These materials are important when we talk about making superconductors, transistors etc. Not all subjects in pure math are "useful" as you have defined it. But when complex numbers and imaginary numbers were first discovered, no one thought it would be important; because they weren't "useful" in the real world. Nowadays, complex numbers are used in computer algorithms, electronics, quantum mechanics etc.

I keep seeing this "arbitrary rules" comment. These rules aren't arbitrary, this video discusses the field of Topology which relates to the infinite deformation of a surface while not tearing, pinching, or gluing the surface. These rules relate back to calculus, where if a curve was not smooth, or not continuous at all, then it was not differentiate-able at that point. Instead of a curve, these are now surfaces, and the pinching/tearing relates to the curvature of the surface being continuous and differentiate-able. This is where the rules come from. Look up Topology sometime, it is very interesting.

I keep seeing this "arbitrary rules" comment. These rules aren't arbitrary, this video discusses the field of Topology which relates to the infinite deformation of a surface while not tearing, pinching, or gluing the surface. These rules relate back to calculus, where if a curve was not smooth, or not continuous at all, then it was not differentiate-able at that point. Instead of a curve, these are now surfaces, and the pinching/tearing relates to the curvature of the surface being continuous and differentiate-able. This is where the rules come from. Look up Topology sometime, it is very interesting.
