Italian vs. American Cheese | Italian Tries American Cheese for the First Time | Blind Taste Test
In this video, my Italian wife and I conduct a blind taste test between Italian parmigiano cheese and American parmesan cheese... and then I surprise her with a selection of American cheeses! She tries sharp cheddar, pimento spread, grated "6 Cheese Italian," and EZ Cheese spray. You'll be shocked to learn which one was her favorite!

The difference between italian cheese and american cheese is that
Italian cheese is cheese
American cheese as a product is not indicative of the variety of cheeses Americans make. It's clear that this video was all about views.
TRUE
Yeah I mean obviously we have delicious cheeses too, but this are the bottom of the barrel, mass produced, low quality crap that people in America would not really consider cheese either. We like it, but we don't think it's "good" if that makes sense hahahaha
@@mrtyreus0 Agree! I am an immigrant to the US, and have to say once you get away from the mass market plastic cheeses, the quality jumps astronomically.

@@johnsrome8459 I think they are asking how old the women in the video is.
It is not Italian cows that make better milk, it is Italians that make better cheese.
Well it is important what the cows are feed before you milk them. I live in Sweden and I think we got the most amazing milk. But then you go to Brasil and the milk is so empty and bland. They themself even prefer this powder milk which I really don´t like haha. But I have no idea how italian milk taste like.

I am from Parma. Yes, cows in Parma are little angels. But for real, even in Italy, there is a distinction between Parmigiano and Grana Padano. Parmigiano can be made only in a small territory around Parma and Reggio and has specific requirements that you should Google. There is also some sort of action going on as Parmigiano is DOP and Parmesan basically confuses consumers abroad regarding what Parmigiano actually is. It is seen as basically the food version of a counterfeit designer piece of clothing. By the way, I really like your channel.
è quello il bello dell'Italia
ci puoi stare quanto vuoi.... ma non avrai MAI assaggiato TUTTE le nostre pietanze.... perché sono praticamente infinite
dato che in ogni paesino/paese, citta, comune, provincia, regione, STATOOOH (ok esagero... o forse no? :D), ha le sue specifiche pietanze.

Simone, presente!
"lets try this italian grated cheese"
Eva: *ANGRY ITALIAN NOISES*
😂
@zak ryals surely, has been a while since i stopped buying grated cheese and i grate it myself
As an italian I'm not saying our's are necessarily better, but why oh why! americans always trying to mimick other things? Starts your own variety of cheeses that in time will became tradition, not some bullshit like "6 italian cheese molded together" ;)
Auguro.
The problem is Americans make weird cheeses (Im Mexican American I can say this, I was born and raised here lol) like the can is a strange one, and so is the spread and such, its a cheese spread or dip of some sort so its not purely a cheese. The 6 cheese one is also strange, how dont mix multiple types of cheese together haha
@@ryanparoline2281 Thanks for this comment and thanks for being an awesome human and understanding the importance of food. Watching the US almost feels like watching a cult, first they say whatever then they eat and they can't believe how good it is, if we could only wake them up from this slumber, they'd feel much better too
@@NVS_Snake I think that potentially they could make good cheese. Think about all the land they have, especially in the mid-west, and the pastures and all of that. But then they go and ruin it all by adding crap in making the cheese. Another important factor I think is that their cheese is often (almost 100% of the time%) not correctly aged and packed in that thick plastic. This gives the cheese a characteristic plastic taste, and also leaves it humid and oily... bleahh!!
Well, these cheeses won't be sold by any cheese store or anything really focusing only on the cheese. These are supermarket cheeses. Quality isn't really expected.

The thing is you can see the crystals in the Italian cheese, it's full of them, meaning it's very aged, potentially 24 months or more even. American parmesan isn't even aged for 6 months. Of course it's like night and day.
True, aging parmesan does improve it considerably. It will never get into Parmigiano-Reggiano territory, but it will be a lot better.

