Wood Pole Scaffold, Building an Off Grid Log Cabin in the Wilderness, Ep7
Vložit
- čas přidán 2. 12. 2021
- I build a wood scaffold, with saplings cut while clearing the site for the log cabin, so I can safely work on the walls as they get higher. Snow and rain slows me down this week, so we spend some time hiking.

in my opinion there are few books ever written in the "self-help", or motivational world that can inspire and enable one in , the way that watching you does, Shawn! Thank you!!
I honor you, Shawn, for your willingness and ability to go out in all types of weather and to just keep plugging away. Every time I get whiny about going outside when it's "too cold", I think of you and get inspired to get my butt in gear and go outside and get the job done. Thank you for being such a motivational inspiration.
I had to put down my 16 year old rescue dog this week. Please give Cali a big hug for me.
@shawn donohoe
I’m so sorry about your sweet dog.🙏
I know how much it hurts. I had to put down my 18-year old cat on Tuesday.
Hardest thing🥺💔
I am a couple of years older than you and all respect from me for you embarking on such a comprehensive project at our age. You also do not make it easier for yourself by trying to avoid power tools. I built a similar cabin 25-30 years ago, but it was with extensive use of power tools and bought logs (fairly even size and without bark, but they all had to be cut and adapted separately). It was hard work aprox 1200 meters above sea level in Norway, but nothing compared to what you are doing. It looks very nice and good luck going forward.
Good Luck to you too for building your cabin. I'm sure there's a great sense of achievement after its done and seeing your family enjoying it. I can imagine the feeling of pride is so wonderful.
Agree. I admire his skill and hard work but I wouldn't be able to do all that alone and without power tools. I would of at least went with square cut logs as he did with the shop. That would eliminate all that scribing and chopping. I also like that square log look better.
but you're a viking
Well you can tell he's taken care of himself all his life, that makes a big difference. Dude is also jacked lol
@@GlorifiedGremlin yes his body build like he in his early 20's . Doing that kind of work he pretty much workout everyday .i think his other property his log cabin when he build that cabin he take them logs to a sawmill have them debark and he build that cabin his house backyard and take it down bring them to his old property. That why when build cabin it didnt take him long cuz all logs were cut to fit and logs were number to
What's not to love about this man and his dog.
Have been 'Shawn Video Addict ' almost 3 years now. . . A multi-skilled master woodsman, craftsman, & survivalist...Alone & in the old style, no power tools ! Largest cabin logs I've ever seen. . . A true soloist. . . Who really needs others ? Solitude is enough !
He has friends and a family. We all need others.
And how many wives would allow their husband the latitude to do a project like this? Not many I say. I wish Shawn and his family many happy years on their homestead when all is eventually done.
JOHN... What makes you think that Shawn is some solitary individual? You are obviously new on here.
No way in hell is he a 'survivalist'. Buys all his groceries. He's just a rich guy doing what he wants. Good for him
@@claudblevins2569 Um..I guess you have not taken notice of the gardens he planted at the old place or the greenhouse that he erected at the new site...of the wildlife he hunts with a bow and arrow.
Hey SEAN - with the hat, safety glasses and the beard you make a perfect double for Sean Connery - INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE. I hope both you and Cali stay healthy and safe.
Calm and peaceful. Your the best one of all the wilderness channels. Your craftsmanship and your videography is top notch. Cali is the Bonus.
The soul of an artist and the patience of a saint!
The scenery is amazing, The working conditions would stop most people in there tracks.. Your an amazing human being, so dedicated...with a never surrender attitude. thanks for sharing
It is persistence, dedication, workmanship I appreciate watching so much…one cannot witness it so often these days…brilliant videos…many thanks for your hard work , 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I love how dedicated you are. Doesn't matter if it's cold and snowy. You're lugging around these logs by yourself in the not so favorable conditions.
This cabin has been fun to watch from the very beginning and can't wait to see it finished.
