Likely has to put up with a fair bit of hassle too. And tips? Forget about it. I suppose the good thing is that his only overheads would be a new paddle now and then, and the occasional boat repair, and probably a new cloak every few years. I tell ya, it wouldn't be me.

Charon has been promised by the God of the Underworld that he can be freed from his role as ferryman once he fills a boot with coins. Every night Charon deposits his coins in the boot. However, the dark God has tricked him by putting a hole in the bottom of the boot so his coins slowly slip out into the abyss so that Charon will never fill the boot and will never be free.
This may or may not be where the tradition of laying coins in the graves of the deceased came from. But the tradition existed independently of Hellenistic influence too.

As a small kid then, I was terrified of the monsters and Medusa, Kraken and the Ferryman. These certainly gave me the chills.
My brother use to hide under the blanket everytime Calibos use to show up on the screen.

The fact Charon is all practical effects is what makes it timeless. His silence is also part of what makes him so scary.
Genuinely I find it more atmospheric and frightening that most CGI equivalents. I don't hate well done CGI but this just gets under my skin more.
I'll take practical effects over CGI any day. Most modern blockbuster movies look like video games to me.