American food exists.........
Eva: Mamma mia
American food doesnt really exist...whatever the USA has made was already invented...hamburgers and hot dogs? German. Macaroni and cheese? Italian. Any American food is a poorer quality ripoff of another country's food, really...except candy and processed stuff.

There are some world class cheeses made in America, but they tend to be "artisan" small batch cheeses made by speciality cheesemakers. Factory made cheese is vile the world over.
Maytag blue cheese, for example.
Is actual real cheese as rare in America as the internet leads me to believe? Seems like proper cheese is prohibitively expensive over there.
@@Christian-rn1ur I found some great cheeses in farmers' markets and specialists stores in NYC, all made in the USA by small-scale, specialists cheesemakers. Many of them as good or better than French cheeses, which, on the whole, tend to be over-rated
Good cheeses from all over the world are available in America at...not cheap, but not unreasonable prices. My closest supermarket has a specialty cheese bar where you can get authentic Parmigiano Reggiano (rind markings are clearly visible) or any other global cheese you can imagine along with local cheeses produced in the area (I'm in a suburb of Denver, CO).
Spot on. There are world class cheeses made in America, just like there are world class beers. It's a huge country with loads of business. That being said, the mainstream brands seem to be the worst, cheapest, sugar-packed, over-processed products. And some of them try to mask it by slapping "Authentic" or "Italian" on the packaging, which adds insult to injury. It'd be great for Eva to taste some of the high-quality American products, that do not pretend to be "authentic" "Italian", but instead have their own, American identity and are not ashamed about it. I'm sure she'd like them
My in-laws came over from Italy when they were children and stayed in touch with family back in Italy. They used to get Italian care packages with cheese. Nothing compares to having an Italian mother in law she fed me till I was about to bust. I miss her greatly.
“I’m scared of you” 😂 poor Eva having to eat that cheese wiz!!!

This spray cheese thing is so so so weird! I've never been to the US and I don't have any parameters to judge this, but feels strange to me lol. I'm surprised this is the one Eva likes the most, plot twist INDEED, hahaha! You guys should do a video about pesto alla genovese! Is that common in the US? I'd love to see Eva's reactions to it. Love this channel so much!
It's kinda gross with only children and potheads that enjoy the canned cheese lol.
The easy cheese / spray cheese is usually a thing for a topper for snack crackers or broccoli and the like, though it's also popular in use on philly cheesesteaks and occasionally hot dogs and other street vendor foods. It's.... well, it's not real cheese, but it definitely fulfills the creamy sharp-cheese-flavored sauce role well, while having an almost gelatin-like consistency to it, making it useful as a condiment.
Compared to those other cheeses she tasted, the Easy Cheese does indeed have way more flavor. It has a lot of salt and oil added. Companies know we love some combination of salt, sugar, and fat.
@@SCComega traditionally easy cheese isn't in Philly cheese steaks, cheez whiz is

I've lived in Italy since 1983 and every time I go home my relatives ask for real Parmigiano DOP. I can tell you there is a difference especially the stagionato "aged". The older the cheese the sharper the taste.