I love how your dog comes into the picture and we can watch her think out whether or not you are likely to have time to send her fetching. Decides no, not now and quietly walks away. She is such a good dig.
I have been watching your channel since day one of the original cabin site and have always marveled at your building skills and the use for the most part of simple hand tools. Your explanation of moving to this site makes sense and I can appreciate your decision. In undertaking this much larger and hopefully permanent site displays the evolution of your skills. I have only one concern, the increase in size of the materials. Yes, there seems to be a tool or device for every task in the construction of the cabin but it's your safety that worries me. Time stands still for no man and the white in your beard as in mine belies a fact of life. I wish for your own safety you had a partner in handling the larger, heavier logs as they're stacked higher and higher. Of course the scaffolding is an excellent idea, but another person onsite at this juncture might be prudent in the event of a fall or accident that leaves you incapacitated. I admire your ability and drive to work this project and I want nothing more than you complete this and enjoy your homestead for many years to come. The land surrounding this site is beautiful and I truly envy your little corner of paradise. Good luck!
You are so hard working. It boggles the mind how much you have done. I am pretty sure I am older than you are but even 10 years ago I can't imagine doing what you have done. Job well done sir.
@Memory Lord Yup. He was right there to make sure that Shawn got hit in the eyeball with the woodchip. /s
It’s coming together Shawn and the memories you’ll have once your done will be lifetime memories , Cali is a perfect dog out there with you she’s happy always which is a golden retriever thing lol their the clowns of the dog world smart funny and loyal
Cali is so patient while she's waiting for you to throw her toy Bless her 😀🇦🇺🐕🐕
Enjoy your videos and am thankful you share them with me! Housebound so I love the feeling of sharing the outdoors with you and Cali! God bless y’all abundantly and stay safe and healthy!
Goodmorning Shawn , it's a lifestyle worth living when it's living away from the rat-race of societal coexistence. I'm now retired and looking towards spending whatever time I have left here on our planet in the woods . Best regards and respect from Lloyd somewhere here in Southern Ontario.
An Artist at work!! Enjoying your video’s so much!❤️78 old widow and am awed at your beautiful work besides enjoying Cali! Awesome talent young man❤️
This is incredible. Society needs to develop a work ethic of the olden days like this man. I envy you
I am fellow Ontarian, been watching you since the beginning, I built a studio and that took two years to finish, so I completely understand the highs and lows of build such as your.. I can see you not scared of hard work, I wish you a safe and awesome experience you will remember for your entire life. It's always great to see you living your life to fullest.
Just casually working like it's a beautiful spring day while snow and sleet come down on him in buckets. That's Shawn for you. Better you than me man. I had my days in the snow (though you and I are the same age) and I hated them. Watching you do it from under a warm blanket in Sunny San Diego is the best!
Cali : I'll bet your belly was cold after that wash in the stream but being a dog you are never one to complain. Cheers Shawn for showing us winter conditions which we have over this side of the pond, earlier than usual.
Friday is a great day because of Shawn and Cali 👍👍👍🇵🇭
Love that you are wearing your safety glasses! Have enjoyed your posts for many years and am always waiting for the next one. 😎
Shawn I cannot wait for your family to come home to this beautiful home you are building...brings joy to my heart ❤
Who needs Scaffolding? Not Shawn, he just makes his own! Awesome.
Looks a bit wobbly
Shawn needs scaffolding. That's why he made his own.
My most memorable build of yours was the sauna, with snow up to your hips and logs buried in snow you persevered. But this...these are monsters compared to those. Amazing.
(Glad to see you're wearing the brace on your arm-mine really helped.)
You are so dedicated. and such a hard working man. always n love the videos! Cali is just adorable too.
That is the first time I have ever noticed the log rolled over and seen all the work you did removing the center section all the way down the whole log, that`s gotta take 3 hours per log. The progress is amazing, considering your by yourself, and the working conditions. Fine job sir, love the scaffold, all the best to you and Cali, from Michigan
Never miss ,must watch every Friday. Beginning to hate CZcams for constant commercial interference.
