"He's objectively brilliant" As a music theory circus act, perhaps. As a composer/songwriter that resonates with people, not even close... And as a lyrisist he's beyond crap. And let's not even mention Collier with Miles Davis or Bach in the same sentence. There have been tons of jazz players with the same or even more music theory knowledge and (more) performing skills than Collier, but they had much better taste in their output. Comparing something like Kind of Blue or A Love Supreme with Collier's output is like comparing Tolstoy and David Foster Wallace. Collier is what happens when you develop music skills but not discretion and taste.

Man, I didn't really make music a primary interest of mine until my senior year of high school (despite my parents best attempts to get me into some great stuff 😅). My early years were firmly in the iTunes / digital era so I mostly had a random assortment of singles and songs my parents loaded onto my iPod. I also used to animate and share music videos using a service called Flipnote Hatena on my DSi and without going too far down that rabbit hole, I just have to at least mention the impact that community had on my music choices as a kid. The main bands I can nail down as being early influences on me though are from that mid-2000's soft rock era. I absolutely loved OneRepublic, Coldplay, The Fray, Snow Patrol, Owl City, The Script. My preference for that sound never left me honestly, I'm still a total sucker for piano-driven rock songs even though I've long moved on from most of those bands. I think I've just evolved and expanded my taste as I've been exposed to more music.

I ended up being more of a metalhead but Michael Jackson's Thriller was the first one that blew me away

It’s funny - Stadium and American Idiot were both hugely influential on my music tastes growing up; I’m not huge on American Idiot now but Stadium is still one of my favorite albums of all time by my favorite band. Frusciante’s guitar work on that record is an absolute joke. Great list.

This will be a cool series. It's always great to get to know the youtubers this way and vice versa. My favorite of your bunch would be the Chili Peppers. You don't form in the wet sand! You don't form at all! Love it! Frusciante at his finest. And I think his solo albums of that time period reflecf that surge of creativity, culminating with the masterpiece The Empyrean. My top 5 of formative years (10-14, early to mid 90s). All of these greatly influenced by the MTV early 90s golden age: 1. Guns n Roses- "Use Your Illusion I" One of my 1st tapes that I played over and over in my Walkman. Obsessed with Slash and also started piano lessons again to learn November Rain. 2. Pearl Jam- "Ten" I couldn't go anywhere without people singing Jeremy to me 😄. But the whole album from start to finish mesmerized me from the hits to the b sides. 3. Weezer- "Blue Album" Sparked by the smash hits of Buddy Holly and Say in Ain't So. Eventually fell in love more with the second half of the album. 4. Green Day- "Dookie" What kid didn't rock out to this album then? Tre Cool along with Dave Grohl made me want to smash the hell out of my drums. 5. Nirvana- "Nevermind" Head banger. Teenage angst at its finest. Runner ups! The Offspring- "Smash" Rancid- "And Out Come The Wolves" 311- "Self Titled"

I don’t know why no one ever describes their music as blues. Most of Fagans inspiration comes from blues heroes and he even says that in interviews. I know there are jazz and rock elements, but most of the roots are based in blues.

I agree, I get that maximalist is his thing, but some restraint and focus may produce less work, but it's so frustrating that with many artists short of ideas to explore. he has too many..

I must admit I just can’t get into this band and I have their first four albums.I have tried and tried but now those cds collect dust on the shelf.I came here to try and peak my interest.I will try again in the next few days.

Every song has its place on this album. It’s a 10/10 from me. This conversation was a little unenthusiastic for how great this band is. Finding the Lemon twigs is the most excited I’ve been for music in a good 20 years. Most of my favourite songs are from Everything Harmony and Songs for the General public. I wasn’t sure either of those albums could be beaten, but in terms of consistent great tracks it’s just as good, if not better! I appreciate the content though. Thanks very much.

For me it's S Tier SSTB, IKS, GA3 A tier NWFT, Descension B Tier: Ascension (the first coheed album that had skippable songs for me) YOTBR (underrated, good songs, bad production and mixing) Vaxis 1 C Tier: Vaxis 2 TCBTS (this album felt particularly undercooked, for a deeply personal album I felt like Claudio was lyrically at his weakest here).

