    Hey Mark! Thank you for the tour, my wife and I enjoyed the video. We like how the rig looks and all your upgrades. My wife liked the look of the canvas and snaps. We have a 2003 E250 cargo van and we're making a camper. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video, keep up the good work!

I'd get a Natures Head Compositing toilet, glam up the bath/shower area have a cook top electric/sterno s'mores heat...There is so much space to play with...Awesome job! Older Coachmen Class B Camper Vans are great. I have one. I was good to see the video about your 1994. I have a 1996 Coachmen Class B on a GMC chassis - M19-RD - (19' with Rear Dinette). Similar to yours, but different in some areas. All original with 50k miles. Still has the "beautiful" green interior. Thanks for you video. I did appreciate it, even though I went off about the propane systems removal.

    job is pretty easy but I am going to rebuild all you have and more ! on only a few dollars!
    My concern is going to be to do as nice a job as you have and more for many fewer dollars. I spent $1,500 on my rig and I gure with another 1500 hundred in dollars and some FUN elbow grease, I will be able to get $7,500 out of mine easy!!!

    I noticed the front plate step... really great for cleaning the windshield. E40D .. use under drive (Not overdrive, but the gear under with OD turned off, this is 1 to 1) at around town and easy accelerations... and learn to use the OD without putting the foot into it much and never force the downshift, do it by the button. Then use a transmission temperature gauge. Then you can save that trans for a long time. Keep the fluid pink and sweat smelling, never light brown or brown ... I was a Ford factory trained tech back in those days.

I've always hated dealing with propane. Do you remember how much the refrigerator you ended up buying cost? Did it run on electric or battery? The RV I'm going to see has full solar panels on top which I'm so thrilled about. This will be my very first RV to live in full time but staying semi close to home base (kids and grandkids) I will be RVing alone. Thanks. Kim

    I don't watch TV when I'm home lol. I hate TV. I use my laptop to watch CZcams videos and that's it. But if I had a TV, I wouldn't have it over the sink. As finicky as these new TV's are, the dampness of having it over the sink is eventually going to cause it to fizz out. I'd also ditch the microwave as I don't use those, either. I'd use the space to get a larger fridge as I love salads so have to have my veggies. But I'd have two spaces beneath the fridge...one for a drawer for a pull out two burner cook top and my toaster oven in a space below that. I'd put a regular twin mattress on the couch base (or have one custom made, I hear they're not that expensive) and just make a cushion for the back and two "roll" pillows for the arms when I want to make it into a couch. What about storage below the couch? I do love the little tub/shower back there. That's my fave thing. Have you ever considered a cassette toilet? It has a removable tank so you can empty anywhere. I love those. Anyway this was one of the nicer vans I've seen. Congrats.

  • @jamesgill5511
    @jamesgill5511 Před 7 lety

    Watch out with the heavier rear sway bar. It may stop body roll on mild corners, but any stiffening of the rear suspension leads to more chance of the vehicle oversteering. The big issue with these generation vans, particularly the 15 passenger/extended models, was oversteer leading to roll overs. It's a balancing act between over and under steer.

    It's called getting a propane leak alarm. Standard equipment. Quite paranoid. Your not going to get much for it between the high mileage and ruining it by removing the propane system. Short sighted.

    • @JYDOG
      @JYDOG  Před 8 lety +7

      +Jay Gold Propane tanks have a limited life span and have to be inspected and replaced periodically if they pass inspection they are only good for about 5 years after that. I purchased a brand new safe T alert LP and carbon monoxide detector from amazon and it was bad out of the box. They replaced it free of charge but what do you do the time it doesn't work and you have a gas leak? I just think electric strip heater or a diesel heater is much safer. The hot water heater was easily converted to electric with a $60 kit. An engine heat exchanger is another great way to heat water for taking a shower. We have very efficient 12v refrigerators they did not have back in 1994. You may look at removing propane and replacing it with modern alternatives as destroying the value but I don't think I will have a problem getting book value even with 200k well maintained miles on it. The new class B's start at 80K and go up. This will do the same thing for 8k. I appreciate your thoughts on this but I can sleep better at night knowing I don't have a propane leak.

    Nice coach. Great job sorting it out.
    Dying from a propane leak is like dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. You really have to screw up for that to happen. You can just as well die in a fire caused by an electrical short.
    In any case, the propane story sounds slightly fishy because propane is a heavy gas that stays close to the floor. It would take a lot of gas for it to reach someone asleep 3' off the ground. And even the smallest spark caused by static electricity will turn the RV into a 1000 lb bomb.

  • @superbmediacontentcreator

    • @JYDOG
      @JYDOG  Před 7 lety +1

      I know economically propane makes a lot of sense but I don't feel comfortable with it in my house or my RV. Just something else for me to worry about at night. You can just download and install the Netflix, Hulu, CZcams etc channels. Maybe the one you are looking at hasn't been downloaded yet.

