  • In this video I show you how to reset the Oil or Inspection service after performing the service needed. Also on this X3 with the N51 and N52 Engine there is no oil dipstick. I show you how to check the oil level electronically through the vehicle instrument cluster.

    Thanks for the video. I checked the oil in my X3 about a month ago pervthe instructions provided and it worked! I tried checking it today and it simply tried to set the clock? Any recommendations? Am I not letting the engine warm up enough? Thanks

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Před 9 lety

      +Ray Giroux I would let it warm up first and then do the check. But it may be that you accidentally hit the wrong buttons. That usually will bring up the clock. Let me know if you still have trouble and I will try to help.

    Thanks for the video, My 08 X3 has had a oil sending unit sensor replacement, and sometimes in the morning the oil light shows yellow but then I use your steps and it says OK. Any idea? Is the new sensor still faulty? Is it a problem when engine is cold? Thanks!

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello, I would first try adding just half a liter of oil and see if the problem persists. It may just be a bit low when cold but checks out ok when warm. If it still does it unplug the oil level sensor and see if the warning stops. If it does then the replacement oil level sensor is most likely the cause.

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Před 2 lety

      Hi Scotty, It should have an electronic check if it has no dipstick. Maybe an option in your I drive menu. The only other way is to manually drain and measure the oil if the function is not working.

    So if the oil level sensor is bad there is no other way to check? No dipstick? Is it true that the only way to test the transmission fluid on this thing is to stick your finger in the hole underneath?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Před rokem

      Hello Jonathan, If your oil level sensor fails the only way to check your oil level is to drain, catch, measure, and pour back into the engine. There is no dipstick. BMW has eliminated the dipstick which most mechanics like me are not happy about. But I have dealt with this for quite some time now. Best course of action would be to replace the oil level sensor so you can check the oil level if it does fail. As for your transmission fluid it is a bit more complex than just putting your finger in the hole. Basically when at a slightly warmed up state the transmission oil should come out of the fill hole when full. This is checked with the engine running. If you take the fill plug off with the engine off you will dump transmission fluid as it is measured while the torque converter is running and filled with fluid. I have a video of a drain and fill on a BMW X3 from a long time ago if interested.

    I bought a 2008 X3 a year ago. The oil level feature is driving me nuts. It's telling me that it's low.....but not enough that it needs a full quart. With no dipstick, I don't know how much to add. Waiting for a full quart warning feels negligent.

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Před 4 lety

      Hello, If the warning comes on when the vehicle is first started and then goes off when warm you are safe to add 1 qt. Ad the engine warms up the oil expands and then reads a bit higher. You can also add in .25 increments and recheck until it reads full. Yes it is annoying :)

    15500 mile oil change interval killed the engine in my 2008 X3. My 2011 BMW 335i had rod bearing issue because of 15K mile oil change interval. Change oil every 7k mile people. BMW knows how to screw up the customers.
