    The year was 2009. I was chatting on Messenger (Windows', not Facebook's) with my crush for the first time since I finally got an internet connection in my home. I could text her without spending on SMS! Cool.
    So we were just chatting about anime or something along the lines, and before she went offline to sleep she sends me this out of nowhere. This was the first "viral video" I was sent. "This is pretty cool, good night" she says.
    We never got together because she wasn't interested. A couple of weeks ago I saw her at the entrace of a local concert and we played dumb like we didn't know each other after our eyes met. Didn't see her for the rest of the night.
    Every now and then when CZcams recommends me this I watch it for a couple of minutes to remember how weird those times were. I wonder if she does the same. I doubt it, honestly.
    Thank you.

    Does anybody know an actual reason why this information would ever be useful? Clearly we're never able to push two physical objects into one another without defying laws of matter and gravity so this is only going to be possible in a computer simulation. The fact that this actually exists with such professional backgrounding without any actual reason for it to exist is actually bugging me for whatever reason.

    • @gtom123
      @gtom123 Před 7 lety +37

      The video is talking about topology, or differential topology to be more exact. And while its applications are not "useful" in our everyday lives, it is cosntantly applied in biology, physics, and computer science.
      This year's Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to topology in condensed matter. This is the application of the mathematical objects in the video (holes, twists, turning number, defects and all) to real life materials. These materials are important when we talk about making superconductors, transistors etc.
      Not all subjects in pure math are "useful" as you have defined it. But when complex numbers and imaginary numbers were first discovered, no one thought it would be important; because they weren't "useful" in the real world. Nowadays, complex numbers are used in computer algorithms, electronics, quantum mechanics etc.

      Jason Jahn The video should be title "How to solve a useless math equation".
      They asked the question "How do we turn a sphere inside out?" Then they realized no amount of math makes that possible in real life. So they made an imaginary material so it is possible, but then it became too easy. So they decided to add a limitation that doesn't fit said material to make it more difficult.
      Don't you see how stupid this is?

    I keep seeing this "arbitrary rules" comment. These rules aren't arbitrary, this video discusses the field of Topology which relates to the infinite deformation of a surface while not tearing, pinching, or gluing the surface. These rules relate back to calculus, where if a curve was not smooth, or not continuous at all, then it was not differentiate-able at that point. Instead of a curve, these are now surfaces, and the pinching/tearing relates to the curvature of the surface being continuous and differentiate-able. This is where the rules come from. Look up Topology sometime, it is very interesting.
