      When I was about 12 years old there was a guy in school who got picked on by another for no apparent reason. He would tell teachers and the principal but they would say, "there has to be a reason. What did you do to him?" And they just let it continue, day after day, believing that he was antagonizing him. He finally got fed up and went to teachers and the principal as well as every classmate he could find and said, "Well there is a reason he picks fights with me everyday. It's because I walked in on him giving another student a blowjob in the bathroom. Suddenly they cared. They didn't care about him getting picked on and assaulted, but for some reason they came alive when they thought he was sucking down cock. The bully eventually checked out of school and had to repeat the grade.

    I think Medusa does look pretty cool in the remake (despite my love for Harryhausen's stop-motion), but the overall scene in the original is better. The dark, flickering lights and Perseus having to listen for Medusa make it really tense and suspenseful. The remake is well-lit and fast-paced/action-oriented. Not bad, but the atmosphere in the '81 version is better.

    • @MrDibara
      @MrDibara Před 4 měsíci +3

      Agreed. It's a shame, because CGI *can* be used to make some beautiful thrilling scenes!
      But instead, most directors opt for flashy and fast-paced and action. No one really tries to create the same _atmosphere_ of suspense and fear and dread that Ray Harryhausen created in some of his best scenes.
      Medusa is a near unbeatable monster. Simply looking at her can cause your death. That's terrifying! How can the hero even begin to fight something like that?!
      The Remake discards that fear almost completely. The fast paced action relaxes our brain into "they'll figure something out" automatically.
      *Execution.* The Remake's issue when compared to the original was "execution", that very key word. At least, in regards to Medusa's moment.

    The special effects of today may be bigger and brighter, but it doesn't matter how dazzling they are, you still need a talented filmmaker to make them work in the context of a film. The more recent Clash of the Titans may be glossy and slick, but I couldn't detect a single moment of tension in the entire film. The original had it's flaws, the Medusa scene goes to illustrate that you don't need hundreds of millions of dollars to create a good movie- just a good imagination

      @@Bunnybunny5656 It really depends on the source whether Medusa is ugly or beautiful. The older the source, the uglier Medusa is. It was largely due to poets like Ovid and later artists' depictions that we think of Medusa today as beautiful or "sexy."
      You just didn't like it because your generation doesn't even understand what film craftsmanship is. Your movies have no dialog (costs too much to translate into other languages), no aesthetics, no beauty, no meaning; they're just crass, meaningless, plotless hours-long action sequences crowded with bad CGI effects.

      There's actually one really late version of the Medusa myths from the time of the Roman Empire that implied that Minerva didn't mess with Medusa's face. Minerva was such an asshat, she left Medusa's beautiful face intact since it was her beauty that got her raped by Neptune in the first place.
      Also, kind of messed up for the victim. You hear all these stories about how Medusa's repulsiveness killed people only to find in your dying moments that she really is beautiful. But no one will ever know about that because no one lives to tell the tale.

      @Matt-rm5ir Před 8 lety +4

      Yes the original one did feel more menacing, and more suspenseful. And maybe that is because they didn't have the capability of CGI, but that was not a bad thing. The Medusa from the original looked frightening and did seem intimidating once you looked it in the eyes. The new one looks...adorable lol and not that scary when you see her snake like face. I think they did the best with the material in the original, a scene like this needed to be suspenseful, not action packed with slow motion jumps and screaming, as well as intense music. I think they were too busy making it look pretty in the remake rather than making it work well.

      Hands down the original is the best. What I thought was cool about the remake Medusa is that they merged conflicting details of the myth. One myth says she was ugly, had green skin, and bulging eyes. Another says she retained her original beauty (besides the snake hair and body) and why it was so difficult/mesmerizing not to look at her.
      The remake kind of married both descriptions of her to allow both descriptions. She was beautiful until she locked into you and turned into a serpent monster face.
      Creatures were definitely scarier before the days of CGI, of course.

    No comparison here IMO. The original is my favourite film of all time.. seen it hundreds of times and the Medusa sequence still gets the adrenaline pumping because of the anticipation it brings. I was so upset at the remake - the CGI spoiled it for me, not a patch on Harryhausen’s genius stop motion. Medusa is supposed to be a terrifying Gorgon, which is shown in the original, and that upped the scare factor even more. I know it’s mythology, but the remake is just too unbelievable and fake. At least with the original, the way it was made, the film locations, the costumes and casting made it look and feel so much more realistic and authentic. Exactly the same situation with the Kraken.. I laughed in the cinema as I just thought it looked ridiculous! And the fact Bubo was in it for less than 2 seconds made me soooooo mad 😂

      Blame Sam Worthington for that; he thought the mechanical owl was stupid and out of date, and refused to do any scenes with the owl; even threatening to quit if they didn’t cut out the scenes with Bubo.
      While I agree the old Bubo DID look a bit dated, with some minor updates and improvements to his body he would have KILLED it as an enchanted construct, as he did in the original film, while still retaining enough of his trademark look to be recognizable. Sam only needed to give the concept a chance, and it would have worked perfectly.
      Heck, Bubo was just as iconic as Medusa in this movie; when this film is mentioned, the first things people think of are Medusa and Bubo!
      But Sam remained stubborn, and thus the remake lost one of its most memorable characters, along with Pegasus.
      I also agree that the remake’s scene lacked the suspense, tension, and terror of the original. The original may seem dated by today’s standards, but the cinematic elements of that scene more than make up for it. That’s the problem with movies nowadays; they rely too much on fancy CGI, while having weak plots and hardly any substance or thematic elements to them.

