Are These Supercars REAL? Five Surprising Chinese Supercars

  • Are supercars like the YangWang U9 ready to take on Ferrari?
UPDATE 25 Feb 2024: The Yangwang U9 seems to be one step closer to reality. BYD released official power (1,287 hp), acceleration (2.36s 0-62 mph), price ($233,000), and is taking initial orders.
Over the past decade, China's automotive companies have revealed dozens of supercars, like the NIO EP9. Not only is that real, it's really fast! It has a Nurburgring lap time among the ten fastest ever recorded. Today, we’re gonna dig into these supercars, and figure out if five unbelievable cars actually exist... and can do what their manufacturers claim. Includes the BYD Yangwang U9, Hyper SSR, ArcFox 7, Techrules Ren, and NIO EP9. Could supercars from a country that manufactures more cars than any other, and home to BYD, a company that sells more EVs than Tesla, compete with the Ferrari 296 GTB or mighty Rimac Nevera? Could one of these supercar bargains even be a spiritual successor to the original Honda NSX? Only time will tell...

      OVERDRIVE
Hi, everyone. This is Scott from OVERDRIVE.
First, thank you to the half-million of you who’ve subscribed since we began in 2021, it's your support that drives us. I know we haven't posted new videos lately, but the channel is still here, and I have an update to share with you.
Running OVERDRIVE for the past three years has been an incredible journey, albeit with its challenges. In 2023, we hit a rough patch with expenses nearly doubling our income. As an independent channel, that’s not sustainable.
Last November, I made the heartbreaking decision to cease production at OVERDRIVE. This meant we had to let most of OVERDRIVE's amazing staff go and significantly change the roles of others. That wasn’t something anyone wanted, but there wasn’t an alternative.
However, following recent conversations with my family, mentors, and other creators, it became apparent that OVERDRIVE could continue IF we adapt and change. That means minimal staff and no expensive races or stunts. We won’t be finding out which £2000 car can jump the farthest - not just yet, anyway.
In the coming weeks, OVERDRIVE will be making focused automotive content that satisfies curiosity and is still fun to watch. We’ll be diving into cutting-edge technology, sharing forgotten stories from automotive history, and examining the science, engineering, and design behind your car, as well as some of the most unique cars ever made. We’ll try to make that entertaining, too!
Our mission for 2024 is to make content that gives value to the community of enthusiasts who’ve supported OVERDRIVE. So, please stick with us for a little longer, your support is what drives us forward. And always please give us your feedback along the way. Ultimately, we’re relying on you to survive.
Now, we’re going to get to work creating new content to release over the coming weeks, so please look out for OVERDRIVE’s next video soon. Thanks for watching!

No matter what brand of street legal car you use as a pace car. They are all slow compared to an F1. Just to be clear, at maximum Rimac speed around the circuit, a Formula 1 is barely using aerodynamics and tires struggle to get warm. The F1 are made to go insanely fast, especially in the corners. Any lower speed than expected means the F1 would have to do a couple of laps at 95% to re-warm up before going 100% again.

neither your neighbours or potential girlfriend won’t have a clue .

My problem with Chinese cars is they seem soulless. They all seem to be targeting the higher end of the market since they're all about face. They all want something that screams luxury and sophistication with a strong brand cache. I see nothing in the vein of a Civic Si or MX5 or Mustang that stokes the flame of traditional car enthusiasm, it all seems like toys for tech bros.

The problem with EV supercars is the battery. A battery that can store a decent amount of energy and mainly can discharge it very quickly is expensive and definitly not something you want to cheap out on. China does have a reputation for producing all sorts of things on the cheap, so I would be extremly careful when buying one such car and immediatly let some expert check the battery.