I just discovered this channel, and I have been laughing out loud for the past three hours!! Thank you so much!!
You had me laughing out loud. Great job. Very entertaining.
I remember one of the Hell’s Kitchen episodes where Gordon came up with a set of fake gourmet meals made of cheap ingredients to see if the contestants would be able to taste them. And one of the meals was fake ‘fondue’ which was actually made of spray cheese. The contestants didn’t seem to find that something’s wrong and enjoyed the meals as if they were really gourmet and cooked with high-quality ingredients. So, maybe canned spray cheese is not that bad after all
That's true! I find it odd that there's this common idea that for food to be "good" it has to be all natural ingredients and cooked by highly experienced chefs. For me, the best foods is the ones that really makes you go "MMMHM" regardless what it is made out of, and an expensive dinner at a five star restaurant will certainly do that to me, but as well will a burger from a fast food joint, a pan pizza or a really cheap taco with spray cheese on top. Washing it down with Kool-Aid or Coke just makes it better, but I also enjoy trappist beers and fine wines. One does not benefit from being one sided.
@@hellion9547 I'm with you on the ability to eat whatever has flavors pleasant to me. Comfort food as prepared and sold in the US usually falls somewhere in there. But I don't find it odd that people may have a more 'discerning palate'. If you spend years eating food with no added sugars and you go to the US and try a burger, you'll be able to taste sugar in the bun, toppings and even in the meat. I mean as you land in the US, right at the airport your senses are flooded with the sugary beefy smell of fast food places
It's unfortunate that the people in the US are fed so much sugar that they don't even realize how much that is. And it's causing them addiction to make them crave more food, also causing them other health problems which they subsequently have to pay thousands of dollars for in order to get treatment which lines the pockets of medical and pharmaceutical industries.
She's right, if you see parmesan cheese that's soft, don't buy it, hard parmesano taste so much better even though its expensive.
My wife and I have been binge watching your channel since we subscribed yesterday! Very entertaining, educational and fun.
Thank you!!! ❤️

“That is plastic...” that response is awesome and well placed... haha...
Ok but literally anyone from Europe trying to buy cheese (or even meat), is surprised at how different and limited their selection is...
A grilled cheese or croque monsieur SHOULD NOT be made with cheddar, or grated cheese (no matter what kind).
It's literally been just over 3 months (right before the pandamic) when I was in the States and watched some American kind of cheese burn with my own eyes before it even melted... I'm with Eva on this one, I genuinely think their cheese and plastic are pretty much the same thing, lol!
Lived in Canada... and same conclusion: the cheese is plastic. If you want real cheese, you have to purchased imported products.
Don’t mistake the stuff called cheddar sold in the US with real cheddar.
Havne't tried it, but i guess Monterey Jack and it's derivates COULD be considered cheese?
@@DenverStarkey Stop being offended, I said what I said. Your cheese selection is worthless compared to what I'm used to, and I'm not sorry about it. If you can't even find it in a store like Walmart or Target...
A €1 pack of cheese here is still decent cheese.
Your country has other qualities but quality cheese is absolutely not one of them.
@@DenverStarkey My point is, if a regular, huge grocery store doesn't have it, you can't argue you have a good selection of cheese. Cheese being just one of the things. I'm glad I don't even (have to) know what "imitation cheese" is supposed to be.
The cheese I reffered to even said "easy melt" on the packaging...

"...Gesù Cristo..." e con questo Eva ha detto tutto, hahahahahaha
No! Not spray cheese! If I was on an island, stranded, NO WAY. 😝 But you're right about the pimento, especially on a burger. Specifically at Moe's Crosstown Tavern in Charleston!
Inside of the EU you probably couldn't even legally call that american "parmesan" Parmesan because both "Parmigiano-Reggiano" and "Parmesan" are protected designations of origin (PDO) for cheeses produced in these provinces under Italian and European law.
Outside the EU, the name "Parmesan" can legally be used for similar cheeses, with only the full Italian name unambiguously referring to PDO Parmigiano-Reggiano.
As to Harper's skepticism than cows in Parma are so different from American cows: I had a conversation with my Italian food expert friend -- a Belgian cellist and musicologist living in Bologna -- in which he told me that it is believed that there is indeed something about the grass on which cows graze in Parma that is different from that of other regions in Italy -- perhaps a question of the bacteria that grow on the grass. He cited Grana Padana as an example of an Italian cheese that was similar to Parmegiano- Reggiano, but "inferior." He also cited "Reggianito," a P-R analogue from Argentina, which he said was not quite PR, but still a good cheese.
What a twist! 🤣
I lmao when she said she liked the canned cheese the best !! While I do agree that there is no cheese on the planet better than a true Parmigiano-Reggiano, we do in America have many fine cheeses, especially in places like Wisconsin. You ought to do a re-do of this one with some proper US contenders. The canned cheese thing was hilarious though. Excellent content.