A dark and eerie scene with chilling sound effects and cryptic music, or another fast-paced fight scene that has so much nonstop action that there isn't enough time to get any real sense of a build-up? Plus she still crawls about like classic Medusa, which to be honest was one of the more frightening aspects of the original. She’s introduced by crawling around as though she has no legs, yet stands vertically upon the body and tail of a serpent.

His idea, in my opinion, really captured the horror of her curse. The contempt in her expression in the original movie as she stalked the intruders was electric. You were actually worried about Perseus and his men. The new movie, while mildly entertaining, had an assembly line, forced feel to it. I was just waiting for each scene to end (which really disappointed me).

      vanishy0urself Good analysis but don't you think CGI is overused? I mean I can tell the new Medusa is CGI. Feels like I'm watching a cartoon. Obviously the original Medusa looks fake but my point is that in 34 years we went from a fake looking Medusa to a fake looking Medusa. When CGI is used across the board in a movie it doesn't provide verisimilitude at least for me anyway.

    • @vanishy0urself
      @vanishy0urself Před 9 lety +7

      mpags I find complaints about fake-looking CGI a bit of a misblame, actually. The CGI itself has evolved to such a point that you can intercut reality and CG without most people noticing. Consider the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its squirrel scene. Some squirrel shots were real, some were CGI. Can you honestly tell without looking it up which is which? I can't. Maybe it's more apparent on the big screen, I usually watch movies on my computer, so maybe the screen size makes it harder to spot, but still...
      The whole "feels like I'm watching a cartoon" thing can arise even in movies that _don't have_ CGI due to a far more invasive and intrusive process: digital color grading. Every movie that's coming out now has color grading, but some films go for this extreme, hyper-graded look. Bay-orange and Matrix-green are two really good examples of that. And yes, some movies do it wrong.
      Granted, sometimes CGI can look _really_ awkward, but any special effect can look awkward. CGI is just a tool, like miniatures. Saying "CGI is overused" is akin to saying "miniatures are overused".
      In the case of this medusa, she does look a bit fake, but in a way that kind of suits her. The most CGI-like thing is that there's no physical weight to her movements, but that fits the idea of an unnatural mythical monster... although in terms of unnatural movement, no one will ever outshine Ringu's Sadako. Ever.

      It'd be a really sad one if they sticked to the original story, but chances are they would just change bits here bits there and make a whole new happy ending.

      @gast128 Před 8 lety +5

      +DJ Kingzy Not sure if that's a good idea. The original story of Medusa was that she was once a beautiful woman but got badly treated by the Gods. She ended up as hideous creature with the sole task to convert visiting humans to concrete statues. We all know about her end. This is ofc a very intriguing and morally twisted story, but no doubt that Hollywood will flatten it and make a one dimensional happy story about it.

      would rather see a real movie. based on her not just an animated one. I think they could get her story in but pit a little extra in. persus in some way was her saviour to me saved her from a curse.to live her days out alone ugly forgotten and cursed with no one to really interact with.isolated this poor woman.

    With all the CGI, with all it's "action packed" choreography, with all the music, the new one doesn't hold a candle to the old one. The old music, the old medusa, the old look was MUCH, much creepier and sinister. Sometimes you have to know when less is more, and this proves that very point. Medusa is a thousand times scarier, the whole scene provokes more anticipation and anxiety in you. The old one is far superior in every way. Hands down.

    • @1Buttonmasher
      @1Buttonmasher Před 6 lety +4

      Yeah but the whole point of the new one was that it humanised Medusa more and made her a much more relatable and tragic figure rather than just a scary monster. But both are close to different versions of the old myth. Also I liked the bit of tension and fear before the fight began in the new one, that was quite well done.

    The craftsmanship of the stop motion medusa is amazing and scared the bejeezus out of me when I was little. Ray Harryhausen conceived of her and built her in his own workshop. The fact he had to use dolls eyes adjusted each frame with the end of a pencil eraser... Dolls eyes? Shudder... Creep factor ten and cinema magic.

    In the remake, I found myself focusing on Medusa's Maidenform Bra and not on the action, which had too many high-speed chase scenes. In Harryhausen's version, Perseus's fear is very palpable as the sweat pours down his face while she comes nearer and nearer. The head comes off, and Perseus collapses like, "Thank the gods it was her and not me!" The grand finale is when the ketchup gushes out, and his shield is dissolved in it--absolutely OVER THE TOP! The students I was teaching when the remake came out said they preferred the computer graphics. Oh, and they liked "Toy Story" as well.

  • @razorroer4932
    @razorroer4932 Před 6 lety +5

    The old one is more dramatic. However, I agree with the newer version because Medusa was initially the prettiest lady in her city and she was a priestess in Athena's temple. She was raped by the rapist Poseidon because he was angry with Athena being chosen as a patroness of the city by its citizens instead of him. Athena bribed the people with olives and Poseidon tried with horses. Unfortunately for Medusa and her sisters Stheno and Euryale, instead of dueling with Poseidon, she actually punished Medusa, the rape victim who kept her virginity and chastity and dedicated her life as a priestess, who was obviously a mortal incapable of fighting a Poseidon; into the gorgon that she was along with her innocent sisters. Her sisters were made immortal whilst Medusa remained mortal. That's why she could be killed. I think it's fair that the newer version shows her prettier face as she was a pretty innocent lady who became a victim to the pagan deities' rivalries - twice. One time it turned her and her innocent sisters into monsters - they didn't deserve such treatment. Second time, it rendered her dead because some pagan gods and warriors wanted to use her head without getting into casualty although without her consent and resignation.
