Hello Bryan, For the wi-fi model the Cat Door 'Connect' you do need their Hub to use an app on a smartphone. BUT if your cat has an ordinary microchip (all of my cats have a chip) you will be better off with the Dual Scan cat door. This gives you control of who goes in and out through your cat or cats microchip and keeps out unwanted visitors. I hope this helps. Marjorie