Djesse 4 is the only Jacob album I've wanted to listen to multiple times

Why is this band not huge? Maybe they are too 60's or 70's for today's trends but for me they are the best band around.

I don't think the comparison to Gretta Van Fleet is fair. Stylistically these guys are all over the map, even if they do wear their influences on their sleeves. But GVF is a blatant ripoff of one band, and everyone knows who it is the second you hear them. They even mimic their mannerisms and vocal affectations to a T. I was actually embarrassed for them the first time I heard their music. The Lemon Twigs are nothing like that. They're writing great songs and evolving with each new album. It's like an apples and hammers comparison.

I think it's true that Jacob's songwriting is not quite at the level of say his sense of harmony, his creative use of sounds and colors, his arranging, and his innovation. But it's still very good. As for the styles being all over the place - that's what he hears and what he likes, so there it is. I think it's great personally, and the way that he incorporates artists from all of those different genres - also great. Also, regarding his songwriting, remember this is a pop record. He is deliberately making the songs simple. If he didn't, people would be complaining that he's making them too complex. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The arrangements are very complex. If the songs themselves were also very complex it would truly be too much, even for people who are more comfortable with a lot of complexity. So there's a balance / juxtaposition / push and pull here between the simple (songs) and the complex (arrangements).

Jacob Collier is the musical definition of "just because. you can, doesn't mean you should." He is absolutely unlistenable.

Did you like the songs on Western Western culture though?

I don’t know if this album hits as hard as Everything Harmony, but for me it’s still so consistently fun and enjoyable. The deep cuts grew on me a lot and of course all of the singles are great. I found the second half to have some tracks I didn’t love as much, but there is no “bad” song on here. Picked up a vinyl copy for this as soon as I had the chance and I’m not disappointed!

The Twigs have a common situation that 10cc had for their first two albums. Basically Freedom to do as they please,. They both had their own studios to experiment in. When you mix that with the crazy talent they have, you get great albums.The kind where all the songs are great, and some are fantastic. The kind of albums where people have a different favorite song. always a good sign. Its been a long time since I've bought an album that I can't wait to listen to everyday. And let's not forget their personalities, they seem like nice guys. So humble. Their albums shouldn't be reviewed, they should be cherished.

I’m sorry man. I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment of both “Hot Motion” and “Exotico”. Yes, I agree “Hot Motion” starts slow, but if you listen to it from “Context” on it actually will surprise you. “Atomise” is a triumph. With “Exotico” I feel like they are making a clean pop record that on multiple listens reveal intricate layering. To each their own I guess. All I know is that I love this band.

I agree with you. When ‘How can I love her more dropped’ was the first time I got really disappointed with a LT track. It was the first time they truly sounded like a carbon copy of some 60-70s band with nothing new added to the mix. I miss Michael’s bizarre but entertaining lyrics and Brian’s cool synth stuff he did. I hope they realize that they’re strength lied in there weirdness and extravagant take on the 60s music and go back to that. Maybe they feel as they’ve gotten older and HAVE to today more mature coherent music. I don’t know.

With ADIAWK they went in the More Brian Direction because especially Brian Felt his ballads in the past Albums were his favourites. But for Michael its the music they both like Listen to the Most. So they might have found their favourite style to write and reduce throwing in some weirdness and over the top virtuosity. For me thats fine, ADIAWK and EH are my favourite Albums so far. It seems more smooth as for the record.

The album is a five and a ten, because is so high music quality and the best of the best momentum of rock history. So, don´t complain.

Probably alone in this, but I'd love it if they'd make a Lemon Twigs album more in the direction of the Alan Parsons Project.

You can't argue with the songwriting, it's top shelf. But the whole "nostalgia" aspect is really hurting them as an original band. I just can't imagine they're not saying, "let's write a wings song", "let's write a beach Boys song".....and they're doing a great job at it.... But if I wanted to hear a Beach Boys song, I'd listen to the Beach Boys. I loved Everything Harmony, but this album, despite having as strong songs, is just too much style copying and I just don't want to listen to it. They dress 70s, they literally try and write songs that sound like iconic bands of the past, it's getting boring. I think I'm just done with this band, unfortunately. The 70s novelty band thing is hurting their genuine songwriting talent. Be more original Twigs!
