Originally, there was a horror movie titled “Willard” in 1971. Lonely boy makes friends with rats. At the end, he is killed by the rats, led by the rat named Ben. This song is from the sequel in 1972 titles “Ben”, when a new boy moves into the house. I loved Michael’s song about friendship, and his voice was extraordinary, but he’s singing about a rat!
I've always thought of how lonely and miserable he was when he was a kid. So much that the only friend he had was a mouse. That immediately made me think of his grown ups who were only worried about how much money he could make for the family with his exquisite voice. 😞
The prettiest song ever about a pet rat! :-) "Ben" was nominated for an Academy Award in 1973 and won the Golden Globe award for best movie song that year.
A God given talent. Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, no one comes close to these two. Icons to another level. May MJ finally have the peace, he never seem to have here on earth.
The song Ben, was written for the movie "Ben" who was indeed a rat/rodent. I know it sounds strange, but I remember going to the movie theatre to see this particular movie, while in grade school. FYI, I will be 59 years young this year. African American Queen/👑 fan.
This brings back memories, Ben was the first song I learned to sing ( I think, this or song sung blue by Neil Diamond). I think I was 5. Thanks for the memories
Yup. In the movie "Ben" a lonely abused little boy befriends a hyper-intelligent escaped lab rat named Ben, who brings all his rat friends along. The little boy writes the song and sings it. Cringe. The only redeeming thing about the entire movie is MJ singing the title song over the closing credits.
Hey ✌️😉 I was young when Ben came out, Ben was his pet rat yes. The movie was really about intollerance. Everybody looks at a rat and screams and hates them, calles them dirty, stomps on them and worse. They are actually very good, sweet intelligent pets, the pretty ones we got from the pet store and raised, they were so funny and sweet, as smart as a dog as well, they come when you call their name and follow you around just wanting your attention and always want to be with you. They are clean and only defficate in one little space in their cages, not all over. Very trainable and fun like a hamster, but smarter, not just nocturnal and mine was white with black spots, just beautiful. But nobody wants to think of a rat as loveable or intelligent, see? That's what the song is about. Love the channel, a big fan, E. 👍
Aw man I still remember this movie! It was the sequel to Willard, a horror story about a boy taking a rat as a pet and friend. Ben was his replacement. Michael's voice was truly powerful & pleasing at such a young age! Extraordinary! He killed it. One of a kind ✌🏼
This song was MJs first solo number one song. Was suppose to be a song for Donny Osmond but he was busy so they gave it to MJ and the rest his history! This song one a Golden Globe. Was also nominated for an Oscar but lost. MJ performs it at the Oscars too.

I was around 16 when the movie 'Willard' was released. The only line I remember is "Tear him up!".......when the crazy young guy in the starring role, sics his army of rats on his boss ( played by Ernest Borgnine...I think...). Ben was his favorite rat or something.....the 'leader' of the pack. Can't recall the actor who played Willard, but I remember he was in a couple of other films. I'll have to look up a movie review. I'm guessing it must have been pretty stupid.......but for some reason, I paid to see it.
I wonder how much the work he had done on his nose changed the sound of his voice? His singing was always amazing, but I wonder what he would've sounded like as an adult if he hadn't ever had any work done. Not that his tone would've been better or worse, just different.
@Holly Odell he had first nose job at least 7/8 years after this & his Voice have changed much before that nose job. The thing is it's his Because of his unique voice his song appeal is such Global than Anybody in History . It resonates with every race, Religion , culture or sexual orientation . I'm From INDIA 🇮🇳 and he is most popular & Influential Artist here even though English is not our Native Language.
I think some people's voice change a little as they get older. For example, people who sing with either the falsetto or high voice. It becomes more difficult to attain.
Ben was the only friend he had. A rat. Ben ended up in a rat trap and he was heart broken. Also this song is from a movie soundtrack about the story . His mom never realized how Hurt he was.
Watching this makes me stop & think what a blessing it is to witness an artist dominate from such a young age into adulthood. He was *always* a star. I can’t even grasp what living this life was like. I’d love for you to react to That’s What You Get For Being Polite by the Jacksons 🙏🏾czcams.com/video/6mhnJ3xng2k/video.html
The Jackson 5 I enjoyed a lot. Michael Jackson ot so much, I guess maybe the whole child thing is just to much to overcome. I still prefer the younger sound.
I'm binge-watching you and thinking of things as I go from one video to the other. You love songs with stories. Listen to the true story song "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. The picture in this video is a colorized version of a photo of Dolly as a child wearing the coat. czcams.com/video/LQjMCKq87N0/video.html

His voice just warms my heart when he was younger I totally agree 😊

A song about a rat! Only MJ could make that sound beautiful. You're right about his voice.
It was a good movie. Cry 😥😥😥😥😥😥

This is on an album of his I bought in the early 70's. I think It is about his friendship with a rat!
Yep, there was a bad 70s movie, which is why I could never really like this song~ lol!

I agree.. The very early songs MJ sang were wonderful, can't put my finger on why but there seemed to be a pure vulnerable honesty in his voice...

Sheesh, I saw "Willard" at the drive in with my parents when it came out. We never got around to seeing "Ben", but I saw it later. Strange but sad

Watch the movie "Willard" and you'll understand who Ben is.
