece mid summer I would go South around the capes not through the Corinth canal. There’s lovely places like Monemvasia down South and you won’t have the hordes of charter boats you’ll find in the Ionian, although the Levkas - Meganissi area is an amazing sailing playground off season. Then cut across the foot of Italy and go through the Messina strait, Aeolian isles, N Sicily then Sardinia. I would do the East coast not west as we’ve just done in fact if short on time & the wind right cut from Sicily to as far N in Sardinia as you can to the Madeleine islands, Corsica if you have time, at least make a stop eat Bonifacio ( I wish we had done those two things) Then across to Mahon and the fantastic N coast of Menorca, then Mallorca - if you enjoy stern tying in the little calas then the E coast, if you feel you have to go to Soller then the West & onward…

      @@svfairisle Thanks for the advice. I hope to be doing the trip late summer - starting out from Turkey last week July or first week August. So, was thinking that things will be getting quieter by the time I hit the Ionian. Due to Brexit, will only have 90 days to get to Spain.

      @@reversingentropy No I’m working on the test video for the splash and I’ll give an update to the Egg. There’s a direct comparison in the video actually as the open sequence is on the Splash and the castle the Egg. It’s a bit unfair in the Egg actually as I made a mistake. My phone ran out of battery so I used Judys and all the settings are stored in the app on the phone not the drone which is strange. I nearly crashed it when I took off as the joysticks were transposed. I should have realised when I found that out that all the other settings were screwed. So it only recorded 720p and everything in auto. The colour looked very muddy

Flying is the easy part, landing on the other hand is terrifying. Im trying to refit another sailboat in 30 days (video in the near future) and this one is much bigger so hopefully i can find a way to land an fpv somewhere. Im still to find cruising fpv footage from a sailing sailboat. Anyway im rambeling sorry.
