A theory about She is that 'she' is a feminine part of himself, or of 'the man' in the story, who cannot fit these feelings in his everyday life and has to play pretend around his family, his secretary, his mates, because he is afraid society would reject him if he showed 'her' to the world. That's why 'she sleeps in his bed' despite him 'not knowing who/where she is', because she's him.

i've always felt that its more a song that personifies a dream life. so whatever that desire is (ie running away and living in the woods orrr coming out or whatever) becomes so strong its personified in the subjects mind. harry writes with metaphors more often than not so the true meaning is hardly ever the most obvious one. just my opinion anyway!

I really loved his first album. But this actually elevated his style so much. And one of the most impressive things is that each song really is wildly different from the next. And even within one song he switches tempos and styles in a truly original way. I was honestly so blown away. It’s like the perfect album to listen to alone in the dark and completely lose yourself in.

  • @mary_v2023

So glad you found the album! 'Watermelon Sugar' isn't about eating watermelon ;) In 'Cherry' the person is Camille Rowe. That's her voice at the end. In "Fine Line" the words are "We'll be alright" (not alive). You should watch his music videos, they are just as amazing. If you watch the 'Adore You' video make sure it's the "Extended Version". Have you listened to his first album, 'Harry Styles'? If not you should.

I think you might be surprised by One Direction's 4th and 5th albums, Four and Made In The A.M. The boys were allowed much greater freedom to write their own songs with these albums, and the quality really shows in the music. Made In The A.M. is pretty musically experimental, and doesn't sound super pop-y.

All your perceptions of Harry's songs are correct because they're yours. Harry's intention is not to explain much about whay or whom the song is about, so it's open for interpretation. Except Sign of The Times which he specifically explained in some interview. I'd say he himself is open for interpretation so people assume lots of stuff about him but nobody can say for sure they're right. I like that about him, he's keeping it interesting for people and saves a little of personal space at the same time, something he didn't really have for first 5 years of his career. Anyone who firmly says anything about the meaning of a song, or about his personal life just fantasizes and it shouldn't be taken as gospel :)

I haven't seen a comment explaining the details you missed so I'm just gonna geek out here because I think this album is brilliant.
    1. The album(except tpwk) tells the story of a relationship from start to finish- as you guessed. It can be divided into 3 parts- the "Honeymoon phase", the breakup and finally acceptance.
    2. You can see him going through the different stages of grief- anger/jealousy(Cherry), depression(Falling), denial(To be so lonely) and acceptance(Fine Line).
    3. Sunflower Vol 6 is him reminiscing the good parts of their relationship. Like even though it ended, we can still look back at it fondly.
    4. I interpret Canyon Moon as him saying he's over his depression and breakup and he can finally be his happy old self again(I'm going home).
    5. What Fine Line means in Harry's words: the good parts of this relationship were the happiest he's ever been and the bad parts are the worst days of his life. So being in it was a fine line.
    6. There are a lot of callbacks between songs. He goes from "I'm falling again" to "Don't blame me for falling". From "Don't you call him baby" to " Don't call me baby". From "Just let me adore you" and "it sounds just like a song"(he's talking about sex here btw) to "want you more than a melody" and "spreading you open is the only way of knowing you". Basically it started as a casual relationship but he started craving a deeper connection.

Loved your reaction. The album is his emotional journey through the beginning & end of his relationship & what he learned about himself as a result. Harry has said he likes to use personification in his lyrics. I think he used that songwriting tool in She. Both the you & she in the verses are emotions. The woman/she in the bridge is the memory of his ex.

First of all: I love when you know a little already or pick it up as you go because hearing you sing along is so delightful! And once again I’m feeling my emotions validated all over again watching you be affected, too - Cherry and Falling can both make me cry on the right day.
As far as Harry: I listened to his first album a few times through and knew he was obviously talented, but it really just wasn’t for me style-wise. I was nervous about this album for that reason and then it absolutely blew me out of the water! So experimental and with tons of replay value and room to interpret meaning. Really took me from being a fan of him as a person to a huge fan of his music.

About 1D - yes, they were manufactured as a group and they participated in a talent show, this comes off really cheesy and people usually don't look past that, especially when they hear their 1 signle, which was a definition of bubblegum pop only designed for teen girls and people wrote them off instantly and forgot about them (as much as could in a world where 1D was the biggest bb for 5 years lol). But albums 3 to 5 were mainly written by the guys themselves, at least lyrics and melody. And as a person who doesn't listen to the radio and is quite a music snob, I must say I love them! I just found out about 1D as a band and as solo artists 3 months ago and I found their music very decent, plus they sound really good live, and many of their songs are made for huge arena live shows, you could hear it. I find it interesting at least)) They've been performing with the live band throught their whole career and I'd say there were 9 members of 1D, not 5)) Good times. Maybe you should check out some if their non-single stuff, especially from albums 3-5)

I watched that talent show! It was on the X Factor and yeah the while thing felt a bit contrived looking back (I stopped watching the year after) but I'll have to listen to some of their later stuff if they got a bit more involved writing! Especially considering how good Harry is on his own!

