I cannot pick a favorite, I can’t even pick a top 5. I love them all. My almost 8 yr old daughter while she loves it all too, she by far loves MHLN. She really loves when I sing ICU to her and I live to sing it to her. For Demi the song is to her sister I think Demi is 10+ yrs older than her.

for context: madison is her little sister! and the reason she called the song ICU relates directly to her overdose experience. when she woke up in the ICU, she was legally blind and couldn't even recognize her little sister's voice.

Melon Cake is about how controlling her old team was, especially with her eaiting. They only let her have a watermelon cake for her birthday, not a real cake.
15 minutes is about her ex-fiance. When they broke up, he went to Malibú and called paparazzi so they'd take photos of him praying and crying. It was WEIRD hahah.
Butterfly is about her dad. He was an addict, he left her and her mother when she was a child, and they had a distant and complicated relationship. He died in June, around Father's Day. She has written a few songs about her dad. I would recommend listening to them in order: For the Love of a Daughter, Shouldn't Come Back, Father and then Butterfly. Be prepared to cry.

@@Luscent Demi says her family doesn't even know the exact day of his death because he was found dead for more than a day. The assumption is he died in that situation because of his own struggles with addiction. And she says her biggest fear is to die alone, and it was hard thinking about her dad because that's exactly what happened to him at the end of his struggles with mental illness and substance
With Anyone, she recorded that version of the song 4 days before she overdosed. She was screaming into the void for help and still no one that was around her did anything, even after hearing her record it.

If you think DWTD the song was cinematic, watch the mv. She literally re-enacts the relapse, and the night of the OD down to the hair, makeup, and outfit she wore that night.

I do not know if she did that on purpose or if it was an accident. I imagine on purpose otherwise 15 minutes would have made more sense as 15 until you discover there’s 15 minutes left after 15 minutes is over then it makes sense

@@Luscent Yeah she had a really difficult relationship with him based on things that he’s done in the past, regarding alcoholism and abuse. Butterfly describes that place between forgiveness and resentment, and the sadness of realizing that he became finally what he needed to be for her when he passed.
Ariana actually wrote Met Him Last Night and gave it Demi it was supposed to a solo but Demi asked her to feature

I always cry listening to this album, like the raw emotions just are painful and heartbreaking, demi is INCREDIBLE
California Sober is a term she's using to describe drinking alcohol in moderation and smoking weed. So she's not fully sober. She believes this is the route for her. It's debatable and personally I'm very concerned with the way she's talked about it. But as a Lovatic, I'm really, really hoping she's right and she'll be okay.
Hmm yeah not sold on that personally because of the temptation to go overboard but hopefully it works for her! 💕

I’m sorry I’m laughing so hard rn 😭 Maddison is her little sister she got sober for the first time & that lasted 6 years, you should check out her documentary (dancing with the devil, it’s on CZcams), the lyrics will hit you so much harder once you have the full story 🤍

she said it in her documentary her dad died on june and they found his body days after his death so it always affected her cause he had alcohol and drug issues as well

"praying in Malibu": he asked her to marry him at a beach in Malibu. When they broke up he instantly went to that exact beach, called the paparazzi by himself and let them photograph him while he was crying at the beach 👀

Little background information about ICU (Madison's Lullaby): Madison is her little sister (she's 19, played Juanita Solis, Eva Longoria's daughter on Desperate Housewives, in case anyone remembers that :D). The song is about wanting to be there for her, be a better role model and hoping Madison is gonna know about her worth and that she can always count on Demi. But the song is much more literal than that. When Demi overdosed, she ended up in the ICU (hints the song title) and Madison was at her bedside, holding her hand and letting her know that she's there and that she loves her. Demi looked at her and physically could not see her little sister. She said "Who are you?" because she couldn't see Madison. She was temporarily blind. To this day, Demi has blind spots in her vision and she's not allowed to drive anymore, but regained most of her vision and is now able to see her sister again (ICU = "I See You").
Also, the first time Demi got sober back when she was 18, she did it because her parents said she wouldn't be allowed to see her little sister anymore if she kept on doing drugs and drinking. Fast forward a few years, Demi relapsed and was now LITERALLY not able to see her sister because of the drugs she was using. In the documentary Demi described it with "It's really ironic and in a weird way poetic that it ended up happening like that and me not actually seeing her [...] I think that God has a twisted sense of humor sometimes."
My suggestion is to watch her documentary series Dancing with the devil on CZcams its a 4 part episodes
If you cried listening to the audio of Dancing With the Devil, the videoclip and the documentary will have you sobbing. The videoclip recreates the night of her overdose and the documentary explores why she ended up there and what she did to get better

California Sober for her means mainly she smokes weed and drinks in moderation but is done with the hard drugs. 100% abstinence makes her eventually snap and go to bigger things. It’s basically harm mitigation.
