i'm really liking these "the problems with" videos. i didn't play through the early stages of pokemon so it's very nice to see what was problematic and why back then.

you summed it up well, i agree with everything... bombtar is really the one where it feels like you have to just hope they don't pop off too hard. i wonder if someone will come along with a new tech against it

I think in general there is a not a whole lot you can do to try and hard counter it. Even in RS-PK with all of the added tools it's still a tier 1 deck.

Weird thing about Bombtar is that japanese players dont even play it like we do... and its still a tier1 deck in Japan.
We discard energies and build Tyranitars, waiting for the right turn to explode + admin + pow , etc.
They just built a Tyranitar and star spinning tailing. If you dont do anything, you lose in 3 or 4 turns. And if you do do anything, they just explode and bury you even deeper.
      Crazy stuff.

@@calds6705 For such a focused Pokemon line its crazy how many options the deck has and a lot of routes it can take.

@thelostzonetcg You mention that nearly unwinnable matchups are a problem in 2006, such as with Lugia Blastoise Steelix versus Mew Manectric. You said something similar for Medicham versus Nidoqueen in 2005. Are these matchups worse than Blissey's 20-80 win rate against Torterra in 2008, and are there other really hard matchups in 2008?

Funny thing i'm playing this format right now and getting content to this format in 2022 is kinda destiny thanks!

I think your point about being heavily match up based is on point. While there are some of the best games you could ever play in 2006, there are a bunch of 80/90 blow outs where's there's just no shot. I do feel like the cards exist to balance out match ups (e.g. Flariados in theory can run Crystal Shard to blow up Dark Dragonite) but the format is so tech unfriendly it doesn't really matter.

if you have to create a format, wich sets would you choose?

Honestly every block is going to have good and bad, thats where the challenges and excitement with deck building come in.

I would argue that Arcanine ex is also a problematic deck with modern builds. Not because it's broken but because it so often is a matter of drawing better than Arcanine hoping you get your Scrambles and they miss their energy drops/ER2's.
It's ability to string OHKO can be oppressive. Most of the time, it's impossible to match its offense and ability to tank makes that task even harder. While Ludicargo, LBS and Bombtar provide somewhat of a check, there's very little in B tier that can actually feed one-prize attackers into it reliably. Again, not broken but it rides the line between being a game and an exercise in futility.
I think if Flame Swirl was 90, it'd be easier to play around, especially with Heal Energy. Otherwise, you're talking about playing 4 Heal Energies and still hoping to draw well. I think it's an example of a T2 deck that carries a little too much strength in all stages of the game rather than being predominantly early-mid like most T2 ex's.

LBS vs Mewtrick is 50 50 without Celebi ex.
And 60 40 in favour of LBS with Celebi

@@thelostzonetcg Latios Star 1hko Mew or Manectric, and it has psychic resistance.
Even if they wanna MegaShot it on your bench, they break the lock and you can just Retriever and Holon mentor it back, while breaking the battle frontier lock (and if you have Chimecho delta you even get a water energy back while mentoring).
Not even mentioning Steelix, which will take at least 3 or 4 prizes before being knocked out.
Even Jason mentioned all of this in his 06report calling the match a 50/50.

@@calds6705 So I'm going to give a "cop out" reply. I think your give a very generic answer to a very complex question with a lot of factors. Are you talking Jason's Mewtric or a more modern day take, are you talking a general LBS deck or Fulops new secret list? Are you playing against a random player or Chuck? Things like Pow, ER2, Cursed Stone, LunaLock counts all heavily impact this match up. Probably the largest factor is going 1st/2nd and if MewTric gets a turn 2 discount. If they get a turn 2 discount and you prize or can't find the single Wartortle it's probably game over reguardless of all else.
Fully agree Steelix EX is the key to winning that game, but beyond that 2006 seems to be the year where people have the strongest and most personnel opinions on things. I mean heck look at the comment section on that LBS video. Not hear to debate the match ups, I'll just say I wish I had your optimism with it :)