I send my cheers and admiration to you, sir, for the amount of grit and work you put into this.
After felling and debarking three smallish dead pine trees in my yard, I have a small sense of the amount of hard labor going into the prep of each log.
Strong work. Well done and thank you for sharing the craft of this project.
Moven on up in the world. Wilderness scaffold made to last shows what anyone can do with common sense. Great video Shawn. God bless be safe stay warm and healthy. Jim
So breath taking how can you work in such picture Perfect snow day I would just sit and stare at what is in front of me 🐕
Very creative with the scaffolding. LUV Friday mornings with Shawn and Cali. Give Cali a BIG SMOOCH from Mike & Ronnie. GOD BLESS
I had to watch it again, he`s basically making tongue and groove out of monster logs, and cutting out the saddles. That is an incredible amount of work. When you take your coat off in the snow, you know it`s physical labor. He`s on a mission, come hell or high water, this cabin will be built. INCREDIBLE
There's nothing like a fresh Ruffed Grouse for dinner after a hard days work. I'm sure that Cali was enjoying it too! 😀
When I was a wee lad, we lived in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in upstate New York. My dad likes to hunt with Seto, his German Shepherd and we often Ruffed Grouse, rabbits (Hassenpfeffer), and an occasional pheasant for dinner.
It is amazing what your accomplishing and with Cali’s help / companionship. Those jacks you use to hold up the logs for marking sure are strong and seem to stay but with just a few nails. Thanks for sharing your passion to build and be Self Reliant.
As much as this is going to be a bigger nicer cabin. I do miss your old cabin, you did a really good job on that. Plus the other buildings, Sauna/Bath House, Outhouse, and the Outside Cooking Area, all amazing work. Your garden was also starting to come along nicely there.
Добрый вечер! Я из России и очень давно смотрю ваш блог. Просто невероятно,как можно в одиночку построить эту красоту, приложив столько усилий! Желаю Вам крепкого здоровья,успехов в Вашем труде и новых начинаний!
After 2 years I'm still a little amazed that whenever you need something you just grab a hammer and a saw and a few nails and build it. Resourceful and ingenious is what you are.
Fascinating just always so entertaining. A pleasure to witness a man loving his work. Pride, hard work and a furry friend to keep you company and provide a laugh occasionally, we all are grateful to share and watch your progress on this new homestead
I loved seeing the end with you and Cali just hanging out at the workshop. Some of my favorite stuff to watch, it reminds me of some of the older videos.
Your work ethics is impressive Shawn, safety first
This man can come up with. More ways to fix something than u can imagine. Goodmorning you an cali an everyone out there from alabama.
Bama girl here
Greater Bham area represent
My grandparents had a farm in the 60’s close to Cullman. LOVE Alabama!♥️
Having my coffee with you and Cali this fine morning.
me too!
☕️
I love to see Cali retrieving anything but especially when you bow hunt!!!
Callie is saying " ok pops i appreciate all the hard work you are doing to get us a warm cabin but don't forget but our plaz time cuz im a very good pup woof woof "
Yay! Another beautiful video. My husband and I love watching your videos. Your craftsmanship is perfectly beautiful!!!
Good morning Shawn and Cali. Nice work, enjoyed watching Take care!
Gosh Shawn you sure making great progress to the cabin. I freeze to death just watching you in the pouring snow that we hardly ever get here in North Central Louisiana. I SO ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS
☃️A beautiful winter day there Shawn. Not so great for building, I guess, but such beauty. 🧡Sweet Cali has a birthday this month! 🥳✨😘💋 🎉
I can watch this a long while in a quiet moment up here in the Alps. Not just the skill and determination but the flow of
an intelligent creative mind. It helps me focus on what is important and beautiful, thanks...camera man is great as well.
Shawn, your skill, determination, and hard work ethic is so impressive. I love how Cali waits for you. Your new home is beautiful.
Just love watching the "ever hopeful" Calli.
Keep doing what you do Shawn. You have a beautiful place to live brother. be safe
You are a man of patience! Looking good!