If you were impressed with Zayn, and you're obviously impressed with Harry's solo work, you should check out Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson as well. Liam Payne also has his solo stuff but i'm not sure you'll be that impressed with it but in any case, I had to mention they all have quite successful careers :)
This is only proving how 1D wasn't your usual boyband. Usually when the boyband inevitably splits up, there are only 1 max 2 people who have successful careers afterwards. Maybe it's because they all contributed to their music when it was a band but we had like 1/5 of their potential and now we have it in full force and for me 1D legacy is amazing.
Especially you as a songwriter should dig Louis work, the lyrics he comes up with are just piercing. Harry's too but they kinda build a visuals of the emotion, Louis's just make you scratch your head and think about it for days. Niall's music is very relatable and somehow vulnerable, there's more like conversation with a friend than the fascinating art, which is Harry's music for me personally.
They're all very different musically but very simialr in their high quality.
Zayn's stuff is not for me but I respect what he does a lot. Liam has amazing voice but I'm not happy with his solo career. Frankly, he does something that people would think their boyband must have done if they don't know what 1D was like. Very manufactured and very mainstream. At the same time his range and tembre sound best when he sings some classics like christmas songs and I'd love to see him occupy that Buble-esque crossover genre, I think he'd rule that niche.

about the songs: (sorry this is long😭)
watermelon sugar - it's actually about oral sex, the music video also helps with finding that out 😂
Lights Up - it's very freeing and accepting who you are and finding yourself (the music video also gives off the freeing feeling and "stepping into the light")
Cherry - is about his ex girlfriend camille rowe (she's a french model he was with!) that's her talking at the end of the song. Also, it's named "Cherry" because "chéri" is "darling" in French!!
Falling - when he mentions the drink & his wondering hands that connects to "to be so lonely" when he says "don't blame the drunk caller" and in "to be so lonely" it goes back to falling with the 1st line "don't blame me for falling"
She - there's many theories for this song, some say it's about him picturing himself with a normal life and that perfect someone "she" he hasn't met yet or that it's about his feminine side
Sunflower vol. 6 - i think it's about reminiscing memories (the good ones) from his past relationship!
TPWK - Treat People With Kindness is his motto & he's said he's always wanted to make it into a song (he's always had tpwk merch too)
Fine Line - the song is both sad yet healing, especially when the orchestra of instruments come out and he's singing "we'll be alright" after all that's happened it's such a beautiful song.
i hope this helped understanding most of the songs better better!!

In my opinion, golden and sunflower have very deep meaning, I've seen a lot of videos explaining them and the meaning is amazing. Like in the beginning he says sunflower backwards(if you didnt notice),and you can hear him singing sunflower through you're headphones(it goes back and forth, and basically he's the sunflower) and the reason why it goes back and forth is that when sunflowers grown, the sunflowers follow the sun (if that makes sense) basically saying he is the sunflower and the sun is the person hes inlove with and saying that wherever he or she goes. he'll go with them. (it's about of the beginning of relationship)
Golden if you pay attention to the lyrics one of the lines are-Take me back to the light
I know you were way too bright for me
    I'm hopeless, broken
So you wait for me in the sky
Browns my skin just right- Saying that he is earth and the person he loves is the sun and he says - I knew you were to bright for me, and browns my skin just right- also saying that if the sun gets to close to him (earth) he would burn and when he says browns my skin just right it means like the sun is perfect where it is because, as I said, if the sun was too close the would basically ruin eachother. He also says "wait for me in the sky" I think that means just wait for me and never give up about us being soulmates,I guess.(Btw I'm not 100% sure these are the meanings so please don't hate.)

Ok so about She... one of the reasons I adore this song is that the song might actually be about a trans woman who hasn’t quite come to terms with who she is. This is why he alternates between he and she. Every time he uses “he” he’s talking about routine, boring, everyday activities, and when he uses “she”, it goes into the daydreaming and fantasy, the person she really wants to become.

trans woman is a bit of a stretch imo. I think the popular theories floating around is that it's about harry grappling with his gender identity/possible gender dysmorphia (i say "his/harry's" because the entire chorus is sung in first person vs the verses being sung in third person/out of body). Feels weird to just give it an actual label when the song itself is purposefully fluid and vague in meaning and feeling/instrumentation but it does seems to be playing around within that ball area so I get why you made that leap but ehhh at most you can take away that harry has or is grappling about how he presents himself in the world/how he may see himself & coming to terms with it (maybe...? there isn't really a resolution, it sounds very ongoing/unresolved in the last verse you cited imo).

    • @andresbecerra1183
      @andresbecerra1183 Před 3 lety

@@whiistlingwinds i know it sounds unresolved. That’s the point. I said about a trans woman coming to terms with, not a trans woman after having come out. If it were resolved, using the he pronoun may actually be viewed even as offensive. Btw i never said that this is about harry being trans, i would never assume that about anyone if they haven’t explicitly said it, i saw it as a story of someone else, not Harry.
That said, i also love the interpretation that it’s about harry himself grappling with gender expression. That also makes sense and makes it a bit more personal to HS. But it any case, both interpretations are along the same line, and I really loved how he views this woman as the fantasy and the representation of being free, and the man as the routine and repressed person.
