I was waiting for this video! Is kind of exhausting that at the end of every year every youtuber seems to be talking about the same records over and over (I know that the new Big Thief record or the last Alex G record are great, but please stop!!!)
There are just a few creators that really diversify this canon and give it a real nice personal side to it and this is an example
There’s definitely an indie A list. While Alex G and Big Thief truly deserve their recognition, this “canon” has a way of curbing people’s appetite for music discovery by dominating “alternative” social feeds.
He's back folks!
I love your list, it's so unlike anything else I've seen! I've only listened to The Beths & Daniel Rossen from this list so I've got a lot I'm looking forward to listening to. Looking forward to your return in 2023!!
Thanks for tuning in! There’s a lot of variety here so I’m sure you’ll find something you love. Lots of honorable mentions coming as well
@@MattOLearyMusic I gave Born in Fog a listen today and it was an immediate hit! It's like Local Natives meets Radiohead and I loved every minute of it. shook up my top 10 already 😂 Would've never found it without you, I greatly appreciate the recommendation!!
Love your videos
ROACH. Thanks
Loved Valleyheart's and TOLEDO's releases from this year. Also thought no one else knew about RAY. So happy to see them get some love!
Anything and everything like RAY, please pass my way. Thanks for watching, Nathan!
@@MattOLearyMusic "our hope" by Hitsujibungaku was my next favorite Japanese indie album from last year (Carol is the I Swim at Night track, in terms of a song to get you hooked, for them in my opinion); however, they are extremely different bands and their albums sound nothing alike.
Sorry I can't give you a great comp, but I'll let you know if I find anything. I am just beginning to get into the Japanese indie scene so I am sure there are tons of great releases I missed.
Very good list Matt, really pleased to see you posting again. New to me are Stephen Becker, Secret Gardens and Valleyheart (from your top 20) and Michael Rault, Low Island, Ghost Funk Orchestra & Manticore (from your spotify list) which all sound interesting & I will be checking them out. I listen to a TON of new music but your lists always reveal some extra hidden gems to me, hope to hear more from you in the New Year, P.S. Congratulations releasing your own Dichotomania CD, nice tunes on that too 🙂
Thanks for listening to Dichotomania. I’m curious which projects I missed this year that you think I’d be into. Happy new year 🎆
thanks for including Born in Fog here, and you’re right, there’s no money, only joy ❤
Thanks for making it. Wish you and the band a fruitful 2023 🍇
Excellent video and I appreciate the diverse taste in music. It has definitely given me a few albums to go check out! I get a bit stuck in my traditional Prog lane and I like to venture out a little and explore different (related) genres…
I have been following your videos for some time and it was really cool to see some traditional Prog make your list (like The Tangent, Jonas Lindberg, Lonely Robot, etc.)! Thanks for bringing some awareness to the Prog scene! We have some shared favorites I believe 😊
Thanks Nathan! Been enjoying your channel this year. You’re part of the reason for my love of these prog albums. I think you’ll come to love Dungen if ya haven’t heard too much yet. Their albums Allas Sak and Skit I Allt are also worth your time.
@@MattOLearyMusic awesome, glad to hear it! Dungen is definitely on my list to check out after watching the video!
Welcome back!
Thanks Geir 🙏
Great list! I’m so excited for you on discovering The Tangent and Big Big Train. Both have incredible back catalogues to dive into :D
Already loving moments from the English Electric albums, Folklore and Grand Tour.
i was reading the Badungen and not the band Dungen in the timestamps :P
very cool and varied list Matt!
I just wishlisted a few of these on rym:
Ray
Simon Phillips
Madison Cunningham
King Gizzard - Changes (knew it, but never got around to even wishlisting it). There's a CZcamsr I watch named MaryLovesMusic who has raved about this 1 for example.
many names I know and some on my list as well of course.
Curious to see the other Honorable Mentions you noted coming later, and also good to hear you plan to be putting up more Videos here again soon.
Thanks Kyle. Do you have a list I could check out? Also, is RYM a good source for finding new stuff, or just sharing and cataloging opinions of records?