    Hey JY, great vids, love your style-However I just bought a '98 version of this rig, coach seems identical- couple questions(2). 1- What is behind the fabric and matting on door panels, something reusable or is just something to use as a template,I don't want to redo with fabric, and 2- Whats under the carpet in the galley area? Any kinda usable surface( i'm thinking on using linoleum) or is it just carpet foam liner on wool, seems flat enough for some type of underlay flooring. Fingers crossed you say lauan in both cases, and not cardboard. Just got rig home yesterday, mind is spinning with ideas- but rain(SoFla) and work(Ma Bell) haven't let up enough to check for my own self. Thanks, Bill

    Regarding propane systems in RV's. They have been used safely and effectively for decades. Are they 100%? Of course not. But what is? However, their track record is excellent. Most RV's manufactured since the 80's have Propane Leak Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Leak Detectors installed in the factory. My 1996 Coachmen Class B M19-RD has both of these. And then there are also Smoke Detectors in most RV's. Did you remove these safety devices from your RV?
    Lot's of things can be dangerous and cause deaths. RV gasoline generators can leak and catch fire and kill RV occupants. It's been known to happen occasionally. About as frequently as propane leaks that cause death. Did you remove the generator?
    I've owned four used RV's that were 20 to 25 years old with the original propane tanks. The tanks themselves rarely go bad. It is the fittings and lines that need to be inspected periodically and checked for leaks (use a liquid leak detector on all the fittings or use an electronic propane leak detector). Easy fix to replace fittings and lines. It's called "maintenance". No different than inspecting your brakes and having the pads, rotors or brake lines replaced. Simple and basic "maintenance" like any system in any vehicle (car, truck, RV, motorcycle, airplane, etc.).
    There are more deaths in airplanes from crashes (more than RV propane deaths), yet I bet you still fly. And 40-50 thousand people die every year from auto accidents in the US, yet I still drive my car, motorcycle and RV.
    Sorry for the rant but your response to one propane death by gutting the propane systems (stove, furnace, water heater, refrigerator) from from 1994 Coachmen was a definite over-reaction. Resale value was significantly reduced. Did you also remove all of the propane systems from your other RV? The box-camper that you mentioned?

    • @JYDOG
      @JYDOG  Před 8 lety

      +Dave Wish No problem man, I'm not anti propane. I just don't trust a 32 year old propane system with my families life. There comes a time to to replace a system such as this and I do not intend on cooking in my rv so that eliminates the stove, the hot water is easily converted to electric and a diesel heater such as espar airtronic d2 diesel heater. See video below. czcams.com/video/hUKeprinFBI/video.html
      if you haven't had your propane tank looked at within 12 years of the date stamped on it you may want to look into that. www.propane101.com/propanecylinders.htm#cylinderrecertification
      Your probably right about the statistics but why not take better route if it is available and you have to spend the money anyway to make things safe? I just want to avoid a tragedy like this in the link below.
      vogeltalksrving.com/2014/12/father-daughter-died-of-co-poisoning-in-rv/
      The box camper i am building will not have any propane I am looking into using the espar diesel heater in it. You should check it out
      czcams.com/video/dMBQZCrx40A/video.html
      I still have all of the propane equipment if the new user would like to put it back.

      Hey that's good to know. I wasn't aware of that. Last time we went on a trip we used over 20GB of data ( how much I have on my verizon plan ) and it was all netflix and youtube. Thanks for passing that on. I may have to invest in a T-mobile plan. How is the coverage?

    • @dickmoneysgun
      @dickmoneysgun Před 8 lety

      JYDOG It really depends on where you're at from what I've heard Verizon "had" better nation wide coverage but for me personally I really dislike Verizon so my opinion is biased in that regard. Also, apparently T-mobile has doubled their coverage in the last year alone so I wouldn't exactly write them off.

    Does anyone out there in Comment Land know --- "approximately" --- what a "decent" 1994 Ram 3500 Coachmen sells for in 2020??? I might have a change at getting one, but I'm having a difficult time coming up with a "number" before I enter into some kind of negotiation with the owner which will happen in about a week from the date I'm typing this. I'd truly appreciate any feedback!!!

    So could someone hook up the fridge to Solar Power instead of running the Generator all the time, to save it for emergencies?

    • @JYDOG
      @JYDOG  Před 6 lety

      Yes as long as it is a 12volt fridge with low amperage draw. You will still need a battery when the sun is not available.

    • @LeonAllanDavis
      @LeonAllanDavis Před 5 lety

      Use a propane fridge for boondocking. You can run a 6 cubic foot fridge on a 20-lb tank for maybe three months. They basically run on the fumes. Run your stove and water heater on propane as well. Pretty much everything else can be 12V battery power.
      A 12V compressor fridge sucks up the juice. Drain your battery bank in a heartbeat. And whattya gonna do if you hit two weeks of solid overcast? Rain and snow? You can't keep running your generator indefinitely.

    I just got back from looking at a 1995 Ford Coachmen. Terrible. The steering was so sloppy on it to the point of being dangerous to drive. Solid 5 degree turning in either direction non response of the steering. He said "All the Fords drive like that". Does yours have sloppy steering?

    • @JYDOG
      @JYDOG  Před 8 lety

      No not 5 degrees. It is responsive, but be aware that the more weight you have extended beyond the rear axle on a van will also make it kind of wag. Extended vans with a generator, hot water heater and holding tanks beyond the rear axle will not be like a shorter van. Come drive mine and see what you think.

    • @yesiownfrodo
      @yesiownfrodo Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah, I agree. It would be better to stick with the propane and supplement with an induction hotplate and LED lighting - the hotplate you could use if you're staying some place with electric, but the propane lets you stay anywhere you choose.