Great video! I was expecting you to make a ladder at some point but you make a scaffold! It's not the most impressive thing you've done but I was entertained. I keep watching you add logs every week and I'm worried about it sinking in on ya. You know what you're doing. Can't wait to see it finished. I've watched every video for the past 2 years so far so I have an idea of how cool the house will be.
Seriously, I appreciate your work and the time you take to record it for the world to see. Thank you
Hats off to you for braving the elements while building your log home. Can’t things wait until spring? Don’t you just want to curl up with a book in front of the fire instead? Take care and be safe!
Can’t wait to see this cabin finished! 🌀💚🌀
Progress. Another log safely put into place.
I love it when the logs fall solidly onto their bed in the lovely green snow sprinkled moss. It will smell so fresh in the cabin from the newly cut wood and earthy greens.
Shaw I love how everything is coming out just great !! Your cabin is starting to look more and more rock solid!! I take my hat off to you for doing all that by yourself !! It isn’t easy but you’re always coming out with new ideas how to do things a lot easier for yourself !! Thank you for sharing !! I’ve been watching your channels from day one and always look forward to your next episode. 👍😃
Who else agrees with safety glasses and nice white beard Shawn can do the Father Christmas thing for the grand babies when he’s finished building everything🎅🏻 sorry Shawn but I just sooooo love that beard, it suits you
I noticed a couple videos back. I wondered if this was his intention. I mean, Santa can be an attractive, he manly man figure too. I think Mrs. Claus would agree.
Much better looking Indiana Jones, imo.
@@RatsAss67 mrs James too🤣🤣🤣👍🏻
@@gkopij a bit exhausting though, always on the run through big holes and mountains, being chased by scary animals, think he got his hands full from squirrels and chipmunks right now🤣🤣
Winter Shawn.
Nice scaffolding, I have a feeling you'll be building more. It looks like Cali is in fine form retrieving dinner for you both!
Cali: This is not a drill. 😊
Love the scenery. I hope we get some snow here in Tennessee soon.
Cabin is coming along nicely. Cheers!
Hi Shaun I get so excited when another log gets put into place, just another step nearer to your finished home,.
Love the winter scenery.the sound of the rushing water is relaxing to me.I’ll never get to visit your area so I fully appreciate your videos.thank you so much for time involved in making these videos.
Art HD GB
Sure is awesome.
Man you are a true craftsman.
Such a peaceful video, thank you sir.
Please consider a brace under the plank you are standing on to secure the open side of the scaffold.
Shawn you simply amaze me on what you can do. Stay safe and have a great weekend. 👍
This is becoming more dangerous with the slippery snow and ice. I am pleased you have the workshop as a warming room, a place to heat coffee and lunch.
Love how you’re productive even in inclement weather. Scenery was beautiful,& Cali appears to have a great time, no matter what the circumstance. Looking forward to your progression. Stay safe, healthy, happy, blessed,& productive.💯❤️👍🏾🙋🏽♀️✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
LOL. My dad’s like you - he can work in cold temps without gloves and I dunno how he did it. Cold didn’t affect him one bit either.
Keep your corners square! 😊👍
Yay, he's wearing his safety glasses!👍I have to get on my own "Superman" about it.
Shawn, your physical strength and endurance is incredible, but so is your mental strength! I don't know anyone in my area who has at least half as much strength and determination to continue and persevere in construction in any weather, just like you. Personally, I love such weather, heavy snowfall, but I can't imagine building a house in it. You are a typical example to follow! Have my great respect, may it prosper and may the house grow! Regards, M.
I really enjoyed this weekend's episode, Shawn. Fascinating how you work on notching the logs for the wall with the future entrance doorway, and glad you are using eye protection when chopping the notches, and saplings for the scaffolding. That fabric strap really looked frozen, and your clothing indicates that the Canadian winter is setting in now. Cali is such great company for you.
Hi Mr. Shawn,You must have heard me when I said you need two bords to holt you weight, when I looked back there was suddenly two bords.Friday is the best day of the week for me. To live and live in such a duel is something wonderful, reminds me of my childhood. stay safe
building my own cabin right now...your just a course ahead of me..love the video
Everything about your show is so informative and relaxing. Love the weather. Take care.
Little worried about Calie - wadding in that icy creek ?!? WOW! That dog must have some sort of built in "Antifreeze" system going full blast.
Dedicated discipline. I'm feeling building this log cabin ( along with you, in my imagination.) so much more this time. I guess it is because I'm older now and those two years, plus the size of this undertaking, is making it's presence felt. You, Shawn, keep on keeping on. Respect and wonderment.
I love what you are doing Shawn, keep up the great work...love all of the videos you post, keep 'em coming...take care, be safe and GOD BLESS.
Shawn it amazes me that a video can be made not a word spoken and thousands of people and myself will watch it from start to finish , that's not only a very special thing but also shows your love for the outdoors , nature and the forest. PBS play the Dick Proenneke story the other night as I watched it was thinking of you and the journey your on. Thanks for giving me a place to go and relax. God bless be safe always watching
I do hope your eyes are doing well after your accident. I’m guessing from watching you work you’re pretty much recovered from everything now. I. You seem to be making good progress on your cabin, and are doing a great job on it. I wish you well my friend!!
Love watching these videos! The sounds out in the wilderness are peaceful and amazing!
A TRUE MAN of the woods ….SHAWN YOUR SKILLS ARE MANY ❤️🥰
Finally settle down for a re-watch... Shawn, You are doing a phenomenal job. Absolutely salute your work ethics, sheer grit, worknamship and honest hard work. Going off grid... You made a choice you'll never regret. Its the way to go. Stay safe, and keep going. UK.
The first thing I look for when your video comes on ,is Calie. She is such a silly dog .I just love her.
How can she go in the water ? It looks so cold.
You are a hard worker .
I wish I had a little bit of your energy.
God Bless you and your family
Reasons why I like Fridays... new cabin videos !!!!!
I love watching your videos...so much talent and you make it look so easy. Not everyone is so gifted. I love your dog he is so dedicated. I try to watch one every few days.
Another great video. Nice to watch the progress you are making.
I must say as always your content is awesome always love the videos you do thanks for sharing this one with us have a good one
Suggest you use an old-style Peavy/cant hook for rolling logs to save your back. And to leverage logs into place to save the handle on your debarking tool. Besides: old tool = old school = old cool.
Great suggestion
Awesome job on the scaffold sir, it will definitely come in handy the further up you go. I really enjoy watching your content, old school ways, taking time with Caleigh. Love what you're doing!
GREAT job on the video, Shawn. Enjoy watching how you build. Looks like the same weather over here at our cabin in the Arrowhead. Be safe and glad to see you are wearing those safety glasses. A perfect time of year to be outside.
Mr. Shawn, idea! OR simple fan request - I'd love to know (although you typically keep us apprised when extremes are reached) what Temps you are working in. How about a temp read, much like a time stamp at a lower or upper corner of the screen. I think it might be an interesting add. I love to follow your work and understand your conditions you experience in Canada (I'm in Arizona and we have our wicked temp extremes too). You know when Cali went down with that heat stroke/exhaustion this summer our hearts broke down with her. I think a temp stamp would lend nicely to the educational aspect of your videos. Thanks for listening. Keep up the great work; both of you. Lots of love and holiday cheer sent to you, everyone in Canada and all viewers around the world. Peace from AZ. USA.
the only problem with that is, you have weirdos who try to locate his exact location and temps can help narrow things down. all it takes is the little things sometimes.
@@uhaneokalanijames8029 So true, Shawn gives us more than enough. There's no need to see him bleed, to please a few.
Which is what happened at the last cabin, people pinpointing him based on his drone shots and the people who moved in close to him just to cause issues. It is cold enough for snow to stay. All we need to know.
Love your dog , love your channel / amazing craftsmanship
